Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0)

New design is a mess and its hard to use… Dont like it at all… even reviews are 90% negative…i also changed my 5 star review to 1 star.
With this new design you ruin your reputation…

@Inemene, 5 stars to 1 star seems somewhat extreme, don’t you think? There’s absolutely nothing left that it’s useful to you for anymore?

This is some great news and great work with users’ feedback!

Still waiting for 2024.12.4 to find its way to Firefox.

So for you Bitwarden went from being an amazing product to a useless product? Just because the button to autofill is smaller than before?

It’s almost as if making the one thing that you use the software for 99.9% of the time more difficult was a bad decision.

This update is so bad, and so hated, that many are manually rolling back to the old version and disabling auto-updates. This is a huge failure for Bitwarden, and for software security in general. How many people are going to remember to re-enable updates after Bitwarden (hopefully) fixes this atrocious UI update? I sure hope that no major vulnerabilities are found in the last usable version of Bitwarden.

I’ll be honest,
The best solution here is to revert the extension. The old one was working perfectly. If you want to bring that new design with rounded corners everywhere, it should be just a theme. It can even be the default theme.

So the idea is… same layout and functionality as before but with the new visual design. I promise y’all, this is the best solution.

I feel like now, you’re doing the work twice of bringing back every functionality that were ALREADY there before, and that were working well.

I don’t understand how this happened. Luckily, I was able to revert the update on both chrome and firefox.

@Creamlike7 @Pickicool_LePenseur You can already bring back the “Click to autofill” feature and “fix” other issues by changing a few settings: Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) - #107 by FaviFake

This is an overstatement, as there are several important aspects of the old UX that are still lost:

  • The ability to see 8–10 items at once without scrolling.
  • The ability to search for websites to launch, without irrelevant autofill suggestions obscuring the search results.
  • The ability to see multiple URIs (and launch them with a single click and no scrolling), when opening a login item for viewing.
  • The ability to autofill Card and Identity items with a single click.
  • The ability to see if a vault item is shared, when the item name is longer than 11 characters.
  • The ability to take useful actions from the View Item screen (e.g., Autofill, Autofill & Save, Clone, and Move to Organization).
  • The ability to see the full password when in the View Login screen, if it has more than 25 characters.
  • The ability to see more than 32 characters in the master password when logging in or unlocking the vault.
  • The ability to see a history of modified hidden fields for Secure Notes, Cards, or Identities.
  • (Until the fix is rolled out), the ability to drag-and-drop data from vault item fields.

They absolutely did not fix it, they made some things less terrible.

Yeah sure, but every major complaint (except maybe seeing 10 items at once) has been addressed. I assumed those weren’t the issues the messages I was replying were referring to.

I’m just saying that claiming that you can “bring back” the old UX is disingenuous, and will have the opposite effect of what you (presumably) intended (which I assume is to placate those who are upset about the UI changes). I would recommend being more precise in how you describe the effects of the Settings changes that you are suggesting.

And for me, most of the issues I listed are, in fact, “major complaints”.

Thanks for adding back a feature to make “fill” the default action when clicking an entry! That helps address my many years of muscle memory.

It would make sense to me if when that option was enabled, then add an “edit” option to the entry’s three dot menu dropdown so you didn’t have to “View” before editing.

Thanks!

While we’re at feature requests, along with the “extra wide” and “compact” options, i’d appreciate an “extra tall” option to reduce scrolling. The default size uses only a quarter of my browser vertical height. (using a 4k 43" dell monitor)

@grb It is a bit painful to see that list - but it is true. And I would add again, the worse readability (font-/contrast-topic) - and the password generator got worse in some regards (I don’t understand why the slider was removed, converting it into empty space - PS: and why the arrow buttons have to be invisible until you are on them with the mouse).

And possibly, there is still more to add to the list.

I think someone from BW said, that would come back with the next release. I sure hope so. (can’t remember the source at the moment)

Why just for those items? - I think that may be an idea for every item. Independent of which auto-fill behaviour you choose.

I too would appreciate that option. Thanks for suggesting it.

Hoping though that “extra wide” is just a stop-gap on the way to enabling window resize by dragging the corner/edges.

Seems like the majority of your concerns would be addressed by making compact mode more compact and/or the window resizable.

I also note that wide/extra wide mode improves 3 of them (see shared, see password, master password). And, @t0n3’s “extra tall” suggestion would improve 2 more (see 8-10 items, see multiple URIs)

You’re not going to see more than 6 words in a passphrase (51 characters) even in Extra Wide mode.

The width increase options do not come without cost, as they obscure the underlying web page (e.g., the Submit button for a form that you are autofilling).

In 2022 (after the ill-fated 2022.12.0 redesign), I did make a feature request for being able to resize the pop-up window. This would mitigate some issues, but as I’ve noted above, increasing the size of the pop-up has its own disadvantages. A true compact mode is what is needed (besides fixing the handling of Cards/Identities, and other issues).

Yeah I guess you’re right, I edited my comment to clarify what I ment.

hence improve, not fix.
