Bring "Click items to autofill on Vault view" option to Safari extension

Updates are normally automatic. If you plan to side-load the new version before it becomes available in the Apple App Store, then you can check the GitHub repository for availability of Desktop version 2025.1.0. Alternatively, see the :bulb: Tip box here for instructions on how to get notifications by email.

Personally, I like the Fill button, but no matter, I am just another Bitwarden customer, and have no say in their decision-making or release schedule. And as already noted in one of the above comments, Bitwarden has no control over the app store embargo delays imposed by Mozilla, Google, Apple, etc.

Apologies, this forum is a bit awkward to reply and who it goes to. I like to turn off the fill button. They should have waited to roll out this change until all browsers support disabling this button. Firefox on the computer, if you click the name of the site, goes to settings instead of filling the credentials. Thinking about this, you need to go to the settings very rarely, but need to fill very frequently. Logic would suggest that the old way is better. I’ll stop griping.

FTFY.

Although you are clearly not alone in this way of using the browser extension, there are other users, who prefer to use completely different techniques for autofilling, without opening the browser extension window and clicking around in there.

It is not a matter of browser support. All browsers support the new feature, and the 2024.12.4 browser extension has been released for all major browsers (except, perhaps, Safari, which is a special case). The only hold-up for Firefox is that the Mozilla Foundation has not yet issued their stamp of approval on version 20204.12.4 and made it available in the Firefox add-ons store; Mozilla’s approval process seems to be on the slow side compared to other app store approvals. Unfortunately, Mozilla has also decided to forbid users from sideloading Firefox extensions that have not yet been approved. Therefore, if you wish to have access to the latest greatest version of any browser extension, you may want to consider using a different browser.

@David_Fine … did the “Click items to autofill on Vault view” settings option arrive on the Safari extension in the meantime?

OK this is something, but without changing the fill button to an edit button as suggested, now when I need to edit, I need to do 3 steps: click the … menu, click view, then click edit. It would be awesome if we could switch the fill button to an edit button as suggested rather than just removing the button.

This is a slight aside but I don’t really even see much utility in having a separate read-only view mode anyway. It could just be one view where you can see the details and if you click in a field it lets you edit it. This would be like any word document editor. When you open the file, you can look and/or edit it, there’s not this idea of a separate view mode and edit mode.

Anyway just saying I agree with OP that the fill button should change to an edit button while also setting it so that clicking anywhere else in the bar of a vault view item does autofill. Thanks!

… do you speak of Safari?

Sorry, I just edited my comment. I am using Firefox. I would prefer it to be as @David_Fine suggested where the fill button becomes an edit button rather than just going away when you select the " Click items to autofill on Vault view" option.

Ah, okay…

BTW, what do you mean by “now the edit button is gone”? The edit button is still in the “item view” window, so it shouldn’t be “gone” or be somewhere else…?!

Please re-read my comment after my edits

Yup, now I see that you edited that part also…

There was never a direct-access “Edit” button — even in the old UI, you had to open the “View Item” page before you could access the edit button.

That being said, it is not an unreasonable request to want faster access to the "Edit Item’ screen, but it would be a different feature request, unrelated to the current one (which should probably be closed as completed, unless I am mistaken about the parity of the Safari extension…@Nail1684? @dwbit?).

Agreed!

I thought about that as well - and would also guess, that there should be parity with this function… Unfortunately, I have no way to test it myself (no :green_apple:-products).

I closed this Feature Request (FR) now, as this function is assumed to be there also for the Safari extension.

The setting should be here now (since browser extension version 2025.2.2 - see here): Settings → Appearance → Click items in autofill suggestion to fill

If that is not the case, the Feature Request can be reopened (just ping any moderator).
