The icon for that button should be a pencil icon , which most people interpret pretty consistently as “edit”, because that’s what the function of that button should be. Clicking anywhere on the card should autofill. Problem solved.
Hopefully, Bitwarden management is able to resist the Sunk Cost Fallacy…
The underlying problem is that Bitwarden does not appear to use any kind of data-driven or evidence-based approaches in their design process. Bitwarden has described their “design philosophy” and process here, and it doesn’t seem to include any quantitative usability studies other than simple surveys. In contrast, they seem to rely almost exclusively on community feedback from social media and feedback forms.
Would love to see some professionals conduct a rigorously controlled A/B study on the old vs. new UI, but that would require Bitwarden to hire outside consultants.
Finally, for all that is wrong with the new UI, there are also some bright spots. For example, it is great to no longer have to click a Confirm button on the passkey prompt, and to no longer have to click through the superfluous “Overwrite password” prompt when generating a new password for an existing item. The search filters (and the ability to toggle the filter visibility) are also a positive addition, in my opinion.
If the Sunk Cost Fallacy is overcome, and the UI reverted, a post-mortem analysis (data-driven, please!) could be done to decide which of the new features to keep.
If the Sunk Cost Fallacy is not overcome, then we need to push hard for implementation of a functional “Ugly Mode” that prioritizes efficient functionality over appearance.
But understand, everyone has a different use case for this tool.
When there’s a survey, I’ll admit freely, I don’t have time to fill anything out - my fault. But people who give these opinions might represent only 0.01% of use cases, and for them, these changes are the best.
Today it should look like this:
We introduce a new filter view - meaning we add options in settings - change filter view - style1 style2
We introduce a change in how the entire tile button works to preview instead of autofill - meaning we add options in settings - change entire tile function to preview - on / off
and this way we add more functions without forcefully making people happy whose world is “falling apart” even if just due to habit.
I can say from my own experience, I have plenty of problems at work and in life, the last thing I thought about was that I’d be pouring out my frustrations on Bitwarden’s forum because someone decided that “from now on you’ll struggle like this, because that’s what we came up with!”
What did I do to deserve this? why is a tool that I love now literally a source of stress, because I feel helpless and don’t know what to do.
It’s unbelievable, I never thought a plugin would upset me so much and affect my life. - madness.
I work in tech and can tell you that it’s not realistic (or maintainable) to have options for every single feature. Trust me, I have opinions and gripes with much of the software I use on a daily basis, but I understand that the more complex the codebase is, the more brittle and buggier it becomes. UX is tough to please everyone, but I do think there are some low-hanging fruit that Bitwarden can tackle to address a lot of the complaints without needing to completely revert or needing a user-configurable interface.
I’m not a big fan of a lot of this update, but this response to a redesign of a small piece of software is not healthy. I would highly recommend speaking with a professional if this is causing you significant enough stress that it’s affecting your life.
This slow autofill in the new 12.0 version happens when you have a large number of items (500+) in your vault. When your vault has less than 50 items it is almost instant autofill like in the 11.2 version.
Did you also notice this slow autofill process in a vault with large number of items (even though the autofill suggestions are four or five matches at most).
Good lord this re-design is terrible. Another sign up specifically here just to complain about this.
I cannot easily just fill a password in by clicking - now I need to specifically hit the tiny button. Why would I want to view the details compared to filling a form on a website I’m on as the default action when generally clicking an entry?
Grabbing things like my 3-digit security code for a credit card is a pain compared to before, though I just realized I could turn on some old ‘quick copy’ buttons from the settings, and changing the plugin to be ‘wide’ helps a bit, but it still feels cluttered.
This plugin has one freaking main job - make it easy for me to get my saved passwords into the websites I’m trying to log in to. Why would you make that more difficult?
This is just a shockingly poor design direction from what you had previously. I was perfectly happy before and would have recommended Bitwarden to anyone. I’ve heard no strong stance in these comments that using the old version will be possible, or anything besides tweaks and small changes will happen, so at this point I need to actively look for alternatives.
But I cannot right click on item to choose “fill and save” e.g.
Agreed, this is the most perplexing change.
See here for instructions for the context menu auto-fill: https://bitwarden.com/help/auto-fill-card-id/#using-the-context-menu
Shitty workaround, but you can “favorite” your cards to basically reproduce what you used to have in the old extension. Just make sure you favorite them in alphabetical order - there is no drag/drop to rearrange them, which itself is a burdensome experience.
