Questions and import from 1Password

Hi,

  • Bitwarden is missing many categories of types. If I import a 1Password database, will I end up with an incomplete database in Bitwarden?

  • The inline-menü offers me a passphrase password instead of a “normal” password. Is it possible to change this?

  • Is it possible for the inline menu to suggest a username or generate something I can enter? Just like with a password. Bitwarden has a username generator.

  • TOTP codes still not filling automatically?

  • You can now display the number of characters in your password. Can you also display it in large print?

Greetings

@mutilator I’m not sure I can answer everything, but I’ll try to make a start:

I think, everything the exported file contains should get imported - but obviously not as their original “item type”.

BTW, here is a guide for importing form 1Password: Import Data from 1Password | Bitwarden

(PS: Here additionally the Troubleshooting section… and, generally spoken, sometimes Conditioning a CSV/JSON can be necessary, if it doesn’t work - though probably mostly necessary, when a file/source is not supported as a dedicated importer…)

The inline autofill menu generator should get it’s settings from the general generator’s settings of the browser extension - so if you change it there, it should change for the inline generator as well (though I think I remember, that there was/is ?! also a bug with that…).

I think, at the moment, only passwords/passphrases do get offered… but there will be an improvement for the inline generator for creating the whole new login item (see here: [PM-15436] Standalone password entry should trigger save to bitwarden prompt. by blackwood · Pull Request #14110 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub), opening the “New login item” dialog/view… and there, you can use the username generator.

The inline autofill menu can autofill TOTP codes from the integrated authenticator.

Large print in the sense of large font? Anyway, that view can’t be customized…

I hope Bitwarden integrates more item types. This bothered me almost two years ago, and nothing has changed.

I hope this is a bug. It’s a bit annoying.

Yes, like 1Password does.

I’m sure, if one knew how 1Password does it, that would help here.

You klick on “Display in large font.” This will display the password, including the number, in the entire window. With Bitwarden, it’s just displayed in small print in the password line.

Is it possible to set the default folder for new items or can I have a choice when saving?

Can you also access family folders? If they’re shared, of course.

Are the folders in Bitwarden comparable to the vaults in 1Password?

Ah. – There is a Feature Request (FR) to that: Password Size Font and Color

There are probably two FRs to this topic… Default ownership and default collection/folder when creating new vault item and Ability to configure a default folder in the settings of the browser extension

Yes. “Shared folders” are called “Collections” - and those need an (or exist in an) “Organization”. Here would be a good start (infos) to that: Organizations Quick Start | Bitwarden

(PS: You don’t necessarily need a “Families” subscription for that - here the overview for the “personal” (i.e. not-enterprise) accounts, that all allow for some “sharing”:

… here the complete table: Bitwarden Password Manager Pricing & Plans | Bitwarden)

I don’t know the definition of “vaults” in 1Password, but I think I read the comparison between “Organizations & Collections” (Bitwarden) and “vaults” in 1Password… (heresay!)

The Requests are from 2020 and 2021. Even after this time, these features aren’t available. Is Bitwarden not interested in what its users want?

I would recommend, having a look into these two lists:

… and, we have a voting system - not an “it’s the oldest one, let’s do it” system…

Personally, my impression is, that “under the hood”, security changes play an important role… some things maybe get a start in developement, then there’s a “roadblock” that doesn’t have an immediate solution and other things might get prioritized then… also, you have “outside events” changing some plans entirely - like the “sudden” appearance of passkeys in 2022… the last year (and probably starting before 2024) had big changes in UI and rewrite of some apps (the mobile apps went “native”, the browser extensions were made MV3 conforming, the desktop apps get a rewrite right now as I understand it…).

The UI adaptations are still ongoing (for all apps)… and my personal impression is, that when the UI changes and “code rewrites” are mostly done (for now), the focus will shift again to developing some more (wanted?!) features… (and, if you have a look into my links, the developement of new features never completely stopped also, I think)

Are you using Bitwarden and are you happy?

I’ve tested a few: 1Password, NordPass, Proton Pass, and KeePass.

1Password and Proton Pass are very good. Only Proton Pass doesn’t have a dedicated master password, which makes it unusable.

I wanted to give Bitwarden a try, but the missing item types make importing from 1Password impossible. It won’t be correct. I’m also not sure how convenient it will be with Collections/Organizations, including with Family.

The inline menu also doesn’t seem to be working properly. For example, at Formula 1®, my saved login is suggested under email and password instead of a password.

I wouldn’t be here if I wouldn’t. I mean, there are always things which are missing… – and I would also like to have some features (just to name two: sorting by date of creation/change/… (!) and login-passkeys for every app). But there is no essential feature missing so that you couldn’t use it at all.

