Autofill NO LONGER WORKS on Windows/Firefox

Windows 10 22H2
Firefox 129.0.2
Bitwarden 2024.7.1 Shell 31.2.0

Bitwarden can’t autofill any entries I’ve added in the last week or so. I’ve rebooted this machine, doesn’t help.

Entries I added before 7-8 days ago work fine. None added after do. Symptom: “There are no logins available to auto-fill for the current browser tab”
This happens whether I manually add the entry to the Bitwarden desktop client, or allow the browser plugin to add it. If I allow the plugin to add it, it appears in the desktop client. After that, the plugin still fails to locate the entry and still claims there are no logins available to autofill.

The new entries were added, some 3 days ago, some 2, some 1, some just now. None work.

I’ve done syncs in the browser plugin, syncs in the desktop program, waited days, rebooted. Nothing helps.

I’ve edited the entries in the desktop client, adding dozens of variations and simplifications of the URL I see in my browser. It always fails to match.

The URL match has always been set to “Default match detection” and I just checked: It’s set that way for the ones that work, and it’s also set that way for the ones that don’t work.

Because I have a lot of local logins on my local network, I’m having trouble with dozens of matches popping up. When I log into my local Plex server, the correct match is buried in a huge list. For example, my TrueNAS and Thecus servers all appear, as do a dozen server logins. I’ve been trying to set these to more precise matches, but that’s been pretty fruitless so far.

The current problem is the opposite: It finds zero matches, even when one or even two may exist. I can use the desktop client to copy to the clipboard, then switch to the browser and paste, but that’s a lot more cumbersome.

This has to be a bug in the plug related to Firefox 129, but I can’t figure out how that could be true, or what to do about it. HELP!

No responses- can anyone suggest a direction to pursue this thing? If not, I may have to discontinue use of Bitwarden entirely.

Today’s attempts to fix it: removed the BitWarden plug-in from Firefox, shut down all instances of Firefox, started it back up, re-added the plug in. Results: Firefox still cannot find the entries in the desktop client, offers to add them, and if you add them, they appear in the desktop client as expected, but if you subsequently try to use them in Firefox, it again cannot find them.

Bitwarden has stopped being useful at all and has become a liability– I did a sync in the browser and sometime before or after that, it threw away an entry I had created for a credit bureau. It’s no longer anywhere in my vault under any name in any folder, and I have no other record of it. These are passwords that are very difficult to recover. I can no longer trust this app.

Not sure if this is related, but I’ve started getting an issue with not being able to autofill in Firefox on Linux (Ubuntu 22). If I open the Bitwarden extension dropdown, it does find the right logins for the site, but it’s stopped autofilling, and gives an error when I try to manually trigger it using “Auto-fill” in the entry.

Not sure if something has changed in the plugin, Firefox, or in my own settings - I did turn off my Firefox passwords recently, but strange seeing someone else getting related problems.

Interesting, tho as you say, your problem is slightly different. In my case, the browser plugins say there’s no match and offers to create one. If I create one, I see it in the desktop client, but the plugins again say “No logins available to auto-fill…” But what really breaks it for me is throwing away credentials. I have no good recovery path for the one I know for sure it dumped-- it was for a credit bureau.

I think it’s working again, tho I’m very wary. Apparently the 2024.7 plug-in has some bugs. Upgraded to the 2024.8.x version and it seems better. Not sure yet.

You might take advantage of this “loss” as a reminder in the importance of backups. Backups should be created at least as frequently as one can tolerate loss. Do keep old backups (a flash drive can hold hundreds of them) and an offsite backup-of-your-backup to protect against house-fire.

The best format to use for Bitwarden backups is "Json (encrypted) and password-protected. Also, be sure to add the password to your emergency sheet.

FWIW, I did just now (using the Windows vault, 2024.8.1) create a test entry and then deleted it. It did show up in the trash for me.

I am having exactly the same issue on Firefox 129.0.2 and BW plugin 24.8.0 on Fedora 40. I only noticed it within the last couple of days, which is roughly aligned to the last major software upgrade I’ve done.

Coincidentally or not, Autofill seems to be working for me again. I know what you mean about being able to trust a service though - sadly I suspect no service or plugin is 100% reliable, but a couple of issues will put me into a more cautious mode, and make me start thinking about switching. We’ll see how it goes.

I have those versions and the same behaviour, which is pretty annoying :frowning:

Also having the same issue on Firefox/Linux. I’ve opened a GitHub bug for this here: Autofill has stopped working across all sites in Firefox on Linux · Issue #10815 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub
