Did you find a way Casjen?
Switch the “Fill” back to being the default click action, change the new “Fill” button to edit. At least that is something. They literally took the most used function of the extension and made it more difficult to use. Yes the whole thing looks “Pretty” but who gives a flying fornication when you toss UX out the window.
So i hope that Bitwarden employees don’t take the criticism in the wrong way. I, as a user and as the family member of a product designer, understand that there is a lot of difficulty in designing or redesigning a product. Any choice you make 50% will love you and 50% will hate you.
Nonetheless, if there’s a post or reply made somewhere by a Bit warden employee highlighting what the team’s thoughts on each point are after reading this criticism (or to use the corporate lingo fashionable nowadays… feedback), it would be very helpful.
The first impression of the new design was positive. Once I start using it, I notice many things getting more complicated or cumbersome. Please give us the possibility to go back to the old design. Soon all the people I highly recommended to use Bitwarden will come and ask me how certain things work. Even the old design was not easy for older people, but now they have to relearn every step. Seniors are often annoyed, when things change and restart using the same password for everything.
This is a very “it works for me so I don’t care” response. Auto-fill worked fine and even faster in the previous version imo.
My Chromium browser has just been updated to 2024.12.0. Like everyone else, my impression is; looks better than 2024.11.2, but usability is much worse than 2024.11.2. In the desktop environment I find it annoying, but I can workaround it. I can live with it till a future release fixes usability.
If Bitwarden intends to use the the same GUI on the next release of the Android App, there needs to be a pause and a rethink. What is simply annoying in a Desktop environment would be extremely frustrating on a Android phone or tablet.
This is a downgrade that violates basic UX principles. Whoever did this UX redesign should be ashamed of their work. Like adding extra clicks to copy password and username is precisely what any Design 101 class teaches not to do.
3 posts were merged into an existing topic: “Toggle Character Count” missing on custom fields after 2024.12.0
You need to fix this right away. That’s my first message on this board.
Windows 11, Edge, 100% Scale on a 1080p resolution and I have a bloody scroll bar and reduced functionality.
Just registered here after years of being over the top happy. But this update?! Geez…
Not only is it ugly and impractical imho but my main issue is that i now have to click more to simply copy a password or username. Before the update i could just click what i needed and that was it.
Terrible update. No clue what is supposed to be better here, i couldn’t find a single thing i preferred to the way it was before!
Is this what I think it is?
I note the “Toggle Character Count” button is now missing from custom fields (browser extension). I always found this button useful.
I wonder if this is intentional or a bug?
I note it is still there in the Windows desktop app so maybe it is a bug.
Thanks for that hint. I just tested it roughly and can add, that if you add a login item, the “hamburger button” next to the custom field doesn’t seem to have a function (nothing happens when I click on it) and there comes a text (German translation in my case) that doesn’t seem to fit in for that button either… (both things marked in red in the following screenshot):
But apart from that - maybe that should also be posted in the “omnibus thread for feedback…” for the new extension ?! : Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) (or be moved there by @grb ?)
PS: Ah, I was too quick - the hamburger menu is just for moving the custom fields around… A bit un-intuitive, when you just have one custom field… But the text makes more sense now… (though I never knew, you could move the custom fields around with the arrow keys )
This is new behavior. Previously (and still possible, in the new UI), custom fields were moved by clicking and dragging the hamburger menu. The old UI did not allow this to be be done using the arrow keys.
Regardless, the icon is inscrutable. Should probably be something like .
Another person who has used product for years and signing up for community account for the first time because of this extension UI upgrade. Seeing the banner up front to “get used to it” is not promising and shows that some minds are made up and no one is going to admit a mistake could be made.
The purpose of a password manager is to securely fill passwords. That’s it, and now its been made easier to edit passwords than to fill them. Click on the item to fill which is done dozens or hundreds of times per day. Click view to view/edit which needs to be done zero to a handful of times per day. The pea sized fill button that I have to hunt and peck for next to huge areas of blank space is crazy.
Edited: I do see on Reddit that BW is saying they are looking options for the fill button, if the default behavior of clicking on the entry is not to fill then at least make the button taller and wider so it is easier to position the mouse over it. Bigger button more important than user interface purity.
The below recently appeared over on reddit…
…we’re prioritizing a fast-follow update to bring back the individual copy buttons as an optional setting. This way you can choose what works best for you…
puts pitchfork away
I’ve read this thread, and don’t see a fix for this. Browser extension version (Chrome, if it matters). So let me ask in its own post…
OLD UI: When you clicked on the icon, it showed suggestions. That’s the same and ok. Below it was credit cards, which is what I used 90% of the time if I wasn’t doing an autofill.
NEW UI: Below suggestions is every entry. WTF?!? Why would I want that? I’ll search if I want to go thru 250 entries. I want credit cards below, as that’s what I use. I see I can click on TYPE|CARD to get there, but now I’m using three clicks where before was one.
How is this better? And how can I make credit cards the default for what appears below the suggestions?
Not throwing shade at y’all - I know how hard it is to be on the receiving end of negative feedback.
That being said, really disappointed with the update. I’m just going to echo the main issues I have to amplify what others have already said in hopes that y’all can make these changes.
- The little “fill” button adds a click and is really frustrating, small and slows down the ‘click on page → click BW shield → click fully “bar” of entry’ workflow.
- Please don’t show ALL the possible entries by default. It slows everything down and is a security issue.
- As folks have said, it’s wide. really wide. even in compact mode…
- There is a trend throughout the whole UI to have essentially “radio button” style functionality (easiest example is the generate page with the 3 options next to each other, rather than a more compact element).
I know folks are concentrating on the negative, because those couple of points are really jarring, but here’s some positive feedback for y’all
- I like the “click item → edit” workflow, even if the edit page is really cluttered now.
This one is a swing and a miss for me, I really want to like it but there’s just some nasty dealbreakers there. I hope y’all can use this feedback. I don’t think you should roll back the world but there’s a lot here to improve.
As a side note - the pinned message on the thread reads like y’all are really talking down to us - the message I get from that is “you’re not intelligent enough to understand why the new UI is better, F U” - I hope that’s not what you’re intending but it doesn’t foster any goodwill IMO.
EDIT: I also really like the prominent “history” of changes on items! That’s awesome.
EDIT 2: The a11y for vision impaired folks is pretty abysmal
One of the main reasons Yahoo failed and Google succeeded was because Google kept it simple and NEVER changed their appearance, Yahoo did.
PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK AND DON’T CHANGE IT AGAIN!