I’m happy with the security, “open source” (with closed source - like 1Password - no one can really know if it’s as secure as promised…), that you have control over some things (I think 1Password doesn’t even have Argon2), that it’s easier than I thought in the beginning… it works on all platforms… you could use most functions for free - and even the premium tier… you get so much for just 10$/€ a year, it’s ridiculous actually.

And it’s like with people in life, I guess: you have to take them as they are – unless you can’t accept that at all and it’s time to part ways…

I started with KeePass (very shortly and unsuccessful) and KeePassXC (which I still like very much). – Coming from that, I was very happy about the cloud option… BTW, I still like the greater flexibility of KeePassXC’s generator much more (though it doesn’t provide the alias function, which I now use in Bitwarden)…

But I think I don’t compare much with other password managers. Of course, I would find some things I would like. But I guess I value what I have.

Well, you can’t argue about taste [I have some memories about that point @grb ], and the item types is a point I can understand - and I can’t understand it at the same time… I can understand, that it’s very convenient to have it sorted that way (and everything that comes along with that) - but on the other hand, I never once thought I couldn’t store something in Bitwarden. Or the other way round: I always could store everything in Bitwarden. If nothing else: Secure Note, give it a good name/item title and it’s stored there.

I have not extensively used that myself… If you have more than 2-3 people with various different access rules, it can be complex, as you probably would have to create some Collections, reflecting the different members having access only to certain items in certain Collections…

I’m not sure what exactly you mean here… the inline autofill menu shows up in both fields and clicking on it should fill both username and password. - I just tested this in your site and I had no problem to fill both:

You are on the F1 Login Site. I linked the register site.

On one site, the login page is incorrectly recognized. If I click in the username field, my login is suggested. If I click in the password field, a generated password is suggested instead of my saved login.

Does Bitwarden still maintain the Google list where you can report broken pages for the inline menu?

I hope 1Password isn’t doing anything wrong here. Bitwarden’s price for families is very fair. 1Password doesn’t have Argon2, but it does have an additional security layer.

I used your exact link. Somehow, it opens on the “login” section for me. ?!?

I’m not sure I follow your comments here (which exact site you mean) - if you can give me the exact links - and my browser/the site doesn’t change the target - I can test it again.

Yeah, I guess, you mean the Google forms:

Bitwarden icon does not appear on VT in the fields and therefore does not generate a password.

Thank you. And the Bitwarden team also checks the reports there?

I do hope only the Bitwarden team checks those reports.

Have you been able to test the links now?

I just revisited the F1 site…

With your new links, I could autofill (inline menu tested again) the login site. I could also autofill the register site (username/email and password). If I set the URI to “never” (could have also deleted the login item), I get the “New login” and “Generate password” suggestions as expected.

If you get offered the generator while having a login item for it, that might indicate the URI and/or matching detection is not optimal set up. What is your URI and match detection setting here?

Virustotal: Here, I don’t get the inline autofill menu for your link. - Right-click to open the context menu could be used to generate a password and fill it in (though, then you would also have to create the login item with it).

Baader Bank: Inline autofill menu offered me to create the login item. After that, I could autofill it on the same site.

But, I must say, I’m not sure if I saw everything now… I wanted to call it a day about an hour ago…

PS: I only tested the inline autofill menu now, as you spoke of it… other autofill methods (like the Fill button or keyboard shortcuts - Ctrl + Shift + L - could work also for autofilling). - And for the generator… you could also use the generator in the “New item” dialog… BTW, it’s recommended anyway, to first (!) create the new login item - and then create your new account with it. (or do both parallel…)

Standard. What would be the best Option for all saved logins?

Well, there is no definite - and easy - answer to that.

It depends on how convenient and/or how secure you want to have it.

Formula 1 example:

  • if you set up https://www.formula1.com as base domain (the default matching detection setting in Bitwarden), you should be have no problem with autofill on https://account.formula1.com/#/en/login as “base domain” fills everywhere on formula1.com

  • if you e.g. want it a little bit less broad and decide to use “host”, then you would have to add https://www.formula1.com as URI1 with “host” and https://account.formula1.comas URI2 with “host” to be able to autofill on the login site, as “host” differentiates between www. and account.

(PS: And if you used “host” with only https://www.formula1.com then autofill can’t show up on https://account.formula1.com !)

  • and very recently, I changed to using “exact” and “starts” with, as it restricts autofill to even less sites - so “more secure” - but you have to add even more URIs depending on which sub-sites you want to use and need “autofill”…

Thanks for the explanation.

  • Hidden passwords. Does that mean the person can also display hidden fields?
  • Manage collection. Does this mean the person can manage the entire folder? Save, modify, and delete?

There are good explanations in the Help Sites: Member Roles and Permissions | Bitwarden
