Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0)

Hi, @Nail1684 I think @southerndoc meant exactly what he wrote…
Yes, you can filter the list (which requires far more clicks than the old folder view to achieve the same thing (I start to see a pattern here)), but the question is - why this list, in its current form, was added at all?
If you have a few entries on it, then ok, I assume you can just scroll through it and find the entry that you are interested in and open the site from there.
But from the perspective of users like @southerndoc (450+ items), or myself (600+ items), the only logical thing is to now collapse All items and never interact with that list again. I think nobody would realistically expect us to scroll through hundreds of items to do… basically anything at all with them?
Unless, of course, “All items” would be shown as a folder structure that some users meticulously created to organize this amount of password entries.
I don’t understand why this wasn’t part of the initial redesign to have options for users with a few entries (flat list), users with hundreds of entries (folders), or users who don’t care about this list (collapse). :person_shrugging:

Maybe to the point of the “All items” list. But my quote from @southerndoc - and thereby my response - was about his point of “either all items or no items at all” would be viewable.

The “All items” list itself is another point - and here I agree, that it is not the optimum. I personally would prefer to make it customizable so that a “structured view” (with folders) would also be possible.

The same “All items” list is also there in the web vault and desktop app.

I agree!

I’d like to challenge the above assertion — the number of clicks required to drill down to a folder’s contents has not changed, except for some edge cases (e.g., if you have folders that contain a mix of vault items and subfolders, or if you routinely used a pop-out window or sidebar to display the “Vault” view in the old UI).

For most cases, accessing a folder’s contents required/requires the following steps:

Click Old UI New UI
1 Open Extension Open Extension
2 Click “Vault” tab Click “Folder” filter
3 Click desired folder Click desired folder
4 Click desired item (or its quick copy icons) Click desired item (or its quick copy icons)
5 Click “Back” to return to folder list Click “Folder” filter to return to folder list
6 Start over at Step 3 Start over at Step 3

I realize the filters are there. I don’t like it. I liked the old design where you could click vault and it would show categories.

I can’t argue about personal taste. :+1:

(emphasis my edit)

That part here made it sound like it wouldn’t now be possible at all to organize the view of your items - and that is simply not true, because the possibility is there with the filters. (I got it, that you don’t like them - but they are there nonetheless)

And I agree with @grb 's last post (actually forgot to write it myself - of course not as detailed…) - and would describe it in short like this: with the old extension, we had to change (click!) to the Vault tab and scroll down to see and use the folders. As disliked as the new filters may be: the folders filter in the new UI is directly within reach - no need to change tabs and scroll down after that.

I don’t like the filter tab/option on top. I want my suggested items listed without the filter option being on top of them. I then want my favorites listed. If I click vault, then it gives me a list of folders to choose from.

The idea of needing the filters at the top – when the previous/older version worked better – is annoying.

It does not seem like user experience was not extensively researched prior to this “update” (regression). Like I said, I like the GUI redesign, but think the new filters tab and listing all items is a significant regression from prior experience.

Now that we have gotten past the hidden copy buttons, the small fill button and collapsing all-items, it seems the next “hot button” item is folders. With this in mind, I create a feature request so that we can all express our interest in it. If you want a folder view back, please go vote for it.

Although it may surprise some here, I have actually voted for this as I feel it will make the product more useable by a larger audience.

I’m not trying to defend the design decisions, just explain the apparent thought process. The “Vault” page has been redesigned to use filtering/searching as a paradigm for finding relevant vault content. When a filter is applied, or a search term entered, the “All Items” section only displays items that match the search/filter criteria. The fewer criteria are specified, the more items are shown in the search results; thus, it seems that for logical consistency, the “All Items” list should indeed contain all vault items when no filters or search terms have been specified.

As of version 2025.1.1, the “All Items” section can be collapsed, and it will then expand automatically whenever a search term or filter has been specified. This is how it should have been implemented from the beginning.

The naming of the “All Items” section is also misleading. It should probably be “Search Results” or “Other Search Results” (since search results do also appear under “Autofill Suggestions” and “Favorites”).

