Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0)

This new UI is really bad and worse in every conceivable way. It looks awful on my 4K display. It’s huge and bloated and wastes so much space and gives me less in the same space.

My immediate gripe with it came within literally 1 second of me using the new Firefox extension. I simply clicked the icon so I could fill a password and when I clicked on the credential it opened the credential as if I wanted to view it or edit it instead of filling the credential. You must now click this tiny little “Fill” button. What a stupid design choice, among all the others.

It seems Bitwarden has fallen down the same terrible path as most every other tech company these days. They get their interface working. It’s great. It has the functionality everyone needs and gets the job done efficiently and everyone is happy. Then you have all these middle managers and UI designers who need to justify earning their salary who “need” to be put to work changing things for no particular reason other than to justify their existence at the company.

Bitwarden, seriously, you need to let some UI designers go and whichever managers were responsible for allowing this to happen. Their mission is complete and all that can happen now is your interface becomes worse and worse overtime by being redesigned a million times just so someone can collect a paycheck.

Just keep enough around to maintain the code, fix bugs and incrementally add new features if they are needed. After that, it’s okay to admit you made a mistake and revert to the previous interface which is significantly better looking and more usable and efficient.

@chipdankly, I ultimately disagree that it’s a regression, for it’s significantly more quick and visually consistent (even if that appearance is potentially worse).

However, some decisions are rather objectively nonsensical:

  1. Button spacing is inconsistent:

    Screenshot_20241224_175323

There’s a single Unicode space between the username, password, and TOTP generation clipboard duplication buttons, which aren’t present between the TOTP generation clipboard duplication and overflow buttons.

This inconsistency reduces space available whilst providing no increase to the affected buttons’ invocation targets.

Additionally, whilst “Fill” is outlined, its aforementioned counterparts are not, so even the button style is inconsistent.

  2. Navigation bar hides in configuration page:

Why does the navigation bar hide?

    Origin

    moz-extension:\/\/[0-9A-Fa-f]{8}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{12}\/popup\/index\.html#\/appearance

  3. Navigation bar text is almost 2em:

Why is the navigation bar’s font so ginormous?!

    Origin

    moz-extension:\/\/[0-9A-Fa-f]{8}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}-[0-9A-Fa-f]{12}\/popup\/index\.html#\/tabs\/settings

@rokejulianlockhart Before I address the substance of your post, I notice in your screenshots that have apparently customized the font family used in the extension. I would be interested in knowing how you did this, if you care to PM me (so as not to go off-topic in this thread).

The bottom navbar is only level when viewing the four top-level pages “Vault”, “Generator”, Send", and “Settings”, and disappears as soon as opens any other view in the UI.

This can get very confusing if one has drilled down into a deeper level of the UI (e.g., Vault > View > Edit > Attachments), so that several repeated clicks of the “Back” (< ) button are required to return to the main Vault page (three clicks are needed in my example above).

For this reason, I have proposed the addition of a :house: Home button on all views other than the four top-level pages, as shown in the mock-up below:

This is to make the navigation buttons easier to press using your thumb. …oh wait, we’re not discussing the mobile app? No clue, then! :person_shrugging:

Wow, The Old Version Was So Much Better!

ATTENTION BITWARDEN DEVS!!!

JUST ADD CHOOSEABLE THEMES.

• New Fancy-Shmancy Theme For 12 Year Olds.

• Bitwarden Classic Theme For Adults.

Then We Can All Have What We Want.

Thanks For Understanding.

Have A Great Day.

@robdaemon @chipdankly Hey, welcome to the forum!

See this message from the Bitwarden team regarding features currently in development (such as bringing back the old autofill workflow):

If you want, you can already get a UX closer to the old one (such as different buttons to copy username and password) by changing a few settings: Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) - #107 by FaviFake

I agree to everything said before. I trust bitwarden because it always puts function (security & performance) over looks.

Form FOLLOWS Function.

The phrase “form follows function” is famously attributed to the American architect Louis Sullivan (1856–1924). Sullivan, often called the “father of skyscrapers” and “father of modernism,” first articulated the concept in his 1896 essay, “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered.”

Sullivan’s idea was rooted in his belief that a building’s design should reflect its purpose, and this philosophy greatly influenced modern architecture and, later, design disciplines like UX and product design. While Sullivan’s original focus was on architecture, the principle has been broadly adopted across design fields to emphasize the importance of function in shaping form.

Hey @kezz, let me know if you tried switching back to the classic copy view and selecting wide or extra wide mode. You can also collapse the filter area by tapping the filter button.

  • Change copy behaviour > Settings > Appearance > Show quick copy actions on vault
  • Change extension width > Settings > Appearance > Extension Width > Wide/Extra wide

If you’re referring to a different issue, let me so I can pass it along to the team.

What was the last extension version with the old interface?

I see this time and time again. There may be good UX ideas here - there may be not - I’ve got no clue 'bout UX.

I had build up muscle memory for the old design.

You can do as much UX stuff as you want - you can’t beat muscle memory with a new design - even if it’s better for new users. Always a tradeoff.

