Unable to unlock browser extensions with biometrics (MacOS)

Also having this issue on Mac.

@user103 Welcome to the forum!

I moved your post out of that other topic (Unable to unlock browser extensions with Hello+face biometrics) because it was mainly about Windows and Windows Hello…

What exact issue do you have?
Did it work before - or do you try to set it up the first time?
What did you try already?
What version of the BW desktop app and extension (on Safari?) do you use?

I’m having the same problem on two different macbooks.

The feature was working properly on chrome/brave before, but it stopped working since I upgraded to MacOS 26. I tried to disable and enable the feature many times in the app and extension but it didn’t help. I restarted both and eventually restarted my laptop but nothing worked.

I have the latest Bitwarden update from the app store and update the chrome extension as well. More than happy to provide any extra info that’ll help.

@salbawardi2 Could you specify what “it stopped working” exactly means? – What error message do you get (and “where” and “when”)?

Hi @Nail1684. The browser biometrics integration was working until I upgraded to Tahoe. Now, when I enable that feature in the app and the browser extension, the browser and app fail to communicate. The browser extension shows the following page, but the app won’t open to ask me for my fingerprint.

I believe I encountered a similar bug when the last macos version was released last year.

Ok I did more research and found the problem to be this: Unlock With Biometrics | Bitwarden

For some reason the “Allow access to file URLs” in brave was disabled, so I enabled it and restarted the extension and it worked! In chrome I had to disable the “Allow access to file URLs” option then enable it again. I also had to restart the app and the extension twice until it worked!

I also noticed that the mac app has to be open for the biometrics to work. I used to be able to use it if I minimize the app or close it without quitting it, but I guess now I have to keep it open all the time. Overall, the connection is very unreliable.

@Nail1684 I’m more than happy to provide any additional information or logs.

@user103 I hope this will help you!

Same issue. It either hangs or it says “unable to setup biometrics.” This was previously working before upgrading to Macos 26.

@drainpipe663 Did you try my suggestion?

I have what I think is the same problem. MacOS 26.0.1 with BitWarden 25.10.0 in Firefox 144.0.

I believe this is a bug in the newest version of the MacOS client. This had been working flawlessly before then for me.

In the desktop app I have Browser Integration On and I’ve tried both Require verification for browser integration On and Off and I get the same thing, first the “Awaiting confirmation from Desktop” and then after a while the “Unable to set up biometrics - Action was cancelled by the desktop application”. No prompt or other feedback is shown in the Desktop app.

I looked to see if there were similar options in Firefox as salbawardi mentioned above and I don’t see any and Bitwarden appears to have all permissions turned on.

Hmmm, don’t think the desktop app got updated but maybe the browser extension did? Because now this is working once again! So ignore my previous post.

I turned on “Allow access to file URLs” in the Bitwarden Chrome extension settings, and that fixed the problem. I’m using macOS Sequoia. Thank you!
