Firefox addon: TOTP not automatically copied

Recently TOTP codes are not automatically copied. I also have to open up the item to be able to copy the TOTP.
Odd thing is that before the username/password is copied the TOTP can be copied without opening the item. After Ctrl+Shift+L has been used to paste username/password, the TOTP is greyed out and can’t be clicked. Here I have to open the item to copy the TOTP.

This happens with latest BW addon 2023.12.0 and I also had it with previous version 2023.10.2.
I have tested with Firefox 115.5 and 120.
I have not had a chance to test with any other browser yet.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I have tested to reinstall addon. I have tested with new Firefox profile. Nothing has helped so far.

Seems I am the only one encountering this problem.

Hello,

You are not alone. I do a have the same issue since for some days. I didn’t correlate with the new version of the browser plugin update since it autoupdates in background but I can reproduce it with on 3 different machines :

  • 1 Macbooks Air M1 OSX Sonoma 14.1.2 with Firefox v120.0.1 ; Safari v17.1.2 ; Chrome v120.0.6099.109
  • 1 MacBook Air M2 OSX Sonoma 14.1.2 with Firefox v120.0.1 ; Safari v17.1.2

  • 1 Windows 10pro 22H2 Firefox v120.0.1 ; Chrome v120

All plugin Extensions are 2023-12.

I upgraded the Desktop app this morning on the Mac M1 to 2023-10-1 and the problem remains.

How to reproduce :

1 - navigate to a website that requires a TOTP code and where the plugin worked before.

2 - Unlock the plugin (code or touchID)

3 - Click on the plugin. At that stage the TOTP icon is blue for the record

4 - Click on the record to autofill the ID+Pwd

5 - Paste the clipboard in the TOTP entry form and you get what was in it before instead of the TOTP code.

From that stage the TOTP icon of the record is grey out like if were not setup !!!

6 - To overcome the problem you need to open the record and copy the TOTP code from the record form and paste it into the web site entry field.

This behaviour is clearly a regression since it was working fine before. Please correct it asap.

There is a similar thread here:

In addition, there is a bug report on GitHub:

Thanks. I tried this on eBay and it works, e.g., copy the TOTP before using Crtl+Shift+L although you need to be quick because eBay has a graphical hCaptcha screen to “solve” before you get to the TOTP entry screen.

Don’t know why I missed that thread. Perhaps I was distracted by Ebay…

Then, I filed that bug report. Let’s see what happens with it.

Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone!

Hello Headpiece2055,

copy the TOTP before using Crtl+Shift+L

Of course it works if you copy the TOTP code BEFORE using Ctrl+Shift+L because you do manually what should be done automatically by the plugin. Since the plugin doesn’t copy anymore the TOTP code into the clipboard, Ctrl+V pastes what is present at that time : The code you copied manually.
Copying the TOTP code before is a nice “workaround” but not a solution.

Have a nice day.

A workaround to this issue on my Macbook Air M2 is disabling Handoff (the thing that syncs your clipboard between Apple devices on your iCloud account). After doing this, Bitwarden’s automatic clipboard functionality started working just fine.

For anyone else coming here with this problem, I was also having it starting a couple days ago.

I found that in the Firefox, extension, under Settings, then Options, there is a checkbox for “Copy TOTP Automatically”. For no apparent reason this unchecked itself.

Now it’s working for me again.

Thanks, that fixed if for me as well. Not sure how it got unchecked as I’ve been using it for a long time

You’re welcome!

I think they must have updated the extension to have this unchecked by default for some reason. It broke itself on both my work and personal accounts. I also keep getting tickets and emails from users that it isn’t working.

Not sure why they would do this but here we are
