Firefox extension forgets me completely. Why?

The Firefox Bitwarden browser extension sometimes signs out hard - as in loses my sign in status, my password, and my email address. This means it also needs to be fully re-authenticated.

What causes this behavior, and is there a way to predict or preempt it? It happened recently as I was signing in to give a client presentation.

I’m on FF ext 2024.11.2 now, but this has happened for years.

Hi @ndemarco ,

I don’t know what the problem is, but here are some ideas:

The browser extension saves local data that persists across logins, so make sure you don’t have any settings or extensions that clear the browser extension data. One such extension might be “Clear Browsing Data.”

Recently, the Firefox extension started experiencing spontaneous and extensive logout issues, beginning around version 2024.4.1 and continuing until a patch in version 2024.6.3. Since then, there haven’t been consistent complaints about spontaneous logouts.

I personally believe that there are sometimes regressions of bugs related to the information that is supposed to be saved across logins. These bugs need to be reported to Bitwarden for resolution.

There are also more rare spontaneous logouts due to server updates.

If you search for “Firefox logout” on BW Github issues. There are both logout / account information not saved issues still outstanding. If you have extra information and contribute to those bug reports, maybe it’ll get fixed.

If you can keep up and pay attention to Github releases / release announcements, maybe manual updates would be a viable method to achieve stability. I am running FF 2024.6.3 and am not having the issues you described. Also, downgrading FF extension is also easy (at Bitwarden Password Manager version history - 25 versions – Add-ons for Firefox (en-US)).

It’s not extensions - I have few, and none clear data, at least overtly.

I will follow the GH issues, and see if I can contribute anything to help solve. The workaround is easy, but it can be jarring - like being locked out of your house/car.
