I’ve been using the Chrome extension and autofill for at least a couple years and it works fine. But I now want to turn off autofill for a specific site. Actually, it’s the Bitwarden vault site. It’s pretty frustrating when I edit a login in my browser, let’s say for Google, and the extension overwrites the values with the settings for Bitwarden because that’s the site I’m on. So anyway, when I edit the login, I don’t have any option named “Autofill on page load.” As I said, the feature works great, it’s turned on in the extension, but I want to turn it off for a specific site and that option just isn’t there. I’ve included a screenshot here which I found on the “Autofill from Browser Extension” web page alongside what I actually see when I edit a login. I don’t have that circled option. How can I turn that feature off for a specific login?
@crevier Welcome to the forum!
Could you confirm that “autofill on page load” is indeed turned on in the settings of your extension? – Here a screenshot (it’s disabled in the screenshot):
Apart from that, you can use the match detection option “Never” for that respective URL (gear icon in “Edit” mode):
Another option would be to add the URL to your “blocked domains”: Block Autofill on Specific Sites | Bitwarden
PS:
I’m not sure I understand that… To use your example: if you’re on the Bitwarden vault site and want to edit your Google login item… then I guess you “autofill” unintended – either automatically with autofill on page load or by clicking the item in your browser extension… but: in both cases, it should not autofill in the first place.
If indeed your login item can be “autofilled” on the wrong URL, your URLs and match detection settings have to be checked. (or I misunderstood what you were trying to say here)
Yes, the option is turned on in the extension settings. It works great on most sites.
Yes, that’s the problem. I’m on the vault web page. And I edit a login (for any site) and since I have autologin turned on in the extension, it fills in the form fields. But I don’t want it to autologin when I’m on the Bitwarden vault web page.
I appreciate your info, but I just want to know where I can find the “Autofill on page load.” option when editing a login? The screenshot provided on the web page I mentioned shows that it’s just below the “+ Add website” option, but I don’t see it. I just want to turn that option off for the Bitwarden vault web page.
Thanks for suggesting the use of the “Blocked Domains” option. I just added vault.bitwarden.com to that. Hopefully it helps. I’m still wondering about where that other option is though.?? Thanks again.
when I edit a vault entry, I do not have an option to autofill on page load.
However, If I go to settings >> Autofill and check the Autofill on page load checkbox (like this)
The option to change it for an individual vault entry becomes visible:

If your experience differs, please mention your versions.
@crevier What specific version of the Chrome browser extension are you using (Settings > About > About Bitwarden > Copy)? Where did you download it?
It seems that your extension may be deprecated, corrupted, or inauthentic. In the screenshot in your first post, the “Back” button (<) is missing from the UI.
Please uninstall your browser extension, and install the latest official version from the Chrome Web Store.
That seems to be because the screenshots were copied from the Help Sites, I guess:
This is true of the left screenshot (which does have a back button), but not of the right screenshot (which OP described as “what I actually see when I edit a login”).
@grb Ah, you’re right. Didn’t see that the back button was only missing on the right image. – That reminds me of a suspicion I had before: @crevier could it be that this “Edit” dialog screenshot stems from the Bitwarden web vault / web app? (–> there is no back button in “Edit mode” in the web vault)
If it was the web vault: since the web vault can’t autofill, it would also explain why you don’t see the “Autofill on page load?” option in “Edit mode”. That is only visible when you use the browser extension, since only the browser extension can “autofill” (including “autofill on page load”).
I appreciate everyone’s comments here. I’m facing a couple of limitations here since I’m a new user (just new in this community; been using Bitwarden for 5+ years). When I tried to reply originally it told me: “you’ve reached the maximum number of replies a new user can create on their first day. Please wait 12 hours and you’ll be able to create more replies.” Before that, it told me that I can only embed one image but I had two screenshots. So I’ve combined both screenshots into one image below.
It looks like I have the same versions as @denbesten:
Windows 11 Pro, 25H2
Chrome 149.0.7827.114
Bitwarden Browser extension 2026.5.1
So I just checked everything again. Here are updated screenshots (pretty much the same as before):
In case I wasn’t clear, for this specific need, I like the autofill option (which I can use with my mouse to fill in the value), I just want to turn off the “Autofill on page load” option for one site (the Bitwarden vault site). See also the screenshot that I originally provided; here’s the article that explains what I’m expecting:
In the above article, scroll down to the “On page load” section.
I’m happy to do more troubleshooting, testing, screenshots, etc.
