This is demonstrably not true. Compared to the old design (pre-“modernization”), the new “compact” mode has significantly lower information density in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions:
- At least 25% less information in the vertical dimension (it’s 25% less if filters are hidden; up to 50% less information shown if filters are visible).
- 30% less information in the horizontal dimension
- 20% fewer password characters visible on the unlock/login screen
Overall (on a per-area basis), the amount of information visible in the “new” compact mode is at best only 50% of what we used to be able to see.
The option to select a “wide” viewport may be an acceptable work-around for some users, but to be clear, making the extension viewport wider does not make it more “space efficient”, it just blocks a larger area of the underlying webpage — in addition, the width options do nothing to mitigate the increased need for scrolling resulting from the poor information density in the vertical dimensions.
