I can no longer access my Chrome Browser Extension for Bitwarden. I click on the link and insert my email address and password. Then it asks me for my Verification Code which I get from my phone and enter that and then the icon goes back to greyed out and doesn’t let me in. I can use the web version and desktop version with no issues. I have cleaned the browser cache and that doesn’t work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the extension and that didn’t work. I have same issues using Microsoft Edge. If I reboot my computer it works the first time but after about an hour or so it stops working again.
@rhmcguire Welcome to the forum!
Please look carefully at the prompt wording, and check whether or not it includes the phrase “We don’t recognize this device.”.
Could you please be more specific? Are you using an authenticator app on your phone to generate TOTP codes? Or are you accessing your email account from your phone, and getting verification codes by email?
To clarify, when you log in to the Web Vault and Desktop app, are you asked to enter a verification code?
Yes I’m using the Bitwarden Authenticator App on my phone to generate the TOTP codes. I’m not sure why it keeps asking me to get Authenticator Codes to login as I don’t think it was doing that before. Maybe I made a change in settings to do that and don’t need to? It asks to verification codes in the browser extension, desktop and web apps.
So, just to be sure – the prompt you see after you enter your email address and master password matches this in “wording”:
?
(If not, please specify what you see, or if you can, post a screenshot of it – but make sure to redact personal information if necessary).
If it’s indeed 2FA you set up for your Bitwarden account, then maybe the 30-day-“remember me” period just expired. Getting asked for 2FA, when you set up 2FA, is in itself not unexpected.
In your original post you wrote:
… so, I’m a bit confused now if you either also can’t login on the web vault and desktop app – or if it works without any issues?
And from your original post:
Do you get any error message? If yes, what does it say?
Hm, could you please try to update / sync the current time both on your phone and on your computer. – On your phone and on Windows it should be in the respective “Settings” sections. (I’ll try to search for a post here which might give some more explanation for Windows, and add it here – PS: Here some more infos for that / on Windows: 2FAS Verification Code isn't working - #4 by grb)
PS: Different section in the Help Sites, but also “true” for authenticator app 2FA itself – the issue of the “synced time” and TOTP codes: Integrated Authenticator | Bitwarden
Yes that’s the screen I’m seeing when I try to login.
Please also answer the first question that I had asked — it is important:
Alternatively (or additionally), please check whether or not the verification prompt includes a button labeled Use your verification code.
I have the Date and Time set to Automatic, with Automatic Time Zone and Time Zone based on location on my phone but I just noticed on my computer that the Set Time Automatically is set to on but the Time Zone is not set to Automatic.
If there is a “sync now” button, you might try to use that also.
Here also, try to “Sync now” – unfortunately I can only provide a German screenshot from my Windows 11 (on the bottom left you can also see when the last automatic sync happened):
Ok I just set my computer to Set Automatic Time Zone and pressed the Synch Now button and also synched the phone and both were done at 6:32 pm local time here in Portugal. Should Bitwarden be setup for 2FA using verification codes for login? Can I turn this option off?
Okay, best thing to get to a possible answer to this – and hopefully everything else relevant here: could you please make a screenshot of that exact prompt for a “verification code” you see – and post it here for us?
(and again, if there is any personal information on it, redact it before you post it)
Okay, thank you!
Could you now please specify the error message you get when you enter a code from your authenticator app?
I don’t get an error message the Bitwarden icon briefly goes to blue and then back to greyed out. I even disabled the 2FA for Bitwarden and it still doesn’t work. I have a short video showing it but not sure how to get it to you.
Which Bitwarden icon are you referring to here? (do you mean the BW badge/icon in the toolbar of your browser?)
There are only two methods to do that:
-
Disabling all 2FA methods manually in the web vault.
-
Using your 2FA recovery code.
As far as I understand your problem, you can’t access the web vault at the moment, so I would doubt you could disable 2FA there. So, did you enter your 2FA recovery code here already:
?
If you didn’t do that already, then I would recommend to do that now.
PS:
FYI, as long as you still see that exact (!) screen:
… your 2FA for your Bitwarden account/vault was/is not disabled. (if you see a different prompt then, that might be another case, and then please post it as a screenshot again)
I can access my web vault and desktop app with no issues using email and master password. It’s just the browser extension that is not working. I disabled the 2FA for Bitwarden using the web vault. I’m also using Nord VPN but have tried having it connected and disconnected and doesn’t seem to make a difference.
This is the icon I said that when I login it goes to blue like it’s supposed to but then it goes to greyed and doesn’t log me in.
Yesterday, you wrote the opposite:
That makes it a bit hard to understand your issue so that we could help, to be honest.
Okay, just to be sure, could you please post that screenshot of your 2-Step Login methods page from your web vault (my screenshot stems from a test account I use for the forum):
Okay, we would need the screenshot of the “next” prompt that you get after you typed in your master password.
