Firefox: BW extension 2025.11.1 not prompting for passkeys on any site

As the subject line says.

Sites stopped prompting me after the extension was updated automatically to 2025.11.1, although this morning I was using them fine. I assume before the update. I know the extension updated because I had to unlock my vault again (had not closed the browser).

I tried disabling and re-enabling the extension, and checked for ‘Ask to save and use Passkeys’ as well as toggling it. ALL sites I tried will no longer prompt to use my passkey, instead they revert to Windows passkey solution or ‘usb key’.

Seems to have been that last extension update the broke this or am I the only one?

Best,

Abel

I have the same issue. It happens when my firefox upgraded to 145.0.2. Firefox seems to hijack passkey and not passing it to Bitwarden. I am looking for solutions.

Thanks everyone, we’re looking into it!

This is a documented bug (although one the Bitwarden staff have not yet acknowledged as reproducible):

Hello everyone, I have a problem with logging in using passkeys. I had no issues all week, and suddenly a window appears asking me to retrieve the passkeys via USB or mobile. I am using Windows 11 LTSC (24H2 OS Build 26100.7171), which doesn’t have Hello, and LibreWolf (version 145.0.1-2) with the Bitwarden (2025.11.1) extension. Is there a way for me to log in, as the classic username/password method doesn’t allow me either, due to passkeys being enabled?

The best option for those experiencing this may be to use the following link to downgrade the Firefox extension to version 2025.11.0:

Next, right-click the Bitwarden extension icon, select “Manage Extension” from the context menu, and set the option “Allow automatic updates” to Off.

Don’t forget to reset “Allow automatic updates” to On after this bug has been fixed.

I’ve already downgraded to version 2025.11.0, and it works fine now. I’ll check when this bug is fixed, and then I’ll enable auto-update again. Thanks again for the solution. If there’s anything else I can do to help, feel free to ask.

Same for me, passkeys not working in Firefox on windows 11 as of today. A fix is needed! Thanks

Same happening for me on Firefox 145.0.2 on Linux.

How does bitwarden break something important like passkeys.

This has also cropped up for me… I’ve seen it on Windows 10, 11 & Xubuntu in 2 versions of Firefox! Also on AMD & Intel CPUs.

I did the correct thing for someone from the late naughties to do, I tweeted about it! TBH, I hadn’t even found the BW Community before now, it’s been that reliable!

Hi,

I have been using the Bitwarden extension in Firefox for passkeys sign ins without issue until I refreshed Firefox today.

Now, I am only getting the Windows Security pop up rather than the Bitwarden pop up when attempting to sign in with a passkey.

Some details:

  • Firefox and the Bitwarden extension are both up to date.
  • My Vault is unlocked.
  • The passkeys option under Notification is ticked.
  • The Excluded domain list is empty.
  • I tried multiple website for which I have a passkey, some behavior.
  • I have tried to purge all Cookies and Website data, no improvement.

Any idea, what else I could be trying?

Thanks in advance for any tips, help.

Hello @xxxarmitagexxx and welcome to the community :waving_hand:

I moved your thread into a relevant topic. Please see the mod notice at the top.

Short notice: I updated the title from Sites not prompting for Passkey: Firefox 145.0.2; Bitwarden 2025.11.1 to Firefox: BW extension 2025.11.1 not prompting for passkeys on any site. (as 1. the sites are still prompting for passkeys, but the BW extension doesn’t intercept it and 2. the Firefox version doesn’t seem to be the deciding factor…)

I also changed the tag from os:windows to os:all, as it’s also happening on MacOS and Linux.

Reporting in that it is also occurring on Fedora Linux 43 Workstation…

world-main-breaks-passkeys… do we need to worry about something else here as well?

@dnwk @lionslair50 @aibohphobia @xxxarmitagexxx @JediMasterCK Welcome to the Bitwarden user community forum, though we would have preferred to meet you under more favorable circumstances!

As @Nail1684 already noted, a fix for this bug is already in the works. In the meantime, you can use the instructions above to restore passkey functionality in your Firefox extension.

A post was split to a new topic: Passkeys not working in Edge

I joined here to thank you. I was about to lose my mind. I’ve been trying to fix it for hours. I’m also using BetterFox Firefox 144.0, which I blocked from updating. I deleted and reinstalled the browser, profile, and other extensions countless times, but it didn’t work. Then I saw this and downgraded the version, and it worked. Thank you so much.
