Open in sidebar

Firefox 139.01

Before I begin, I thought nothing happened nothing happens when I tried to use the links for the suggested topics on the right.

Just by chance, I finally stumbled upon this. Don’t you think it should be a lot more obvious, and “minimizing the composer panel” doesn’t really inform you.

That said, Is there now a way to open Bitwarden directly from the toolbar button? I know how to get there from the sidebar button, but that button wants to open in 'Bookmarks" first.

If not, I hope you consider making this available.

Not sure what you mean. Here are the three linked topics, in case you wish to see them:

I don’t understand what you are saying.

Follow the instructions for how to “Pin the Extension” to create a clickable Bitwarden icon at the top of your browser; clicking the icon opens the browser extension.

@bituser was talking about the Discourse interface. Apparently, when you create a new post, a new “composer panel” replaces the bottom part of the window. When you enter the subject, it shows possible matches on the right. But when you click on a link on the right, it changes the partially hidden (in my case) top part of the window, not showing any “feedback” in the “composer panel,” which to some (including myself) looks like the click didn’t do anything.

I guess I never had that problem, since my monitor is in portrait orientation.

Thanks. That’s precisely what I meant. I think this design might confusing for a less experienced user.

Let me try this again.

Is there a simple way to open BItwarden. in the sidebar, directly from the Bitwarden toolbar button? Do I recall incorrectly that there used to be a way to do so?

Or, second choice, is there a way to designate BItwarden as the default result when selecting the sidebar button?

@bituser I’m a bit confused as I don’t exactly understand what you describe… at least a screenshot like this one would be helpful (so that it would be easier to understand about which icon/“location in the browser” you are talking):

I guess, that is your goal, right:

?

If not - what are you trying to accomplish here?

And at last, if it is what I think it is (what you mean), then I think, @grb already provided all possible “help” via the provided links… did you follow those links? Didn’t they help you? – If not, please clarify the mentioned things.

Which part of “directly from the Bitwarden toolbar button” is not understandable? Why are you posting images of the Sidebar button?

All someone had to say was there is no option from/within the Bitwarden toolbar button to open Bitwarden in the sidebar.

Also, there was no response regarding setting Bitwarden as the first option in the drop down menu list to open from the Sidebar button.

“in the sidebar, directly from the Bitwarden toolbar button?” Didn’t make sense to me at first.

Yeah, if I had known what you meant, I might have been able to do so. Sorry.

This didn’t make much sense to me either. (What sidebar button? - BW sidebar button? → I thought, BW already was the “default result” then.)

Probably you meant this then:

?!

I tried to understand what you mean.

You probably already know some or all of these, but just in case:

  1. There is currently no option to open Bitwarden directly in the sidebar from the Bitwarden extension button.
  2. There is a Firefox option to open the sidebar from the toolbar. This was suggested in response to your post 52659, linked by grb above.
  3. There is a related Bitwarden sidebar feature request 71680, also linked by grb above. This feature request doesn’t seem to be gaining traction.
  4. You can set up a keyboard shortcut to open Bitwarden in the sidebar directly (about:addons > Manage Extension Shortcuts).

I used to use the FF sidebar instead of popups via the keyboard shortcut with Biometrics (with Ask for Biometrics on Launch). However, there seems to be a bug in which the sidebar will automatically open on timeout. This bug doesn’t gain any traction either, leaving me with the impression that the sidebar (at least with the mentioned biometrics settings) is somewhat sparsely used. Any feature requests and bugs related to it may not gain much attention, leading me to not use it at all currently.

I personally would advise people to use Bitwarden in the workflows that work. Bugs, especially those not encountered by many people, can persist for a long time. Feature requests are even worse. If these frictions are too much and there is no acceptable workaround for you, maybe it’s time to look for alternatives.

[/quote]I prefer to assume that by mentioning “you”, that’s a general reference to “anyone” who is publicly critical of Bitwarden. Please let me know if I’m mistaken.

In my OP, I made what I believed was a constructive critical observation about website design. I received what I understood, from your previous post, as affirming feedback about that.

The reminder of my inquiry consisted of “Is there now a way to open Bitwarden directly from the toolbar button? I know how to get there from the sidebar button, but that button wants to open in 'Bookmarks” first.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Yes. Click the toolbar icon, which opens the Bitwarden browser extension pop-up.

No.

There you have it.

“You” in this is meant to be you, me, anybody, critical of Bitwarden or not.
