Password Generator No Longer Works

I am unable to generate passwords in the Chrome extension.

  1. I click the icon.
  2. I click “Generator”.
  3. I have an option of “Password, Passphrase, or Username.” Chosing and option does nothing.
  4. In the space where passwords would be generated, I have “-”
  5. The regenerate icon is grayed out.
  6. Under “Options” I can chose from a list of crap, and chosing, nothing happens.
  7. I have a list of “Generator History”. That is useless.

This change seems to have happened today.

I have users reporting the same on Edge.

My 2024.11.2 still works great though.

Update:

This issue has been fixed in the most recent releases:

  • Web Vault version 2025.6.2
  • Browser extension version 2025.6.1
  • Desktop app version 2025.6.1
  • CLI version 2025.6.1

[Original Answer:]

Log out, remove the extension, reinstall the extension, log back in.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, then try again, but also delete the extension user data folder after uninstalling the extension. For Chrome on Windows, delete the following folder before reinstalling the extension:

%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Extension Settings\nngceckbapebfimnlniiiahkandclblb

Edited to Add: A fix is scheduled to be included in the next release.

@ChrispyWood @Creamlike7 There is a bug report on GitHub - though it is for the desktop app, Bitwarden is aware that the browser extensions are also affected.

A deinstall and reinstall, like @grb suggested should help, but if I understand this comment by a BW developer on GitHub correctly, the bug may come back and a new app release with the fix is needed.

Same issue here. Using Mac with latest Chrome.
I hope they fix soon as this is an essential function as far as I am concerned.

Bitwarden:
Version: 2025.6.0
SDK: ‘main (1fa0f7a)’
Server version: 2025.6.2

PS Right clikcing on the Bitwarden icon in the taskbar and generating a code that way still works perfectly, so I’m not sure if it is a local storage issue as that would/should also affect the workings in that case, I would guess.

Confirmed to work for MS EDGE

Logout,
uninstall addon from Microsoft Edge,
delete contents of if it exists %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Local Extension Settings\jbkfoedolllekgbhcbcoahefnbanhhlh
reinstall addon,
login,
Enjoy password generation again.

Same issue here for the extension in any browser.

…and here too Brave (latest version) but it doesn’t workkk!

LMAO Does Bitwarden do ANY testing at all?

That’s what I was wondering. We put a lot of faith in this SECURITY tool, and for a simple function like this to break seems like a process issue, which could lead to security issues easily.

Yep today its busted on brave

i can not generate passwords…not extension , but the actual application, i hope this gets fixed as soon as possible…i need to generate new password for an account within this week

The issue is also on the application ( i dont use extention much , i mainly use phone and desktop application on windows )

The same answer applies: Until the next update (which is expected to include a permanent fix to the problem), if you experience this issue, log out, uninstall the app, delete the user data folder, reinstall the app, log back in.

@grb Desktop app and CLI just got new 2025.6.1 releases, I guess the browser extension will follow soon.

PS: And browser extension 2025.6.1 is also there now (though as usual, not yet in the “browser stores”)…

Same issue, can’t bother with reinstalling. Let me know when fix

@Airidas_Brikas Welcome to the forum!

Letting you know.

Fixed today with Extension update 2025.6.1.
To manually update extensions:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and go to edge://extensions.
  2. Enable “Developer mode” by toggling the switch.
  3. Click the “Update” button.
