Default ownership and default collection/folder when creating new vault item

Agree with everyone else, this is the one feature preventing me from having a seamless experience with Organizations.

As a newly paying customer of a Bitwarden Family plan, this feature is critical for proper Collection adoption. I have created collections for my Wife, Daughter, Son, Myself, and Shared with permissions appropriate to my 4 Member Accounts.

Each Account should be able to set the default Org+Collection that will be preselected when creating a new item.

Without this feature, it takes 4* interactions before a new item can be properly saved into a collection! (*On Mobile, click Org dropdown, click Org, Scroll down, Click Collection).

Please consider completing this request, its my #1 gripe as a long time paying customer

Started using bitwarden 5years ago. Got my wife using it using a shared vault. Due to this missing feature she just started logging in with my account. Now enforced MFA is coming (about time really from a security perspective) looking at shared vaults again and this is still an issue! Need to get my kids into a password manager now but I can’t justify paying fro something that effectively won’t be used without this feature :pensive:. Please prioritise.

I see in the past it almost was released so guessing it was blocked on some principle around automatically sharing passwords being bad practice. Counter to that, It’s not automatic sharing because the policies on folders determine who has access.

So for my kids I’d want a single vault and then everyone gets their own collection that only they have access and that is set to the default.

Also interested in this feature.

This is a big enough issue for me that i will begin looking for other options. always having to move stuff to organization is painful

I’ve been using BW as an individual for 3 months and it’s a bit clunky for my un technical wife, but she asked me to set up today so I subscribed to a family plan to set up.

I got everything set up between my wife and I, but then found this issue and it totally negates the concept of shared access if the usability is so poor. Let alone adding my son as he will never share sites / passwords and therefore is not suitable for families.

The fact that @bw-admin has not commented on this thread in TWO YEARS means that this is pretty much dead and not worth me continuing my subscription.

It’s such a shame as Enterprise customers can remove the Individual Vault already.

FYI, @bw-admin is not an actual user, it is a distribution list that sends notifications to the forum admins.

The April 2023 comment attributed to @bw-admin may have been made by Bitwarden staff member @dwbit shortly before they left Bitwarden (at which point all of their forum posts had the attribution changed to @bw-admin). For the record, @dwbit returned to Bitwarden about 6 months ago and is now active on the forum again.

Thanks for the information.

That being said the comment April 2023 seems to be the last from any Bit Warden staff member so the feature request seems to be well down the list and therefore the product remains not well set for families with very little prospect that it will be resolved.

Of course you could pay for a family of 4 $288 a year for Enterprise…

Or use the Guest Account functionality of a competitor.

Any updates on this?

As a previous 1Password user, I would love to see this feature in Bitwarden as well.

Still no updates on this? :slightly_frowning_face:

I would like to strongly recommend that this issue be given some official attention. I just signed up for a Families plan after years of satisfied personal use, and was looking forward to finally financially supporting this great product. I can only speak for myself, but I imagine I am not the only person here who is the technical person in their family, trying to help their less-technical family members with good password management. I know it will be basically impossible to get them to remember to add passwords to a shared collection by doing it manually.

From a product design perspective, I humbly request that you consider whether the lack of this option is meeting the needs of your intended users. A user interface should aim to make the best or most desirable option, the easiest one to choose.

Thankfully, I’ve discovered this during the free trial period. I am glad that other users in this thread have mentioned other paid services that have such a feature. The current Families plan does not meet my needs without this feature, and I would find it hard to recommend to others.

Can only agree with that. That was nice to set up with 1Password and is sadly missing in Bitwarden.

Someone here has already given it some thought.

I just came to BW from Keeper. How can this get implemented? Kind of a silly thing to lack.

I want my stuff to go into my collection ( since a collection is essentially a folder). My collection is shared with my wife and her stuff should go into her collection which is shared with me.

Evwn an option in the app to set a personal ‘default’ would fix this issue.

Yet another frustrated paying customer, Family Plan, looking for the easy option where i don’t have to educate my family members how to save new items to a Collection in an Organisation. Even if I do the education, they will forget. Surely this feature is worthy of development time for all the posters in this thread who want something to fix this pain?

Aaand two years later, still nothing. Very disappointing. We’ve just upgrade to the family plan to discover this missing feature. Super frustrating, so guess we go back to a shared account again. Can’t recommend BW for families because of this.

@Boland Welcome to the forum!

Just FYI: account sharing is not in agreement with Bitwarden’s Terms of Service.

@Nail1684 Your being a moderator suggests you might have access to someone at BitWarden. True? Can you please ask for an official response to this question? It’s one thing to be told it’s low on the priority list. It’s something else to get no response at all.

Volunteer moderators of this community forum do not have any privileged access to Bitwarden employees.

To get a response from Bitwarden, the most straightforward method is to contact Customer Support using the Help Center contact form.

Do BW employees typically monitor the community forums, or do they consider that the realm of customers and volunteers?
