Hi - Using the Bitwarden Chrome Ext., I received the attached notification, which looks suspicious and I don’t understand what I’m being alerted to. Is this something I should be concerned with or address? Thank you!
Hey there, if you visit the official site, you’ll see the package name in the URL bar. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/bitwarden-password-manage/nngceckbapebfimnlniiiahkandclblb?browser=chrome
Are you saying, “nngceckbapebfimnlniiiahkandclblb” is a legitimate Bitwarden ext. name?
Yes, you can confirm by following the link on the official download page: Download the Bitwarden Password Manager App for iPhone, Android, Chrome, Safari, and More | Bitwarden
If this notification is in response to background updates of the browser extension, then it may be advisable (and more re-assuring for users) to have a Bitwarden-branded notification produced by the extension itself, instead of allowing the browser’s generic notification to be displayed. Some Google searches suggest that this would involve having the event handler make calls to self.registration.showNotification() and/or event.waitUntil() — but this is beyond my personal expertise.
Thanks all, I’ll pass the feedback along to the team.
EDIT: The name of the ID is controlled by Google and can not be changed.
Not sure if this was intended for me or for @Dopher71, but my point was that if the extension displays its own notification, then the extension ID would not need to be shown at all.
Thanks @grb the team is exploring the notification side of the things.
@Dopher71 I moved your posts into an existing thread on the same topic.
@ccaag The discussion above (merged from another thread) will hopefully clarify the issue.
This conversation seems related to this earlier feature request…
Thank you for your quick and informative assistance everyone!
But what is causing this notification to appear? I also receive it from time to time, and it doesn’t seem to necessarily correspond to an update of the extension version. For example, I just saw the notification today (Dec 9, 2025) even though the latest extension is 2025.11.1 (from November), which I’ve had for weeks. Why is an update being made in the background if it is not a new version?
I can add there is a GitHub issue where those notifications were discussed recently – and it seems, they are not intended (and probably / hopefully it’s getting investigated):
Ah, thanks, @Nail1684 . The conversation you referenced mentions it appears after a sync when the vault has been updated on another device. I just tested this and sure enough, it almost immediately generated the notification.
