When you use the browser toolbar to open the Bitwarden dialogue and begin to edit a note or password, and then need to click off the toolbar window to capture data from something, say the address bar or a webpage etc, the dialogue disappears and you loose everything entered. This is really bad if you are entering a long secure note or a long recovery code for a OTP.
Also the Android app, if you are entering some data and have to switch to another app for too long, or if you have to stop and come back later, such that the lock screen comes up, you will loose all entered data.
Both of these have caused me significant headaches recently and not loosing data like this is a minor but significant improvement that is needed!
I could be satisfied with something like this, an option to add new items in a pop-out. (bonus points if the save button closed the pop-out window.)
I think this would need to be a configurable option that is disabled for current installations (maybe could get away with enabling it on new installations?). Based on recent feature releases that impact user interaction, I imagine there would be an uproar from several users who don’t like Bitwarden popping up in a new window.
The browser pop-up should not be closing unexpectedly for no reason, but it will close if you click anywhere in else in your browser window. If it is closing when you are not clicking outside the pop-up, then there may be a bug affecting your system.
You should be able to complete the entire account creation process in the browser extension pop-up without losing data.
Yes.
Sometimes I want to create a new entry, generate a password, but then if I want to copy in the URL or an email address it closes and looses the password.
The URL for the site should already be automatically populated in the login item creation form (if you’ve used the browser extension’s “Add a Login” function or + button).
Yes, but the topic is about persistent information. This is a feature request thread.
I appreciate your help but it doesn’t solve the problem that if you happen to click away for any reason, your data is lost.
I understand, but this is not going to be implemented in the next release, so in the meantime, I was trying to figure out if there is something else going on with your system or your work flow that is causing some of the problems you mentioned (pop-up closing for no reason, URLs not being auto-populated, etc.). Have a nice day!
Very often, if autofill fails due to a variety of reasons, I have to go to the extension to copy and paste the username and password. I am coming over from 1password, and this is a small, but noticable QOL feature they have. If I open the extension, type in a website, I can copy the username, go to paste it, reopen the extension, and the login is still there so I can easily copy the password.
In bitwarden, I have to open the extension, type in the website, copy the username. Then when I go back, I have to retype the website to copy the password.
If it would just remember where it was for 30 seconds, it would be a huge quality of life improvement in my opinion.
EDIT: This edit is after this post was merged.
I see this has been a request for 5 years. It is one of the only things that is really still making me consider staying with 1password. I hope this gets added soon.
I’ve noticed that if there are no logins matching the URL and I use the autofill “Add Login” option (either via the overlay or the context (right click) menu) to create the new login, it opens in a separate (pop-out) window. Which allows me to switch tabs / applications, copy and paste, etc. without loosing my progress.
When I hit save, the separate window closes (Yay!).
When I hit cancel or attmept ot close the window, I get a warning I’ll loose data with an option to leave or stay. (Leaving closes the pop-up).
I also tested closing my main window, then the pop-out, and my browser reopened with the main window (with my tabs) instead of losing them.
Idea/Thought for a Potential Quick Win
While not the solution I was initially hoping for (persisting the extension drop-down, or entering tiems in a tab), if the Add Login option was always present, I could at least have that as an option to Add Items that way to keep the window persistent.
Alternatively or Additionally, and this might get mixed opinions, I’d love an option to have the add item button in the extension function the same way. Personally, I think I would be satisfied if this was an option and the default (for new installations only so as to not mess with current user setup). Default for new users so that when I have family memebers join, their edits are not lost in switching contexts to copy/paste.
Just lost a crucial, unrecoverable cred due to this poor UX (and several others over a few months I could recover via pw resets etc). I thought I was loosing my mind until I caught myself in the act. Have also come from Lastpass and after a lot of anguish and through the test of time I have worked out the window closes if you have created the cred but not saved it. Highly likely to happen when you click off the window (to a CLI/terminal) to paste the password. Window gone. Cred gone. The user is not immediately aware not coming back and clicking save results in a disaster. At best an annoyance (recreating a cred), at worst, for me, permanent data loss…
Whenever someone is editing data in Bitwarden (either creating a new item or modifying one), Bitwarden should “go modal” until they click Save or Cancel.
To do otherwise risks losing all the data that they have entered into the window. The previous (current) extension has a “pop-out” facility that would do this, although it is not enabled by default.
I remain hopeful that the new Extension will adopt this technique of helping the person not lose data.
Here is a video of my experience creating a new entry, and losing data (twice!) when I wanted to go back to the website to look something up. Bitwarden should not allow someone to lose the data they typed without some confirmation that they want to do so. Thanks for listening.
I just noticed that the pop-out icon is still available. Changing the browser extension’s behavior to always pop out the window when creating/editing would completely address my concerns. (See the video.)
