Software release policy — update your Bitwarden clients and server

To provide the best security and support, Bitwarden will soon enforce its long-standing software release policy. Please update your Bitwarden clients and server regularly to stay secure and maintain access. More details to follow.

Less time spent maintaining old versions allows the team to deliver new features faster and more reliably.

For those self-hosting, older client/server pairs can still run (not recommended, but you can if you absolutely need to) — updating to the latest versions available is always recommended for security updates and support eligibility.

Hi,

Which part is considered the major version? For example, in 2025.8.1, is 2025 the major version or is it 8? Do you support themes for 2 years or 2 months?

Hey Kourosh, the middle number (2025.8.0) is the major version.

That is not consistent with industry nomenclature. The norm for 3-part version numbers is Major.Minor.patch. Given Bitwarden’s unique nomenclature, the “bitwarden definition” ought to be included in the policy document.

Better yet, avoid the word “major”, and simplify the statement by using dates: “Compatibility between servers and clients will be maintained for those released within 90 days of each other”.

For the record, this has now been added to the policy document.
