Move the Notes field Copy button, to maximize Notes field width

Hello. I was setting up Bitwarden for my family whose Android devices use larger-than-default font sizes. I noticed that the notes fields are almost unreadable on their phones.

(* The note content in the picture is fictitious info for example purposes only.)

The margins+paddings+copy button take up so much horizontal space that the text area is scrunched very narrow. Only 1~3 words per line with larger fonts and the typography turns into a mess. Especially the copy button. It seems like a significant waste of space to let it occupy the entire right side of the text area.

The current design of centering the copy button vertically in the text box doesn’t seem to provide much functional benefit. It just makes the button harder to locate when a long note spans multiple screens.

Therefore I suggest move the copy button (at least for multi-line text fields) to a different place, such as the top of the text box / the right of the field name line, so it only occupies a small vertical height rather than precious horizontal width.

Alternatively, the ability to customize the in-app font size would also help, so we could make the font smaller to fit more words per line. (We don’t want to change the device’s font size just to solve this single issue in Bitwarden.)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or if it has anything to do with the redesign, but this thread mentioned inefficiency of space use and font size settings, so I’m leaving the comment here as a usability issue.

That’s a valid point, I agree!

It probably doesn’t belong to this thread, but one of our mods such will likely move it for you! @grb?

Thanks for moving the post. However I want to clarify that my original intent was to offer feedback on this issue in the current design and request a more user-friendly UI solution for note readability on phones with larger font settings. It is not necessarily limited to the copy button position.

Some potential improvements could be:

  • Reduce horizontal margins/paddings.
Though I guess this would be less likely as it involves tweaking the global UI styles. Perhaps I can hope for it in the “compact mode” for the mobile versions.

  • Eliminate the copy button’s occupation of horizontal width.
This might also be a challenge for the global style given this is how the icon buttons are positioned in all other types of fields.

  • Add ability to change in-app font size.
Larger fonts are generally inefficient and easily cut off in most screens in Bitwarden thus we(my family)'d love to make it smaller anyway. Font size customization could also benefit more other users.

  • Markdown/formatting support.
One of the current problems is that when text is broken into short fragmented lines, it becomes impossible to recognize sentences and lists. Formatting rendering like bullet lists, indentation, bold text, etc. could help somewhat in distinguishing different parts of content.

I understand that Bitwarden is not a dedicated note taking app and that some changes may not be worth just for addressing this specific issue on note fields. But if some of these isn’t feasible, other improvements would still be welcome as long as they alleviate the problem.

@csc Well, don’t take this the wrong way, but your additions make matters worse now.

First, there are some existing feature requests, that may match some of your requests:

Then, feature requests should be about (more or less) one specific thing only. Various different requests in one feature request, make it impossible to count votes in a meaningful way. (example: how should one vote, if they were very much for one request, but strictly against another one in the same feature request?)

The post was initially posted under Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) as a comment. People there provide feedback on various issues and request improvements, such as the space taking up too much room and should be reduced, the list font being too small and should be enlarged and have the contrast enhanced, etc.

My point is that the current design for notes field has this readability issue, it needs improvement, and I suggested some possible solutions along the way. The focus is to address this issue (through whatever ways they find reasonable) but not on requesting all these features.

But I’m not sure if it’s related to the redesign, and I can’t find another general thread related to design and usability issues.

It seems odd to repeatedly posting the same image and reply under separate feature request threads so I originally post this as a comment under that thread, so the team might realize it if they want to collect usability issues.

I moved your comment because the thread in which you posted in was a discussion of the browser extension UI, for which a redesign was released in version 2024.12.0; also, that thread has been superseded by a later thread that discusses UI revisions that were made in browser extension versions 2025.1.0 and later. In contrast, you were proposing a change in the mobile app UI.

If you don’t wish to make a formal feature request, I can move your post into the Ask the Community category as a general discussion thread.

Thank’s for the explanation, that’s something I was unclear about. Usability issues (UX) in redesigned UI (2024.12.0) is tagged as app:all, and I read all the replies and saw some screenshots and mentions related to mobile devices, and the thread has recent replies. My mistake for the misunderstanding.

I did saw 2025.1.0 / 2025.2.0 Browser Extension UI/UX Megathread has Browser Extension in title that’s why I didn’t went there.

I didn’t post this as a feature request, say moving the copy button, because I thought if this specific feature wasn’t supported or considered, would that mean the issue itself would be ignored and not paid attention anymore? But no, the devs can still keep this in mind and improve it through other features or UI adjustments. (If anything, my request is “readable notes under larger device font settings”.)

I’d still like to raise this issue as a whole. Feel free to place it where it fits best.

My inclination is to leave it where it is for now. There is already a few relevant feature requests that propose various approaches to solving the general problem:

The main distinguishing feature of your post was the suggestion to move the copy icon, which is why I made that the title of this Feature Request topic.

As the various related feature request threads mature and accumulate more input from the community, we may decide to merge some of the threads in the future.
