It’s now 2025. This thread started in 2018. This is core functionality, people!
7 years is really too long! Hopefully I’ve seen a PR today, hopefully it is to solve that issue ? ![]()
The PR that you linked has nothing to do with Autotype. However, there are other PRs that indicate Autotype is actively being developed. I have recently made a prognosis SWAG that the Autotype feature may become available for Premium users by the end of the year.
Does this mean it won’t work for people have self-hosted? Will it eventually be made available for people who are not premium or running their own or something or do I need to look for another password manager?
Self-hosted users can still license Premium features. In the past, there have sometimes been delays before a new feature was rolled out to self-hosted users, but other than that, I see no reason why Autotype wouldn’t (eventually) be available for self-hosted users.
If I see it correctly, this is by far the most voted feature and still after that many years not implemented. I’ve looked into some other ‘comparable’ products and they also don’t have this feature far.
It seems that a lot of different feature requests were merged together here that maybe should have stayed separate.
For example is there an update or any plans to get Bitwarden added to the native MacOS Autofill API?
Firefox Passkey notifications are broken (for me) and if it was just integrated into the system we wouldn’t have this problem.
I did not see these suggestions when I searched. Sorry if I missed something already posted.
I would like to be able to autofill applications that require a login, LinkedIn and Discord desktop apps are a good example.
@cbaytech Welcome to the forum! I’ve moved your post into this existing feature request thread on the same topic. FYI, this feature is under active development, and will be available for Premium users when released.
Thank you GRB. I did look before I posted but did not see the one you merged with. Glad it is actively being worked. Guess I don’t need to vote on it then.
I will figure out the best way to search and hopefully support what is already there or create only if nothing exists for it.=For, instance, I am looking to see if a suggestion for auto fill of banking info like routing number and account number is in the works. Most governmental sites offed eCheck payments. I’ve also seen on some commercial sites as well.

You’ll need to spend a little more time on the forum before you are able to vote (when your forum “trust level” advances from new user to basic user).
Mods don’t mind merging redundant feature requests, but yes, spending some time to search for relevant topics may be helpful.
You can already do this using the existing custom field feature, but it must be configured manually for each site. If you would like assistance with this for a particular website, please post a link to the online form (you may want to start a new Ask the Community topic for this, though).
Alternatively, you may wish to support one or both of the following feature requests, which would bring more automation to the process:
Thanks! Have a good week ahead.

I got tired of waiting for the macOS autofill integration and switched to Strongbox. ![]()
I am still waiting for this feature before I can propose using Bitwarden in my company.
I am overwhelmed. I started browsing the web in the 90s, and I’m simply overwhelmed by the sheer level of enshittification we’re seeing nowadays. Lots of ads, fake information created with crappy LLMs and it seems that we’re now back to installing plugins for everything.
Anyone remember Microsoft Internet Explorer ActiveX? All major Operating Systems now have autofill APIs, in fact, Bitwarden makes use of iOS 26 native Autofill for its main purpose - to save and fill saved logins. But on macOS, I can’t do that. It only works on supported browsers and I have to install a Bitwarden extension.
So even though I may have save login info for a subscription-based application, such as basically all of them nowadays like Spotify or AutoDesk, or Adobe stuff, well, I have to open the Bitwarden app and archaically copy/paste the login info manually. But if Bitwarden corp would implement autofill based on macOS API, then I wouldn’t have to do that.
I want to change browser from Safari, so not only do I have to download my preferred browser, I also have to use its webstore to download “extension” from Bitwarden to make it fill logins. It just SUCKS! I know, developers are so scarce /sarcasm… And their time is limited by god know what roadmaps. Isn’t your product support to work as a password manager!? Then the priority should be to make it as easy as possible. Making us install an extra addon on EVERY SINGLE BROWSER WE USE is →NOT← easy! I have searched this forum. And there are requests for this going back TWO YEARS. How many years does it need to finally deliver this feature? You’ve done it on iOS, so what’s stopping your company from doing it on macOS? And why are you making it so ridiculously bureaucratic by trying to “merge” all systems into one issue?
I could care less if you give autofill to Windows users when I don’t use Windows. Focus on one platform at a time!? You clearly have no issues with that, since you’ve delivered this feature on iOS but left desktop OSs in the dust. But guess what, I can’t do everything on a mobile screen. It can’t beat my 57” curved super ultrawide Samsung monitor…. It can’t beat a mouse and a keyboard, and it can’t beat PROPER windowed multitasking. It feels so, so ridiculous that the ONE application (hint: yours) supposed to give me more convenience by holding all my credentials in one, is actually the one that makes me do manual work by copying/pasting stuff unless I install some damned extension that makes me click 500 things to authorize it. When you could just enable your desktop app with the proper APIs and then the OS can make use of my logins globally, without cumbersome extensions or extra steps.
Your business convinced me to migrate from your competitors 1Password. How about you now keep up with development on macOS and deliver features that should’ve already been here at least 3 years ago? It’s not much to ask, it’s not entitlement and it’s not rude of me to speak like this.
It’s frustrating to be lured into an ecosystem as complex and time consuming as password managers are, only to have our needs abandoned. I bet your company is going to invest in some weird AI before it gets the basics right first.
Apple menu > System Settings > General > Autofill & Passwords:
Bitwarden should be a choice there. It’s not. That’s a problem, and it’s a big one right now.
/rant over
I’ve certainly posted my share of rants like this… Without piling on to the frustration–I would also very much like to see this implemented. Please and thank you, Bitwarden team.
Hey all, this is on the the team is currently working on support for desktop autotype & native passkeys (see roadmap), thanks for your patience!
The roadmap only mentions Windows and macOS. Will there be support for Linux later?
