MacOS 11 (Big Sur) support

Hello everyone!

I’m about to migrate from 1Password to Bitwarden.
I was unpleasantly surprised to find that the latest versions of Bitwarden Desktop are no longer compatible with macOS Big Sur.

I found a 2025 version of Bitwarden on GitHub that works perfectly, but it auto-updates after a few days of use.
Is there a way to block updates?

I have Little Snitch as a firewall, but I don’t know which host to block…
I’ve seen some threads mentioning that it’s possible via flags, but I didn’t understand how to modify that.

(OpenCore Legacy Patcher is not an option the Mac has to stay on Big Sur.)

Thanks in advance!

@SOY75 Welcome to the forum!

Apple also no longer supports MacOS 11 (Big Sur)… and Bitwarden…:

Hm… There was this announcement a while ago:

Essentially, every version that is three or more major versions behind, is considered out-of-support now (and not necessarily compatible to the latest server versions):

(–> Software Release Support | Bitwarden)

And my impression is, that there are more breaking changes to come, which will not even make it possible to use many older and out-of-support client versions… (e.g. changes with vault/item encryption etc. on the server side will make it impossible for older clients, that don’t support those changes, to connect to the BW servers)

I guess I don’t really have much choice but to stick with 1Password for another year in that case, or else just use the bitwarden Firefox extension.
Time to buy a new mac!

Thanks a lot for your fast reply  @Nail1684

I’m not sure what you’re doing, but from what I see the current 1Password app also needs at least MacOS 12.

Definitely!
