Every time you open Bitwarden to view vault, add/login with passkey, etc., it will use a regular tab and create history and browsing data as if you were browsing using a regular tab.
This is true even if you are browsing in an incognito tab. It will still open a regular tab every time Bitwarden is opened.
So I hope there will be an update to the Bitwarden extension that will check if you are browsing using an incognito tab or a regular tab, and then open the same type of tab.
What version of the browser extension are you using, and how are you opening the extension in a browser tab? Normally, the browser opens in a pop-up viewport that is not a browser tab. If you use the pop-out function, you can open the extension in a new browser window, but not in a separate tab within your current browser window.
Older versions of Bitwarden did use to open a new browser tab under certain circumstances (e.g., when attempting to autofill while the vault was locked), and at the time, I posted a feature request similar to yours:
(the above feature request was closed when Bitwarden changed its method for handling such unlock scenarios).
Please explain in a little more detail how you are using the browser extension.
I’m using Chrome 109, the Bitwarden version I’m using is 2024.10.1.
Basically, my idea is quite similar to yours.
Let’s say, I’m browsing Github in an incognito tab, I want to log in with passkey, a new Bitwarden “log in with passkey” window will be opened.
This new window is using a regular tab instead of an incognito tab (like I’m browsing in). If you look in the browser history, you’ll also see that it keeps a history of this “log in with passkey” window:
So I want to change it so that Bitwarden will open to determine what type of tab the user is browsing (regular or incognito), and then open to the same type of tab. Or fixed to open with incognito tab like your idea is also a good idea!
OK, so it sounds like it is indeed the same issue that I was facing in 2022. For clarity, I have changed the title of your feature request (was: “Open in the same tab type”).
Bitwarden uses GitHub exclusively for tracking bug reports, and will close any issues reported if they are deemed to be requests for new or improved functionality. This forum is the official venue for proposing feature requests.
