Feature name
- Context menu option to autofill verification codes
Feature function
- Reduce clicks, no need to right-click, go through context menus to copy verification code then right-click/ctrl-v pasting into the field.
- Speed and ease of use
Hey Brenden, thanks for the feature request, if you’re interested in using keyboard shortcuts, you can also do the following:
If a login uses the Bitwarden Authenticator for TOTPs, using the
Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L
will automatically copy your TOTP to your clipboard after auto-filling. All you have to do isCmd/Ctrl + V
to paste!
The feature you have requested is already implemented, @zenren - just right-click and select Paste
.
Boy, it really took me a minute to figure out what you meant. I had no idea it would overwrite the clipboard with the current TOTP code when you chose to autofill the username and password.
This does not work correctly if the website keeps you logged in, but only asks for a verification TOTP code. I have a forum I visit that requires reauthentication every 30 days. I have to manually copy/paste it.
I don’t think we can consider them the same feature: it involves an extra “Paste” operation, and additionally it modifies the clipboard (not always desired). @southerndoc also mentioned another very valid situation in which the option to auto-fill would be better.
Even though it’s a pretty small detail, I find this an important quality-of-life improvement.
This seems similar to other requests, especially Add context menu option to autofill TOTP/verification codes. However, there seems to have been no traction in that request for a feature that (at least from the non-programmer’s perspective) doesn’t seem like an extremely difficult feature to incorporate.
Please add the ability to fill / autofill the TOTP field.
@jschlie A somewhat late “Welcome to the forum!”
I merged your request with this existing one to the same topic.
Thanks for the reply. I had honesty forgotten that I wrote that post. Still hoping for TOTP autofill.
You do know that there is TOTP autofill via the inline autofill menu available since a few months? (you have to Enable the inline autofill menu for that)
I use the inline autofill constantly while logging into 365, Entra, and Intune portals and I have never once seen an inline TOTP selection.
Is there some trick to getting it to work with Microsoft admin/user logins?
Thanks!
I have that problem a lot.
Try this. When you’re in the window, click the BW extension in the top right corner. Then simply click the TOTP field again. Does the menu open?
Given that you have enabled the inline autofill menu, stored the TOTP seed codes for the respective login items, and not a free BW account (as only “paid” accounts have the function of the integrated authenticator), the TOTP autofill menu should show up by itself…
But the TOTP field detection doesn’t work on 100% of all websites.
(BTW, those autofill issues can always be reported:
Report autofill issues (mobile apps): https://forms.gle/NcZ2BmLfKH9txCzz8
Report autofill issues (other clients): https://forms.gle/yYVQkepxxLKZ3kR6A)
I’ve already reported a few things there. Nothing has been improved so far. Maybe other optimizations take priority.