I was unhappy enough to create an community account. Hope you are confident that your current design will last for 10 years

If I could heart this more than once I would. There are too many other companies out there who would just let this feedback die in the threads rather than taking action.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! In the new update that’s rolling out, you can choose your preferred copy method:

Settings > Appearance > Show quick copy actions on vault

Sure would be nice if I could reach the Settings button without having to expand the size of my Firefox sidebar. Why is it so pointlessly wide? Did you even test this on smaller monitors?

Im talking aboit UI preferences, not just UX.

You can see the screenshot that @Nail1684 posted:

Old UI was much better. (And yes, i tried the option of “Show quick copy actions”. It’s not what I’m talking about.

Jeeeez guys… It’s not that difficult to understand. Look at this whole topic. Plus there’s like 20 different other topics about the same issue popping up each day. There are at least a hundred new users signing up for the first time just to complain about this. Open your eyes.

All I’m saying is just add an option to go back to the old classic theme. You see the screenshot? Make it look how it was before (as an optional theme). That’s all I’m asking. That’s all WE’RE asking.

So pass that along to the team.

If you just created chooseable themes and keeping the classic one as an option, this whole topic would never have even existed.

What a waste of time and resources. Go add the ability to login with Passkey to the extension. Go add the ability to login with Passkey to the Android app and the iOS app. Go do things that matter.

I really hope this new design is not going to last or, at the very least, that it is going to be heavily worked on and improved upon.

I am truly sad to say this, but the new redesign stinks of enshittification and does not inspire the same feelings of confidence or reliability that came with the personality of the previous design. But instead it gives off the vibes of “generic company that does not care about its user base”.

I fully understand that any changes in the UI is going to be poorly received at first, and I actually can appreciate and thank the Bitwarden team for putting effort into it. As a long time supporter of both their products and their policies on privacy and openness, I KNOW that they are very serious and dedicated people.

And in some way, I almost felt all that dedication and seriousness in the old design. However, as previously mentioned, this design just gives me the feeling of “dull”.

I sincerely hope the UI team is going to listen to the community’s feedback and work out an improved design that stays true to the mission of this amazing project.

This. 100x this. I really don’t understand why this is so hard to understand. It’s willfully tone deaf at this point with the amount of feedback presented. If I did my job like this I’d probably already have been fired and had my work completely swept aside in an emergency measure to try to stop the bleeding and prevent further customer turnover.

Glad to see I’m not the only one that hates the new updated UI, I made an account just so I could make a comment. I’ve been using the Bitwarden Firefox extension for over 5 years and I’m appalled.

Yes the old UI needed updating, but why in the whole someone thought it was a good idea to take away the most essential parts of the UI (e.g. only showing logins for a specific tab) and change them into something so diabolical I have no idea.

I’ve seen this happen with so many applications and extensions and I still don’t understand why this happens. A few people complain about minor things and instead of doing some Q&A and testing you jump head first into a design that make users unsubscribe, disble updates or delete the extension entirely.

GG.

man. i don’t mind the new look, but for the most common action, filling out the fields of a login form. that’s now soooo much harder. what about people who have motor disabilities? I’ve worked with UX people/teams before. I’ve seen the results from the outside on other software I’ve used.

I’m not sure how this happens in the software industry, but it is rare that the right combination of people and incentives line up to make software better, which in this instance for a PASSWORD MANAGER took a step backwards in usability to fill out passwords. my god.

@edk Hi!

There is already “news” to that:

On the one hand, the new “Fill” button will become larger ([PM-16102] Add min width on interactive badges by vleague2 · Pull Request #12514 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub) and additionally, the clickable area around that button will get larger ([PM-16102] Increase clickable area for bit-item actions by vleague2 · Pull Request #12450 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub).

On the other hand, the old auto-fill behaviour (clicking the item that get’s shown as an auto-fill suggestion leads to auto-fill) will get back as an option ([PM-16428] Option for primary click action to autofill on Vault view by kspearrin · Pull Request #12557 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub).

Update: The old auto-fill behaviour comes back as an option with extension version 2024.12.4. Can be activated by: Settings → Auto-fill → “Click items to autofill on Vault view”

“We also recognize that many of you prefer the previous autofill and vault/tab behaviour, so we’re working on the following setting menu options…”

Although I think this avalanche of negative user feedback about the UI changes is completely justified, I want to thank the developers for recognizing that there is a problem and deciding to address it.
Also, lets not forget that we shouldn’t take their work for granted. BW is a pretty excellent and free app/extension that has served me well for years.

I do think most of the UI changes in the update are pretty uninspired. They seem like the kind of changes that are made for the sake of… changing something. It feels like someone decided to just move stuff around, arbitrarily, without any specific goal in mind, and in the process took the productivity and usability down several notches. “Oh lets limit the ‘fill’ function to a tiny button that the user has to aim at, tediously, with the mouse, even though filling credentials is probably the most used feature in this app.” Same with the copy buttons which I also use frequently especially between devices (Windows phone link allows copying/pasting between my PC and my Android phone) - I see absolutely no upside to hiding the buttons. It also feels like the people who made the changes aren’t regular users of the extension. Or, if they are, they don’t use it the way the average browser user does. Just something to consider.
