Does 2024.2.3 support Chrome passkeys on macOS?

I’m confused by this statement:

PRF is currently available in Chromium based browsers, such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

I am running Chrome on macOS and no matter how many times I try to store a passkey in the Chrome profile, the passkey is stored without encryption which means it cannot be used for vault login.

I’m self hosted on 2024.2.3 with web 2024.2.5.

BTW, creating and storing a passkey in a Yubikey works great (except for all the re-inputting of the PIN).

Appreciate any suggestions.

Well, beginning with the naming of your topic, I would rather speculate, that the problem would be more that “Chrome passkeys” don’t support the requirements for Bitwarden’s “login with passkey”-passkeys “with encryption”.

When your passkey can’t be stored “with encryption”, I further speculate that it is either Chrome or MacOS or both in combination, that hinders it. PS: But when you can create it on Yubikeys with Chrome on MacOS, I think the problem is more, that the “place” where you store your passkey, doesn’t support the storage “with encryption”… see my text below… and the next two questions, are irrelevant then, I think…

Your Chrome ist up-to-date (122.xxxxxx)?

And what version of MacOS are we talking about?

PS:

  1. If you had a physical security key to create a passkey on (I assume, you haven’t, because than you would already have done the following), then you could try if it works with encryption - and maybe this would be a sign, that your MacOS doesn’t restrict it in general ? And/or if you do that with Chrome: that the PRF with Chrome works in your MacOS, generally. ?! I just read (again), that you wrote it works with a YubiKey… I assume, you also used Chrome browser for that? - Then I really would think, that Chrome browser/Google password manager (or wherever your passkey is saved) doesn’t support the storage of passkeys with encryption. (BTW: I think this was discussed here the last weeks - Bitwarden as well doesn’t support the storage of passkeys with encryption in the vault as well)

  2. I don’t use Chrome browser and - more or less obviously - not Google’s password manager. I think when you try to save a passkey in Chrome, it saves it in Googles password manager in the end?? - Does Google password manager support the storage of passkeys with encryption? (maybe someone else knows some answers here…)
