Bring "Click items to autofill on Vault view" option to Safari extension

The FILL button on the drop down menu is very small. The most intuitive thing to do is to just click on the menu item, which I keep doing, which does not fill it in, but takes you to the edit page. The smaller FILL button should be the EDIT button because that’s not something you usually need to do.

So to make BitWarden faster and more intuitive, I would like to request that you make the FILL button the EDIT button so that clicking anywhere on the menu item fills the item in because that is clearly the main reason we have BitWarden, to easily fill in passwords.

Closing this as implemented (as of version 2024.12.4). Go to Settings > Autofill, and enable the fifth option (“Click items to autofill on Vault view”):

If you are using Firefox, you may need to wait until Mozilla has approved the 2024.12.4 extension update.

I am using Bitwarden on Mac with Safari and there is no option to change this with the very latest version.

In your Safari browser extension, please go to Settings > About > About Bitwarden, take a screenshot, and post it here.

I believe that you may still be on version 2024.12.1, since the Safari extension is tied to the macOS Desktop app.

If you use any other browser (with an updated extension), then the setting I pointed out should be available.

I cannot imagine that Bitwarden does not have plans to also update the Safari extension for feature parity with the other extensions, but in case you don’t have faith this will happen, I am re-opening your feature request thread for now (will close it again when the Safari extension update is released).

I have updated your topic title to more accurately reflect the scope of your request (title was: “The tiny FILL button should be the EDIT button”; new title is: “Bring “Click items to autofill on Vault view” option to Safari extension”).

Yeah, I use it in Safari and Firefox and in both cases, the settings you describe are not there. This is from Safari.

What version of the browser extension are you using? You can find the version number under:
settings >> about >> about Bitwarden

Not sure if you saw this request from above:

“Click items to autofill on Vault view” was added in version 2024.12.4. Since you are still on 2024.12.2, that is why you do not yet have the checkbox. There is a delay while the apple store approves new versions.

Here are the (approximate) dates that Bitwarden submitted the various releases to the browser stores:

  • 2024.12.2 Dec 16, 2024
  • 2024.12.4 Dec 27, 2024
  • 2025.01.01 Jan 8, 2025 strike this; that was a webvault release, not a browser extension.

Since 12.4 was released 11 days after 12.2, it seems likely you should have 12.4 within 11 days.

The feature in question (PR #12557) was merged in to the codebase on Dec. 23, 2024. The most recent client release for macOS was a week earlier. Thus, when the next macOS update is released, the option to “Click items to autofill on Vault view” should be available in the Safari extension.

Ah, okay, so it is correct that the feature is not yet available on the Mac, but it will be. That’s good. Thanks.

Please get rid of the awful fill button. It was so easy before to pick an account by simply pressing it. I work in IT and I login to systems all day and night long. This change has severely impacted the speed of my work. It is in poor design and should be removed please!

@troyd123 Welcome to the forum!

If you already have extension version 2024.12.4, you can get rid of it now:
Settings → Autofill → Click items to autofill on Vault view

(at the moment, only Safari, Firefox and DuckDuckGo did not arrive at this version - Firefox because the review process of Mozilla is still in process, and Safari and DDG because they are both tied to the release of the desktop version, which “lags behind” with the new extension versions)

@troyd123 Welcome to the forum!

I assume that you are posting in this topic because you also use Safari, and have a browser extension that is stuck on version 2024.12.2. If you haven’t already done so, please read the discussion in the thread above, starting here.

How do I know when it is updated to 12.4 so I can download it? Also, what is the difference between downloading the app on the Bitwarden website or using the Mac App store? Not clear about that.

Thank you but no, I use firefox. You should wait until ALL browsers support this option before rolling out changes that greatly change the efficiency of the product.

Great choice!

Well, first, neither @grb nor me are Bitwarden employees.

And, no offence and as I share your sentiment, it is technical more or less impossible what you suggest, because when the different browsers offer the update to their users, is not in Bitwarden’s control. So every browser getting a change or feature at the same time is practically impossible.

Beyond being difficult to accomplish for the reasons @Nail1684 stated, simultaneous rollouts are bad because they amplify problems when something goes wrong.
Phasing updates (early adopters first, then a slowly growing percentage) flattens the curve, making it possible for support and developers to focus on fixing the problem, instead of spending all their time answering the phone. The importance of this was one of the most-important lessons-learned from the 2024 CrowdStrike incident.

At the same time, there is a balance to be had because support is less complicated when everyone is on the same version.

Incidentally, I too am not a Bitwarden employee. Employees have shields overlaying their avatar.
