Auto-fill suddenly stopped working (Firefox Desktop) after CCleaner?

Used BW for ages - love it - worked perfectly until suddenly last week stopped working in Windows desktop Firefox 130.0. App version 2024.8.1.

Ctrl-shift-L used to work fine, all the time … now does not.
Selecting the extension and choosing autofill for websites all used to work fine, all the time … now does not. None of my saved logins, even this forum, error “Unable to autofill … copy and paste instead”. But the plugin is detecting what domain I’m on and presenting only valid logins.

I tried removing the extension and adding it again … no luck.

Last change I recall is a CCleaner run (it’s an app to get rid of Windows bloat like temporary files and cache). The settings I used for FF were to clean ‘Crash reports’ ‘Download history’ and ‘Compact databases’. I’ve done this many times in the past no issues, so maybe this isn’t the cause.

Over in Chrome … working as per usual.

What can I try to get my lifesaving autofill back for Firefox? Thank-you kindly.

Same here!
I am on Edge Browser. Everything was fine, but stopped autofilling out of the blue.

Any hints welcome!

Just installed Chrome and tested there, also not working.

Take note of this post by @cagonzalez, a Bitwarden employee. In it he states “we did re-architect elements of the inline menu that have exacerbated the problem”. Although he was discussing Passkeys on Safari, it would not surprise me that the re-architecting affects other clients too.

The important take-away for me is that the developers are aware of auto-fill issues and have fixes forthcoming. So, either revert to an older version for a while or live with the limitation knowing that a fix is on the way. And, if you believe you have encountered a unique case, file a bug report about it.

I refreshed Firefox and the problem is solved.

Step by step if you need it:

  1. Save your open tabs if you want to retain them:
  • Right click on any tab and “Select all tabs”
  • Right click on any tab and select “Bookmark tabs” (maybe name the group with today’s date)
  1. Save all your bookmarks and preferences:
  • Create a Firefox account if you don’t have one
  • Ensure your Firefox is logged in to your Firefox account
  • Ensure sync is configured to save everything you want to keep. I sync everything except passwords.
  • Ensure sync is on and check sync has completed
  • Click ‘sync now’ under your account to be sure.
  1. Refresh Firefox:
  • Exit Firefox
  • Go to Windows add/remove programs
  • Find Firefox and click uninstall
  • Select the “Refresh” option
  • Let it do its thing
  1. Firefox should restart
  • There is no need to import anything from a previous browser. Select “Skip this step”
  • Be patient while it re-installs your extensions and sync’s everything
  • Sign-in again to Bitwarden and test autofill on one website you have saved
  • I found the best success to exit Firefox and open it again at this point
  • Find your saved tabs and choose ‘open all tabs’ (or just one you want)

Trust this helps someone out!
