I feel very unsettled by how cramped this UI is.
It’s the worst redesign I’ve seen recently. Hopefully you listen to the crowd.
I wanted to say i find all your suggestions nice, especially the one for New
/Edit
button.
Looking at the icons, i think 1 and 2 don’t function as hints for “fill credentials”.
- makes me thing of the console/terminal or the cell tower signal
- makes me think of the edit button
On the other hand 3. might imply fill, but it also looks like the “click target to open an url”
First Impressions were ‘neat’ then immediately NO NO NO NO!!!
If I open the extension I would click no the autofill, now I find my self doing this and opening the item instead of filling!! Have to hit the tiny button instead.
Biggest complaint is my notes! Now I have to search or filter instead!
Has anyone found a real way to revert back!!
I know this post is meant for the web browser extension but Im just noticing this so I think it was implemented in iOS 2024.12.0 but could be wrong.
Why does the iOS app have 2 buttons to create new items. This is redundant.
For consistency between the mobile apps, desktop apps and web browser extension, the new button on the bottom should be removed or remove the top add button and add the bottom add button to the desktop apps and web browser extensions.
I do like how the bottom new button l looks however I feel like it should be a floating button where you could drag it around the screen but I don’t think that is possible. I say this because it kind of reminds me of chat bots on websites.
I think some people will complain about the bottom add button because it takes up real estate space to see your vault items.
Hate to be that guy, making a new account just to complain. But this new UX awful. I wanted to give some constructive feedback, but the only thing I could think to say is revert to the previous version.
The padding / scrolling / modal on top of modal is horrific.
I used the website a 1440p and its awful. Used it on a 900p macbook air, and its completely unusable. I’m sorry, I appreciate this is negatives, but it needs deleted.
Yes! After a few days of fighting with the browser extension on all my computers and seeing the Bitwarden team’s unwillingness to roll the UI back, I took matters into my own hands and uninstalled the latest version and manually installed the last good version (2024.11.2) from Github.
It’s right here if you need to go that route: Release Browser v2024.11.2 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub
I’ve been helping people roll to that version as needed since it’s the easiest way to fix all the problems everyone has been having, and the BW team is ignoring this pretty simple step to restoring functionality.
Installing the old version of the extension is pretty straightforward. You unzip it into its own folder, go to manage extensions in Chrome, enable developer options, and “load unpacked” (after installing the new broken version, that is).
That version should in theory continue to work unless Bitwarden breaks something worse on their end to prevent people from using it.
Showing “All items” in the menu is a huge privacy problem, with no way to turn it off! Please understand this extension is being used in meetings, screen recordings, etc! Showing the list of sites the user ever registered on is a huge mistake!
Absolutely agree - how do we use Bitwarden 99% of the time - to fill in login details - so why put that functionality behind a tiny button rather than the entire row.
I think my complaint was that, the app UI is so much nicer than the website UI. So in my opinion the website UI should look like the app UI. I felt there was nothing wrong with the app UI.
This makes sense, but since the UX was great for both unlocking scenarios previously, I’m frustrated that now it’s worse for seemingly no benefit. I use my laptop mostly in clamshell mode (plugged into an external monitor and lid closed) so I don’t have access to the TouchID button in that usage. But I also will take it away from my desk to use it on the couch occasionally so I have Bitwarden configured to be able to use biometrics. Previously, both usages worked great, but now it’s cumbersome for using a password.
CHARACTER COUNT FEATURE FOR HIDDEN CUSTOM FIELDS
In the previous UI, when you revealed the contents of a hidden custom field, an extra button appeared which would display the numbering of each character in the field. This helped enormously in filling those changing login fields which asked for 6th, 10 and 12th (or similar) characters of a known string.
This extra feature seems to have disappeared in the new UI. Is there a new approach to displaying the numbering of hidden custom field characters? Have I overlooked it somewhere?
@MartinRosenberg Welcome to the forum!
