Remembering looked-up info for a short time

In 1Password’s browser extension (which I have to use for work), I can look up a login, and when I have to copy/paste that into a different place, the info I looked up will remain available in that extension for a short while. This way I can re-open the extension to copy the password immediately, because that’s still available.

If I now have to log in to e.g. paypal, using Bitwarden, the automatic fill option will bugger that up, due to some hidden token on the new window. So I look up Paypal in the extension, copy my name, click NEXT. I go back to opening the extension, I look up Paypal, copy the password, click Next. I go back to opening the extension, I look up Paypal for the third time, copy the MFA code, click Login.
Maybe you see what I’m referring to. 1 log-in requires looking up the same credentials info 2 or 3 times. Remembering those last search results inside the extension for about 5 to 10 seconds (like 1password does), would make the experience a lot smoother.

I hope this makes some sense, writing down the idea is a bit cumbersome.

@PaulKater Welcome to the forum!

Why do you have to “look up Paypal in the extension” (even once, much less three times)? If your URL and URI match detection is set up properly, Bitwarden should automatically pull up the vault item for the page that you are on.

Entirely correct, @grb
But there are websites that pop up a separate, headless window for Paypal (sorry, forgot to add that in the original post). Such windows don’t show the extension icon, so there are only 2 ways to fill in the login info:

  1. Keep the bitwarden application open all day long
  2. Switch back to the main browser window, open the extension and look up paypal 3 times.
Oh, there is a third way, I suddenly realise.
  3. Open a new tab in the main browser, go to paypal.com and then use the info the extension serves up. That is less cumbersome than option 2.

In the headless window, what happens if you use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+L to auto-fill? Alternatively, if you right-click in the headless window, do you see a Bitwarden entry in the context menu — in which case, is it possible to auto-fill using Bitwarden > Auto-fill login > Paypal?

If neither of the above suggestions work, you could also open the browser extension in the main browser window, use the “pop-out” button in the upper left corner to create an extension window that stays open, and search for the Paypal credentials there. Then you can go back and forth without having to re-open the extension or re-type the search.

I have tried the autofill shortcut in such a window, but that seems to influence some hidden code/attribute in that window, which then keeps telling me the input is incorrect.

But! Can you believe I have never noticed that pop-out button??? :flushed:
That’s fabulous and works, and this makes my whole question unnecessary. Still I’m glad I asked, because otherwise I would never have learnt about the pop-out.

Thank you for this!

You’re welcome!

Just out of curiosity, does the right-click context menu work, or does it result in the same issue as the keyboard shortcut?

For now I’ll have to assume the right-click option also works, because that only fills the selected entry. I don’t have any waiting paypal payments, but I’ll give that a check once one comes up, and I’ll let you know.

Hi @grb

This morning I had the opportunity to check, and yes, the right-click menu works fine when filling out the paypal popup.

That’s good news. Did you happen to check first whether the keyboard shortcut was still not auto-filling? If so, you may want to submit a report using Bitwarden’s Auto-fill Failure Reporting Form.

Although it seems that you have now at least two methods to deal with the issue you were facing, I also want to draw your attention to the following two Feature Requests:

I am moving your current thread into the Ask the Community section of the forum, which should give you your vote back (allowing you to apply it to one of the existing feature requests), since you were dealing with a specific issue and we found some solutions for you.

Oh, the autofill ctrl shift L worked from the start. But that created the problem, as that influenced some hidden control on the input screen.
Thank you also for those 2 feature requests!