@Nail1684 you said you didn’t understand, so I’ll try to explain again. I have an entry in my vault with my Bitwarden account info and I have another entry in my vault with my Google account (plus of course hundreds of others). So I’m on my computer, using Chrome, viewing my Bitwarden vault. I edit a login (say for my Google account). But because I’m on the Bitwarden website, the Bitwarden extension kicks in and autofills my Bitwarden credentials into the ID and password fields; that’s not good because I’m not editing my Bitwarden info, I’m editing my Google info. The biggest problem is that when this first happened to me, I didn’t notice. I simply edited a login so that I can add a note to it. Then I clicked “Save”. But in addition to saving my new note, it also saved my Bitwarden ID and password into that record, overwriting the previous values.
Could you please show a non-cropped screenshot of your “Edit Login” screen? @Nail1684 and I believe that you are actually editing your login item in the Bitwarden Web Vault app (vault.bitwarden.com or vault.bitwarden.eu), and not in the browser extension. If you show the full screenshot of the “Edit Login” page, we would be able to confirm that.
“Edit Login” in Browser Extension:
“Edit Login” in Web Vault:
As you can see, the main visual differences is the absence or presence of a “Back” button (<) in the top left corner, and the presence of a pop-out button (
) or a close button (
) in the top right corner. Your screenshot is missing the “Back” button (indicating that you are looking in the Web Vault), but to confirm, it would be helpful if you could post a screenshot that shows both the top-left and top-right corners of your “Edit Login” form.
And as @Nail1684 has already noted, if you are using the Web Vault, then it is normal for the “Autofill on page load?” option not to be present — this option can only be accessed if editing a login item using the browser extension.
You fix that issue by editing the vault item for your Bitwarden account credentials, changing the “Website (URI)” field to specify the login page only (https://vault.bitwarden.com/#/login or https://vault.bitwarden.eu/#/login, depending what server you use), and setting the website-specific “Match Detection” option to “Exact”:
… I agree with @grb here… and on the other hand, @crevier, if that “Autofill on page load?” option was indeed missing in the “Edit dialog” in your browser extension (while autofill on page load is enabled), then you could try to deinstall/reinstall the extension.
Especially if that doesn’t change anything… another thought: are you self-hosting your Bitwarden server by any chance?
Alright, I’ve figured it out. You’re both correct @Nail1684 and @grb. I was indeed editing the login on the vault website and not via the extension. Obviously, I was thinking that the additional “Autofill on page load?” option would also exist on the vault website. I understand that this auto fill stuff is specifically an extension thing, but I’m also aware of extensions that can change the behavior of a web page (I’ve written a couple such extensions for my own use), especially if the extension and the website are from the same company.
I just wasn’t thinking that the option would never exist in the website version. So, THANK YOU for going around in a circle with me to get to the bottom of this. Also, I took @grb’s suggestion and changed the entry for the vault to be an “Exact” match. That of course makes a lot of sense as well. I could have/should have thought of that too.
For what it’s worth, my wife and I share our account and I have my Bitwarden credentials in there because they are shared with her so when I die she can get at it. I like Bitwarden a lot and enjoy all of its features. This one thing just bugged me.
Thanks again!!
@crevier Glad to hear that your issues are resolved.
I understand that such arrangements are not uncommon, but for what it’s worth, sharing a Bitwarden account with another person is actually not permitted by the Terms of Service.
The “proper” way of ensuring that your vault can be taken over by your wife when the time comes is to set up Emergency Access. If you have other credentials that you share with your wife, the proper way of doing so is set up a so-called “organization” for storing shared vault items.
This arrangement also creates a risk that she may get locked out. If all of your Bitwarden apps and browser extensions are logged out at once (which can happen when a user makes changes to their account security settings, and sometimes occurs unexpectedly due to actions taken by Bitwarden), then she would have no way of logging back in.
It’s OK to store your Bitwarden master password in your Bitwarden vault (and/or in her Bitwarden vault, or in a shared organization vault) for convenience, but to prevent data loss resulting from account lock-out, it is best practice to always keep a record of your Bitwarden master password (and your 2FA reset code) on an Emergency Sheet.
OK, well, here I go again; I guess I’ll clarify my “share an account” comment. We each have our own logins. I didn’t mean that we’re both logging in with the same ID/password. Our vaults are definitely separate. Bitwarden offers personal accounts that can be shared by multiple users. And we’ve used the Emergency Access feature. And we use an Organization to share stuff.
Also, for what it’s worth, it looks like Bitwarden does not offer a product level for 2 users any more. The pricing webpage for personal accounts only shows a level for 1 user and a family level for up to 6 users.
