I see this was a requested feature and some people actually think it’s a good idea. I disagree. If I’m not using Bitwarden I don’t want to do anything. If I want to add a login I will open Bitwarden. The current implementation is abysmal and annoying beyond belief. Even if this were a good idea (and it’s not) it’s been implemented in a way that’s confusing and disruptive. I was told months ago that this problem would be addressed in “the next update” and it persists. Again, this is an unnecessary feature which has been poorly implemented. If you’re married to this idea then please at least have the decency to provide an easy to find and effective way to disable it. Disabling login notifications altogether is not an appropriate or acceptable alternative.
tldr version: I want to be able to disable the notification to unlock the vault and add login when the vault is locked. This is a high priority to me as it is an incredibly annoying intrusion.
When not logged in, Bitwarden still prompts to save passwords, which seems counter-intuitive. This used to confuse me because it’s almost always a site that I already know is saved. Because the browser also has login storage, I don’t often need to log into Bitwarden immediately.
To sum up: I assert that Bitwarden should wait to be logged in before issuing any prompts.
Welcome to the forum, @billTheTailor!
Well, it used to work the way that you want it to, but in response to a popular feature request to have Bitwarden ask to save passwords even when locked, the current functionality was implemented in 2021.
Regardless, you should disable the browser’s native password manager function, as it may have security vulnerabilities and can interfere with the proper functioning of the Bitwarden browser extension.
Bitwarden asks to save passwords even when it is locked or logged out. It’s annoying and currently the only way to disable is to disable the Ask globally.
There really should be a way to optionally disable this function when the vault is not logged in or unlocked. Literally just want the ability to make a previous related feature request optional instead of forced.
@pozzeur Welcome to the forum!
You also have a second option. If you want to disable this behavior for a specific site, you can add the site’s domain name (FQDN, including base domain and subdomains) to the Excluded Domains list in the browser extension Settings.
Except that stops it from asking from saving logins for those domains always. I want it to only ask if it is unlocked and never ask if it is locked, regardless of the domain.
Thank you for clarifying your feature request.
There is no need to make it bad for the support again or go against everyone initially voting for it.
Just make it more refined. Give the user the option to disable the question in locked state if he/she wants to.
Leave the default after install as it is currently implemented to keep support calls low. However if the user goes in there and changes it then the user won´t call the support that it doesn´t work if he/she set it up by themselves.
Here it is prompting me to unlock to save at the BitWarden site! And more often than not, the pop-up blocks a button or another field to which I need to gain access to complete and move forward!
This is madness!
@NetworkGuy That screenshot looks like you’re using a tablet or iPad. If you’re using the browser extension there – instead of the mobile app – then that usage is not supported by Bitwarden, and you might have a better experience with using the mobile app, as intended.
BTW, just as a general reminder: who doesn’t want to see those prompts at all… you can deactivate it in Settings → Notifications by unchecking one or both of those two options:
Okay, that’s a good point. I use Firefox for my browser and have both the BitWarden android app and Firefox extension installed. For clarity, I use an Android Pixel 8 Pro phone.
Maybe this configuration is not recommended?
These screen shots show the BitWarden and Firefox apps installed, and the second one shows an attempt to sign in to this forum and the BitWarden prompt within the Firefox app.
Thank you for the suggestion to disable settings within the BitWarden app. My read above implied that there were no BitWarden options to stop the behavior, but could be my misunderstanding of the optimal configuration.
For what purpose did you install both? – The mobile app should suffice on Android.
As written before, to use the browser extension on mobile browsers is not supported by Bitwarden (Password Manager FAQs | Bitwarden) and the popup from your first screenshot is created by the browser extension. If you would deinstall it, your problem would be gone.
The inline autofill suggestion there is created by the BW mobile app – not by the Browser extension.
Here again if you don’t believe me:
The simplest solution is to disable the prompts (for all websites) by unchecking the options “Ask to add login” and “Ask to update existing login” Under Settings > Notifications in the browser extension (as shown in the screenshot posted by @Nail1684 above).
Yes, this is the most frustrating thing I find with BitWarden. Please give us the option to not see this insidious message when the BW vault or extension is not active! Why is this so difficult to implement?
As explained earlier in this thread, it is not difficult to implement, but there was a deliberate decision made in 2021 to make the save/update prompts active also when the vault is locked (this was in response to popular demand).
You do have the option to disable this behavior on specific websites by adding those domains to the Excluded Domains list, or you can fully disable the prompts for saving new logins and/or the prompts for updating new logins.
FYI, the feature request to enable the save/update prompts for locked vaults had 10 times as many votes as the current request (to disable the prompts), so this feature request will likely need significant community support before there can be any movement on considering development.