I’ve previously enumerated a number of differences between the old and new UIs for folders. Although objecting against some (or all) of those changes is reasonable, giving a :-1: reaction to the fact that the number of clicks did not change seems, well, a bit petulant

Slight correction, the old UI opened to the ‘Tab’ view where the Folders were listed, so you didn’t have to click on ‘Vault’ first to select a folder and then drill down to its contents, you went straight to the desired folder. The new UI added a step to the whole process, an argument many have made here.

@RandomDude No, @grb 's description was right. The folders were in the “Vault” tab in the old UI:

The old “Tab” tab only contained:

  1. Login items as “auto-fill suggestions”
  2. Cards
  3. Identities

No, it really didn’t, as shown in the screenshots above. In versions prior to 2024.12.0, you could not see the folders unless you first clicked the “Vault” icon in the bottom navigation menu, or clicked the pop-out icon in the top left corner. In addition, in most cases, you had to first scroll past the “Favorites” and “Types” sections on the Vault page before you even get to the “Folders” section.

If you don’t believe me, you can reinstall the old version (2024.11.4) and check for yourself.

My apologies, did install the old version to remind myself and sometimes when logging in it would default to the ‘Tab’, and sometimes it would default to the ‘Vault’ with my folders, hence needing one less click. For me, most of the times it would default to ‘Vault’, hence why I said an additional step was needed for the new UI.

This seems like a bug in your system, unless you are talking about a situation in which you are using the pop-out option or a browser sidebar (e.g., in Firefox). In fact, there is an old feature request that asks for the ability to change the default view so that is is not always showing the “Tab” page when the browser extension is opened:

created this account just to let you know that the new UI is very bad. it is very slow and complex to use, the password generator copy/regenerate icon seems to be on wrong location, i keep clicking on rotate icon instead of copy. these/one option page/screen when open stuck as it is even after closing it on other webpages/tabs .

i tried using this but can’t handle it anymore.

Thanks for the feedback, all, just a reminder that you can customize your experience using the following settings.

  • Autofill behavior: Settings > Autofill > Click items to autofill on Vault view
  • Copy action: Settings > Appearance > Show quick copy actions on Vault
  • Compact mode: Settings > Appearance > Compact Mode (can also adjust the width here)

@cxlobo do you have any specific suggestions for the theming that you would like passed along to the team?

@raj Can you share more on the issue with the password generator icon?

Aren’t the first 2 addressed at least partially by compact mode? Also, the general number of icons should have been reduced in the new design, not increased. What are you referring to, specifically?

I don’t care about the design so much, given the choice I’d prefer the old one - but I can live with the new one.

But the reliability, what the hell happened!?

Been a paying user for many many years now, but seriously considering switching to something else.

All apps incl. the browser extension are so buggy it’s almost amazing.

  • Biotmetrics stops working all of a sudden and I have to disable/enable it to get it working again.
  • Once logged in I just get an infinite spinner, have to close and reopen to get it to load.
  • Autofill stopped working entirely.

I have all the latest versions and I’m on a Macbook Pro M3 for crying out loud!

Someone needs to get fired.

… do you use Chrome as your browser? - Because what you describe, sounds like a known problem with Chrome, that affects mostly Mac users… see here (there are also possible solutions): Chrome extension takes forever to load UI after authenticating and is extremely slow and unresponsive

I get the old UI wasn’t shiny, but it was very functional. The new UI makes everything a little more difficul and take a bit more time.

The tiny fill button is just irritating, and removing the categories from the “home” screen removed one of my favorite features about Bitwarden.

Ultimately, this change convinced me to try out ProtonPass since I already pay for ProtonMail, and I’m likely going to stay. While it doesn’t have some of the features the BW has, it has what I use most often and, at least for me, a subjectively better user experience that’s more responsive in Brave on Apple.

I disabled auto-renewal on my subscription, but for $10/yr, it’s probably worth it to keep around as a backup.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check out ProtonPass.

I’ve given it time to adjust to it. I’ve tried the new “settings”. I’ve given feedback on this forum. I’ve given feedback to support (who gaslights me). I’m done with this product