Your comment brings up many good points, but also promulgates some misunderstandings. Please see below for comments/clarifications:
The option to move an item to a collection was previously accessed from a “Move to Organization” link on the “View Item” page. In the new UI, this action is named “Assign to Collections”, and is available in the overflow menu (kebab icon) already on the “Vault” tab. Personally, I think that most or all of the actions in the overflow menu should also be duplicated on either the “View Item” or “Edit Item” page, so that one doesn’t have to backtrack if the item has been opened. There is a lot of room at the bottom of the “View” and “Edit” pages where additional buttons/icons could be placed.
the dropdown is present, but always grayed out.
This is actually a new feature (although I agree that presenting it as a dropdown is confusing; the selector arrow should be omitted). Previously, it was impossible to identify the item owner (without using the vault filter). In the new UI, this information is displayed when opening the “Edit Item” page.
I think it’s a mixed bag. There should either be a user-settable time-out, so that persistence only lasts if the extension is re-opened within X minutes, or they should provide a Home button to allow a quick return to the main Vault view — or both.
The only time I don’t want this is if I was in the middle of editing an item (which was really my only complaint about the old UI, and is the only thing this redesign improved).
Well, I have bad news for you: the current implementation of the persistence feature is only a bookmark — it does not retain any changes made to the state of the bookmarked page, including unsaved changes made while editing. Hopefully the current persistence feature is still a work-in-progress, with plans to implement a true peristent state in the future.
Somehow, even though everything is smaller, it also manages to take up more room.
Yes, good observation. I think that the issue is with the new font selection (DM Sans?), which has an unusually reduced height for lowercase letters only. Thus, there is no savings in vertical space efficiency (because uppercase letters still need to be accommodated), and having the lowercase letters be at the same height as previously will take up a lot of horizontal space.
Turning standard radio buttons into tabs is confusing and pointless.
What are you referring to here? The password generator interface?
The tiny Fill button instead of using the whole item as a fill button is significantly worse
I think this is debatable (see counterarguments here).
The fact that an item can’t be deleted from the Edit screen is just silly.
Agreed! Previously, the Delete function was available both on the “View Item” page and on the “Edit Item” page. If it will only fit on one of those two pages, it would make more sense to put the delete function on the “Edit” page.
Please kindly provide an option to use the old more space/time efficient UI.
The new design is more space efficient (EDIT: it is actually less space-efficient) than the old design! Enable these options: Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) - #107 by FaviFake
3 posts were split to a new topic: Double scrollbar bug in new browser extension UI
I was schocked about this UI update. Why???
At least we should hide the “fill” button, as it is not needed and takes space for text:
I also want quick access to my credit cards again. It needs some more clicks.
@Fenyem There are solutions to both of your problems!
The first issue can be fixed by widening the extension:
- Go to Settings > Appearance and set “Extension width” to Wide or Extra Wide
- If you liked the old design better, see these other suggestions: Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) - #106 by FaviFake
The second issue can be fixed by marking your most used items as favourites (including your cards!):
- To see a list of your cards, click the button next to the search bar to display filters
- Filter by Type > “Card”
- For each card, click the three dots > Favourite
- Your favorite items will always be displayed at the top, right below autofill suggesions
@FaviFake I appreciate your enthusiasm, but…
This is demonstrably not true. Compared to the old design (pre-“modernization”), the new “compact” mode has significantly lower information density in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions:
- At least 25% less information in the vertical dimension (it’s 25% less if filters are hidden; up to 50% less information shown if filters are visible).
- 30% less information in the horizontal dimension
- 20% fewer password characters visible on the unlock/login screen
Overall (on a per-area basis), the amount of information visible in the “new” compact mode is at best only 50% of what we used to be able to see.
The option to select a “wide” viewport may be an acceptable work-around for some users, but to be clear, making the extension viewport wider does not make it more “space efficient”, it just blocks a larger area of the underlying webpage — in addition, the width options do nothing to mitigate the increased need for scrolling resulting from the poor information density in the vertical dimensions.
I actually agree with your perspective, but I think it would be helpful for some other readers of this thread to understand how you could possibly think that the autofill button is not needed. How do you autofill your login credentials?
