Passwords App Autofill to Bitwarden not working as expected on IPhone

Im having an issue with the way IPhone Autofill to Bitwarden works.

I open any app (Say Gmail, Facebook, etc.) on my IPhone,

It prompts me to use Bitwarden saved Email and Password at the Autofill section right above the keyboard.

I press the Autofill suggestion > and it opens the Bitwarden overlay prompting for Master Password.

Then I press and hold the Master Password and then click on the “Autofill” Button. It prompts me asking which Password Manager I want to use, so I select “Passwords” app.

It authenticates with my Face ID and then nothing happens.

However instead of the app (Say Gmail, Facebook, etc.) , If I open Bitwarden directly and then autofill from Password, it authenticates my Face ID and then works like a charm. (opening Passwords)

It doesnt work when a Password Manager meant to autofill to an app is trying to load a password from another Password Manager.

In my IPhone Password and Autofill settings, both Passwords as well as Bitwarden are turned on.

Can someone help?

I dont want to change the way authentication is done (i.e. Change Master Password to say : Face ID/Fingerprint).

I also dont want to reduce the size or complexity of my password to be easier to remember instead of taking from the Passwords app.

I dont want to copy and paste the password directly.

I have turned off Passwords and only have Bitwarden selected in the Auto Fill section and it works as expected.

Could you try that?

@Arjun.Nandakumar Welcome to the forum!

But I’m a bit confused right now… Could you please clarify where the difference is (exactly) to your other post: Bitwarden Password doesnt Autofill From Passwords App on Iphone ?!

Hi Nail , sorry there is no difference.

I’m new to the forums and I just thought I didn’t hit the “Submit” button.

I also didn’t know I could find it under “Pending” . Now I do , thanks. Could you merge/remove the latter.

Thanks for the response, but it seems it was already hidden (unlisted) in the meantime!

Hi Mike , thanks for your reply .

I tried as you said.

But now what happens is when I press and hold the master password in Bitwarden and select autofill , it opens Bitwarden again and prompts it again (loop) because it thinks that since that is my only password manager, it should refer to that .

It doesn’t even read Passwords app anymore which has my master password stored.

Please see the images in order of steps performed

Step 1 : Opened an app (say Twitch) , clicked login and tapped my username . It automatically opened Bitwarden as that is my password manager. I press and hold master password tab and then hit “Autofill”.

Step 2: Then I select “Passwords”.

Step 3: Since I don’t have multiple password managers anymore , it doesn’t prompt me for which manager I want to use unlike earlier , so it directly opens Bitwarden

The problem is my Twitch password is stored in Bitwarden and the master password for Bitwarden is stored in “Passwords” app.

Ideally how I want is when I press autofill > it should give me both options : Bitwarden and “Passwords” and when clicking “Passwords” , it should authenticate my Face ID and then work.

But in my original post , when I had both turned on , it got to the point where it successfully authenticated with my Face ID and then …. nothing happened.

This is not an issue where I directly open the Bitwarden app and autofill, but that defeats the purpose of autofilling when logging into applications (like Gmail, Twitch, etc)

How do I go about (streamline) this ?

Open the bitwarden app with your password, which you get out of passwords. Then you go to the Bitwarden Password Manager and go to settings and select Account Security and set “Unlock with FaceID” then you don’t a password anymore to open Bitwarden.

As you can see in my screenshots I have tried many password managers but nowadays the only one I use on Windows/ mac / iOS is bitwarden and it all plays nice

edit: I must add, I also have stored my master password for bitwarden in Passwords, just in case I lose it. but Passwords (iOS / mac app) is also protected with my login password ./ face id / finger print scan.

Still not working . It seems to be really glitchy . I turn on Face ID in Bitwarden . Once I log out and attempted to login to twitch , it open Bitwarden password manager and prompts me for master password again , not Face authentication.

if I copy and paste password and login , it goes to two step verification and ask for Authenticator code .

Here , sometimes my keyboard doesn’t show up and sometimes it does.

The few times it does and I enter it and login, I see the setting that : The Face ID option is disabled again.

Additionally sometimes my vault also shows empty which is weird because when I open Bitwarden app and login , it does not.

goto settings of your iPhone, then Face ID & Passcode - Enter your Passcode

Check if -Password Autofill is enabled
then click on other apps and see if Bitwarden is enabled there.

@Arjun.Nandakumar

May I ask is your iPhone up to date? iOS version? and are the Bitwarden apps, up to date?

Latest Bitwarden PM version is 2025.9.1 (2605) (settings - about)

Yes I am . I’m on Iphone 14, so I am on IOS version 18.7.1 and Bitwarden 2025.9.1 (2605)

It is enabled in Passwords and Autofill

When you log out from Bitwarden, you also remove the “Face ID” setting by that.

Using Face ID is an unlocking method and can only be done, when you lock the vault. – When you log out on the other hand, then you can’t just unlock with Face ID but must log in again – but Face ID is not a login method, that’s why you get asked for the master password when you log out…

(–> Understand Log In vs. Unlock | Bitwarden)

So, you should make sure that your vault timeout action is set to “lock”. – And if you manually want to “close” the BW app, then tap on “locking” instead of “log out”.

Hi , Thanks for your response .

Personally I prefer logging in with the master password . I don’t want to login with Face ID incase someone is peeking over my phone after I login. (It’s just a personal take)

Is there a way when an App like Twitch opens Bitwarden as a password manager overlay , can i autofill that master password (of Bitwarden) from another app (say Passwords , 1Password, etc.) ?

This doesn’t seem to be working for me . When I press and hold the master password field and press “Autofill” > Password , it checks my Face and a tick mark shows up , and then, nothing happens.

I don’t completely understand the difference, because “after login” you’re logged in…

But anyway, you can’t login with Face ID – Face ID is an unlocking method.

As this is not a Bitwarden function per se you’re asking for, you probably will have more luck in an “Apple Passwords App” forum asking about functions of their app.
