Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0)

As with many people on this thread, I signed up just to post on the new UX. The new extension is such a downgrade from the old one.

Ideally, we have the option to revert to the old UI but if not, then it’d be great to just have options to:

  1. Change the behaviour to Fill by default, as this is the default action 90% of the time. The new “Fill” button is so hard to click.

  2. Don’t show all items by default, it’s so cluttered and as many have mentioned it could be a security issue.

I can live with all the other choices, but really wish I could just revert to v2024.11.2.

This is a good point. The buttons below the search bar in effect are filters. It seems to me that this might be an intentional (???) stepping stone towards converting folders into bona fide tags (a popular feature request that Bitwarden has been researching since 2022). The only additional changes required would be to allow items to be associated with more than one “folder”/tag, and perhaps the ability to filter by more than one tag at a time.

I disagree with 1. The best improvement with 12.X is that it does not fill when clicking it. It consistently opens the view option when you click it, and you don’t have to wonder where to click if you want to view it.

If I want something to be filled, that is what the autofill function and / or the BW autofill icon is for. People were mentioning some kind of keyboard shortcuts for this, before the autofill icon was introduced as an alternative option (I’ve never used it, but it is supposed to be there).

If these these two options are not working, then:

  • autofill might be glitching / not compatible with the website, but this does not happen that often, so I can live with clicking “small” fill icon. And it is not that small, I never had issues clicking it.
  • Something is wrong with the URL entry in the Login item, so I need to fix it and it starts working

Unless one of these cases happens, I don’t even need to use the extension icon to fill a password.

Now as an option to switch this (from view to fill), I wouldn’t be against it. Having more options is always great and not everyone’s workflows are the same. But I myself need it to work how it is working now.

I guess at this point I’d add that I wished not everything would just be called “auto-fill”… Thinking of the perceived consistency again, if the “auto-fill” for login items without at least one matching URI would be called something else - maybe “forced-fill” or whatever - the inconsistency would be reduced. (and then I would be perfectly fine with the function being hidden behind the hamburger menu… but the same name for different functions - auto-filling on the corresponding site v. “force-filling” on any given site -, though similar effect, is alone a bit unfortunate).

I don’t enable Autofill on form fields so this update “broke” my workflow and years of muscle memory. I agree that having the option to toggle between View or Fill would be good for everyone.

I agree, and since they are already using the variant “Fill” in two locations (buttons and kebab menu option “Fill and Save”), this would be an opportune moment to retire the word “autofill” (or to use it only for denoting “fill on page load”).

The forced autofill function could be called Force Fill, or just Fill !!!.

Website icons are different sizes in the new update, it messes with login names as they are not lined up perfectly. This needs to updated, for now I have turned off all website icons.

New Search Sorting Makes Finding Websites Difficult

The presentation of search results in the new UI is significantly different from the old behavior, in that “Autofill Suggestions” and Favorites are prioritized over all other search results. This may be a welcome change for the 5 users who voted for the feature request “Search Within Current URI”, or for anybody who is searching for a specific account among a large number of accounts for the same website.

However, there is a reasonably large subset of Bitwarden users who use the browser extension as a bookmark manager, for whom the Search functionality is now significantly degraded. Previously, one could enter a partial search term (3-4 characters) until the desired item was visible in the search list, then click the Launch button.

For these users, false-positive search matches among the “Autofill Suggestions” and Favorites can now push down the “All Items” search results off the page, so that scrolling (or a much larger number of characters added to the search term) is required to find the relevant search result. It should be noted that when using the Search tool as a bookmark manager, the “Autofill Sugggestions” are never relevant, because the user’s intent is to launch a different website than the matching site.

Here is an example of how the most relevant search result has been pushed off the page by irrelevant items in the “Autofill Suggestions” and Favorites sections:

It seems that the new behavior will be beneficial only to a niche subset of users (MSPs, developers, etc.) who may have large numbers of accounts matching the same website, and then use the search function to find a specific login account for the currently loaded website. Therefore, I would suggest that the new search behavior should be an option that such users can enable, not a fixed behavior that is imposed on users who do not need it.

