Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0)

I completely agree with the concerns raised here. The recent update has made Bitwarden much harder to use. The removal of the folder view is especially frustrating—having all logins lumped together in one big list makes it difficult to find specific entries, whether they were just saved or added a while back but aren’t showing up in search.

Additionally, the extra step added to the fill button (choosing username or password) feels unnecessary and slows down the login process. Please consider bringing back the old folder view and restoring the previous fill option behavior. It was much more user-friendly!

Well, that is completely inaccurate. I have no affiliation with Bitwarden, other than as a customer (and as a volunteer community moderator on this forum).

You may be misremembering a comment I had written on Dec. 23 about dwbit’s return to the forum.

I’m not dragging my organization off of Bitwarden, but I am sticking with the old 2024.11.2 for the foreseeable future and am forwarding all user issues to the bitwarden support team, as I will not be answering UX questions/complaints.

You are correct.

Folder Drop

When editing an item, it is very difficult to see the folder path. Currently, the only work around is to increase the width of the extention via Settings > Appearences.

Could we make the folder dropdown when editing an item the same as the folder dropdown when filtering on the main vault?

I switched from LastPass to Bitwarden at the recommendation of many security experts and the YouTube channel “Security Now”. I use Bitwarden to store my more than 300 passwords, product keys, credit cards, and other items I want to keep secure and encrypted. I also use it to login to all of my online accounts. For this, Bitwarden does an excellent job and NO complaints. I really do not understand what all the fuss is regarding the new UI. I have not experienced any issues with it at all. It is my understanding that many of these changes came from suggestions by the users themselves. Most people do not post comments in forums unless they have something to complain about. The ones having no issues will normally not post. I have seen this on many other forums, as well as this forum. Also, people do NOT like change! This is very evident with the Windows OS. With only 10 months left until Windows 10 is no longer supported by Microsoft, 62% of users are still using it and have not upgraded to Windows 11. Windows 11 was released over three years ago and only 32% have upgraded. I myself have seen no reason to upgrade.

I want to be one who posts a positive comment here regarding the Bitwarden updated UI. I am sure that some of the relevant suggestions will be incorporated into the next update.

Welcome, @tbigley2011 to the community!

Not quite sure about which on you are referring to, but

As of Bitwarden version 2024.12.1, you can restore the copy username/password/totp buttons by:
Settings >> Appearance >> Show quick copy actions on Vault

As of Bitwarden version 2024.12.4, you can set auto-fill by default (instead of open vault) by:
Settings >> Autofill >> Click items to autofill on vault view.

I understand your UX developers want to keep a job but this is TERRIBLE from a usability standpoint.

You’ve now added an extra click to every single field I wish to fill, and added this tiny little button to click when i actually want to use a major feature of this program.

In addition, you’ve now removed the option for custom themes.

This really is just a huge regression just for your UX developers to have an excuse for doing something for 6 months. I would love to hear the justification made for half of these changes but we never will because there never was any logic behind these changes.

Its evident that little to no usability testing was done on this update.

Hey, I think it’s 2024.12.4.

Thanks for the automated response,

Unfortunately on Version 2024.12.3 those don’t seem to exist.

Sorry, fixed my typo. For the record, the response was not automated.

Will the sizing of the panel and buttons be considered as well?

Looking at this screenshot, we now have two massive bars on the top and bottom of the fly out, where the main usable buttons are some of the smallest on the entire program.

I would highly recommend reconsidering which buttons are actively most used on this software and consider making those larger.

Do we really need two bars at the top and bottom with gigantic buttons that are used much less frequently than for example, fill, and copy?

@MFKDGAF, the sole way to achieve that for the entire application would be to migrate the disparate codebases to a single one written in a cross-platform manner, which is explicitly undesirable to BW, as evidenced by their recent migration of the AOSP and i(Pad)OS applications to separate codebases from a previously single one, in order to provide intra-platform consistency.

Both approaches have significant advantages and disadvantages, and I really like their new AOSP application specifically because of how it adheres to Material 3 + You design guidelines.

Otherwise, strings can be unified across disparate codebases, but there isn’t a feasible way to automate verifying that they are, so it requires manual QA. Since they already use a translation platform (which @grb previously confirmed, when they helpfully corrected me) [1] the relevant “systems” are in place.

When I check Latest Topics on this forum and sort them by the amount of Replies [link], this topic is the first. In just a few weeks the UI/UX downgrade sparked so much emotion (I’d like to say “hate”) that it surpassed other that have been around for years.

One would think that this is a clear indicator that something is very wrong with the release and it warrants reverting to the previous version. Well… apparently not. A few half-fixes is enough to keep this abomination going. I wonder what are the thoughts on this design inside the company and if it is considered a success internally.

Like many here, I am a great fan and a long time user of BitWarden.

And like like most here, I ABSOLUTELY DETEST the 2024.12 UI changes. It brings nothing new of any consequence as far as I can determine, it’s less intuitive, takes up more screen space, and requires more mouse clicks for all the operations I typically use.

As such, I’ve reverted to the previous, older version (2024.11) untill such time as the developers return it, hopefully, to its former self (or similar).

What a complete waste of developer time, in my opinion - the old UI did not need updating.

What on earth were the developers thinking??

i agree with everyone else here, this UI update sucks. it’s seriously making me consider moving to another password vault provider (ive been around since bitwarden’s beginning).

Is there someone that can explain what is good about the new UI? I sincerely just don’t understand. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, what am I missing?

Hi Geo,

I think your point about Windows is spot on but as a counter point. If Bitwarden gave users a choice, I think the situation would be the same. You yourself have not upgraded to Windows 11 for a reason even if it’s the absence of a good reason.

Also, the reverse of your argument that people only comment to complain is also true. People that wanted to change the UI complained where the vast majority did not bother.
