Possibility to hide passwords in browser extension

Hi,

Just installed bitwarden for personal use (free), moving away from using chrome password manager.
In chrome, I am unable to view my stored passwords without providing some sort of login (windows login).

In the bitwarden extension, I’m able to see all the passwords without anything similar. Am I doing something wrong, or is this feature only in the paid versions?
Surely it’s not a non-existing feature, as I would personally call it essential.

@Martin_Andersson Welcome to the forum!

In the browser extension, click your profile avatar (colored circle with your initials) in the upper right corner, then click any of the options at the bottom:

Can you still see any passwords?

:warning: IMPORTANT: Do not try the above unless you are certain that you know your Bitwarden username, master password, and two-step login recovery code (if you have set up 2FA for your Bitwarden account), as well as the server where your Bitwarden account is hosted (bitwarden.com or bitwarden.eu).

If your BW vault is unlocked, you can open an entry and view the password without additional authentication, except when you use the “Master password re-prompt” feature. This is the same on both paid/unpaid versions.

If you lock your vault quickly and consistently, this might not be a problem. If you leave your vault unlocked all the time, consistently locking the computer is probably a good thing.

Hi,

Thanks for your answers.

The “master password re-prompt” was what I was looking for.

Best regards
Martin

Glad that you found a solution that works for you. However, you should be aware that your vault contents are not considered to be secure when your browser extension is left unlocked, even if you have enabled “master password reprompt” for all items in your vault.

While the extension is unlocked, all of your decrypted passwords are stored in the computer’s memory; therefore, any malware that is introduced onto your computer can easily read all of the un-encrypted vault contents, and any individual with physical access to your computer (while it is unlocked) can also extract the vault contents from the computer memory. Therefore, if your vault contains any sensitive information, it is recommended to always keep your Bitwarden browser extension locked when not actively being used.
