As other have suggested here, setting the match detection to “never” would exclude them from the search results.
You might check out mike808’s comment he does a good job of capturing the various workarouds for keeping obsolete entries in your vault with the least pain:
Here is a work around.
-
Create a team collection called Archived Items
-
Move all old account to Archived Items collection
-
Goto team member’s page, click user and remove permission of Archived Items for youself, then the Archived Items collection has no manager and no one can see items in it.
-
If you want to archive some item, temporarily give youself permissions to manage Archived Items collection. Then remove your permission.

Ugh this is a good workaround but I do hate it lol. Thanks for this, it’s exactly what will clear my clutter.
I know BW stores previous passwords, does it store deleted items?
deleted items only for 30 days, otherwise that would be a great workaround
It almost seems easier to print them out or just move to another password manager that has an archive function. This has now received 400+ votes and no convenient solution in sight
I agree with you… Paid Customer here, thinking of moving to another password manager just for this… Bitwarden should listen to their customers!!
I don’t want to delete things, just in case. Or, at the very least, remove it from the dropdown.
Could an archive option be added?
@mooktakim Welcome to the forum!
I moved your post into an existing feature request that is proposing the same thing. To support this feature request, established forum users can scroll to the top of the thread and click the Vote button.
In the meantime, I would suggest reading through the thread, as several users have posted comments with work-around ideas. Here are a few:
The lack of feedback from the developers in this case is really frustrating.
Especially since out of my point of view it should be not too hard to add an additional property “archived” to the existing data and make the view etc. “without ‘archived’” by default and add a checkbox to show archived items as well.
And as far as I have been able to see there is no “really good” workaround and all workarounds need (too much) “clickwork”.
I would be happy to add some bucks to a “bounty” for this feature.
I’ve followed this thread for years and this is probably the only feature that I really want left. The suggested workarounds either are too tedious or too hacky that it really makes me not want to do it.
I use the “uri/never” and the “zzArchive” solutions for now but it would really be nice to finally have a clean way to do this.
How many votes does it usually take for the dev team to take notice? Was the the PR from @gsdstr ever reviewed?
Archiving would be a great feature. I have a number of accounts I don’t use but don’t want to lose in case there’s a need to access something historical that’s stored. I appreciate people offering work arounds but a feature that enables you to archive accounts so they don’t appear in search but have a separate archive location would be ideal. Another nice feature would be to have hidden accounts that again don’t appear in search but can be accessed for eh… research sites?
I’ve been using BitWarden for years now, and I have wanted this feature since day 1. I really hope it happens some day… my vault is now way too big, but I also don’t want to completely delete entries, I just want to remove them from being included in the default search.
Really hope this comes to BitWarden soon. The demand is clearly there.
Right, this is exactly my use case. I have thousands of entries and would like to declutter this more easily than removing the url matching, and excluding them from default search. I still haven’t seen a good reason not to do this, as @shivy says: the demand is clearly there
Five and a half years, 411 votes, no movement on this, and the roadmap doesn’t even bother to show and QOL features.
Depressing.
Would love to see this!!! Huge UX improvement for us account hoarders.
I can’t vote multiple times and I have already voted on this feature request eons ago, so here’s me just mentioning my request for this feature once again.
Just a special folder called “Archive” where its contents don’t show up in search would be enough.
With over 500 entries in my vault there’s a bunch in there that are no longer relevant in most cases. However I don’t want to delete those entries either, as they contain information that might turn out to still be relevant after all (think inactive accounts that have not been deleted yet).
Same. This is one of my most wanted features.
Absolutely need this.
Just joined the forum, to chime in, and say our company also needs this feature!!
We have a lot of accounts, that we no longer use, but don’t want to delete, for compliance reasons.
The old accounts - clutter search a lot!