Well also, I just made a post about how autofill credit card entries are sorted randomly (instead of automatically alpha on the old tab page), and are intermixed with other autofill passwords for whatever site you’re on.
I registered here solely for the purpose to add more hate for this new UI/UX abomination. Whoever was in charge of this needs to be fired in all seriousness. They have absolutely no idea what they are doing and are not fit for that position. This is beyond bad UI element update, the new UI is worse in every aspect of user experience. I cannot even begin to comprehend how someone looked at this, was satisfied with the result and thought they improved the previous design.
Why take a perfectly functional UI with clear color division between elements and make it “modern” (meaning everything is twice the size, with less real estate, flat white, with stupid rounded borders).
- Why is everything white? Why is there no longer a blue top bar to display a clear division?
- Why are the icons black now? What was wrong with your blue ones that add some variety to the color scheme?
- Why is there a greyed-out “Verification code” icon when I do not use these? Does it need to be shown on every row even if not in use on that web page? (Yes, I know this was also in the previous UI - it just adds to the bad decisions with keeping it constantly shown after supposed UX overhaul.)
- Why is the Search field on its own row, thus decreasing the usable vertical real estate? So you can put a huge “+New” button up there? Is that really the most used option when I click on the Bitwarden extension icon?
- Why are the cells with passwords larger, yet the icons are smaller and they have less space for important information (such as longer e-mail addresses).
- Why do I need to click the stupid tiny “Fill” button to fill in username/password? Isn’t this the most used action? What was wrong with clicking on the whole row to fill in data?
- Why do I need to see “All items” on every page? What was wrong with showing these only when I searched for something? Is increasing unnecessary clutter part of UX overhaul?
- Hand-in-hand with the previous point: When there are “All items” shown, you need to see the scrollbar too. Now there is less horizontal real estate and the password cells are not aligned in the middle. Oh, I am sure someone will “fix” this by padding these on the left, making them even smaller.
The new UX/UI is simply terrible. Don’t you guys do any A/B testing with multiple users when trying out new ideas? Or someone has a vision and is oblivious to any feedback?
Let me tell you how you cannot fix this:
- By dismissing feedback in this topic and in Extension browser stores as a “vocal minority that is always resistant to any changes”. This is beyond one bad decision.
- By having 5 project meetings, fixing two items from the above list, and considering everything A-OK.
You really, really need to replace the person who was/is in charge of this. Then, you can add a “Classic” theme with the old UX/UI. Then, you can take all the time to properly fix this mess.
It seem that Birwarden fails to automatically recognize and fill my address when I land on a field that calls for that info. Then, I have to go to the dropdown box to select Identities and the request autofil. So, there are unnecessar extra steps.
@JimmyW Bitwarden was never able to do “Autofill on Page Load” for identity information — only for login items. If you want new functionality, please submit a Feature Request.
Yup that’s exactly what I wanted to say: I had forgotten the search bar now takes up more space. Idk why I said it wasn’t persistent, my bad.
I am not talking about context menu of browser but of the plugin itself. Or hasn’t it been there before?
Signed up to say what I am about to say and almost didn’t because of these issues.
First autofill isn’t working
Second the extension is HUGE NOW with crazy amount of wasted space
Third fonts are worse and harder on the eyes
Fourth fill button WHY?
Two clicks for copy WHY?
Why all my vault is located right on the start? Why not only relevant to current page
Its like all of you collectively lost your minds one day and your ability to reflect was taken away until it reached production. If you feel too useless because you have nothing to do anymore. Build another app. Don’t fix what ain’t broken. Please allow me to opt out of your current UI updates. Thank you.
Sorry, then I misunderstood. As far as I followed your post, you seemed to have asked about the “context menu” and @grb provided how to activate it in the settings. - So you meant more like a “hamburger menu” to access more options in the extension window itself? Or what exactly did you mean? (or “where” in the extension window - or for what?)
Yes I more refered to the hamburger menu. Was it accessible by right click on a item? Perhaps I am misleaded.
But could be an option to give more options to configure fill and copy icons.
E.g. Fill, Fill and Save, Copy TOTP, etc. could also alternativly go the menu.
Just an idea.