In fact, there could be a user-selectable option for how to sort search results:

  • Alphabetical sorting.
  • By most recently used.
  • Okapi BM25 (Lunr’s default sort order).
  • Prioritize autofill suggestions and favorites.

Friendly neighborhood UI/UX designer here, and I’m glad to see the copy buttons are back! However, I dislike the unattractive fill button next to the nice icons, so I wanted to create a quick mock-up of what a “fill” icon could look like in its place.

11 posts were split to a new topic: Missing delete button for organization items

Though I think this is a good inspiration - and I personally could live with such a symbol -, I guess the most part of the feedback was/is, that the current “Fill” button is already too small.

To toggle (another Setting in Appearance?!) between the “old inconsistency” (Fill with clicking the item) and a button or even a smaller symbol for auto-fill and no inconsistency with clicking the item, is an idea I would like. (though my preference for the “default” would be the new consistent clicking-behaviour, but everyone who wants the old way back, would be able to do that with such a toggle setting)

Some thoughts to the question of “showing all vault items” / filtering etc.:

Something like a private mode (or public mode - depending from which perspective you phrase it) for the complete extension would be an interesting idea.

With my desktop at home I have no problem with my vault etc. showing up. With my laptop in public places, it is a whole different situation.

A private mode (= keeping things private) or public mode (= being in public) could be also a setting, to keep as most things private as possible for the whole extension. Just a first thought on that

  • beginning with blurring the used email on the login/unlock screen
  • not showing any vault items and suggestions in the “vault tab”
  • blurring e.g. the username (as it is often the email address that makes the most sense to me) in view/edit mode for vault items
  • hide the “notes” sections of entries in view/edit mode (and of course being able to toggle between show/hide)
  • of course there might arise the problem, if you still can identify / differentiate your own items for auto-fill etc. (maybe one has to compensate for that in the title of some entries… or maybe there are other solutions to that?)
  • … (and other things I didn’t think of right now)

Bit of a palaver… just go back to only show the ones relevant to the website …like it was…SIMPLE.

Just swap edit and fill…like it was… SIMPLE ?!

And why if you’ve set up a password are they called suggestions ?!

I agree. Personally, I like for it to show items that are not in a folder.

If I’m not presented when i go in to my vault of the items that are not in a folder then I’m never going to put them in to a folder.

Plus for consistency, it should be showing items not in a folder because that is what the iOS app does. Not sure about the android app.

I’m sorry to have to agree, there are So many things wrong with something that didn’t need fixing. So much lost screen space now, ordering of the lists is all over the place, I couldn’t even find the card I needed to pay with (that was a first), using the right-click fill on a webpage usually means I am quicker than bitwarden now, etc etc
I’ve been a long-term paid user but I’m honestly reconsidering this now.

Get the Android version up to a usable speed rather than this.

I came here to post these two exact requests - I can live with the rest of the changes (now that the copy icons are back), but these two are the most important to me.

literally created an account here because of how bad this is.

The removal of quick single click access to U/P/TOTP is bad. Bring it back - I have multiple websites with multiple logins - clicking once to get the TOTP was great. Having to click now three times is unacceptable.

To edit an entry requires multiple clicks. The old way and the android app way (… - Edit) are better.

Remove the list of all vault from first page (at least hide it behind a collapsible list).

The general feel of the extension is too big - even in compact mode. I like having easy and quick access to what I need.

One positive - it’s easy to add a new item to a collection now.

It’s been back for a few days now, see here: Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) - #107 by FaviFake

This is very poor UX. It should be the same as the old version, where the fill process is triggered by clicking on the item, not a button! You changed the behavior and replaced the edit button with the small fill button. This is not correct at all.
