We’ve run into an issue after accidentally removing one of our members and then re-adding her using the same email address. Since then, she’s been unable to log into the Bitwarden Windows app or browser extensions. The error message consistently reads:
“Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘toLowerCase’)”
We are self-hosted, could someone shed some light on what might be causing this and how we can fix it?
Hello
We are currently experiencing the same issue, and it’s not related to removing a member. It’s simply a problem with the Bitwarden extension version 2025.8.1.
Thanks all, can you confirm if temporarily turning off the VPN resolves this issue? The team is working on a fix that will be available for everyone soon!
This defect is not an intentional cutoff due to an outdated server.
With that said, you probably should review the recent reminder about Bitwarden’s support window when it comes to client/server compatibility. If you are not keeping your self-hosted server within a couple versions of current, it can be risky to allow the apps to be on the most recent version.
For those seeing this issue in their self-hosted environment, what version of the app are you using? Not the server version, the version of the client that is showing the “cannot read properties of undefined” error?
From what I can see it definitely impacts 2025.8.x client version. It also seems more issues with Microsoft edge. I was logged in working fine. Logged out and was unable to login on both 2025.8.0 and 2025.8.1 with Microsoft Edge.
Thank you. And is your self-hosted server on the latest self-host release?
We are tracking an issue here that appears to be causing problems for 2025.8.0 clients connecting to older servers. This error is not being exposed correctly in the UI, leading to these “cannot read properties of undefined” messages.
Thanks for confirming that. I would recommend updating to the latest server version to see if this resolves the issue.
And, I’ll point to my post above highlighting the risks of allowing automatic client updates if you are not keeping your server on a recent version.

I am also having this same issue. We are self hosted and on version 2025.3.0 and the browser extension is 2025.8.1. I see updating the server to the latest version is what fixes it but unfortunately the whole server breaks after we update our server. We found the initial breakage was version 2025.5.3. After some testing and troubleshooting we rolled back to the previous version (2025.3.0). We haven’t had time to further troubleshoot the updated server issues so now we are stuck. We are currently running the server on Debian 11 using the approved docker installation guidance. I have not yet contacted support for the upgrade issues as time has not yet allowed.
Running Bitwarden version 2024.1.2
Running extension 2025.8.1 in Brave:
An error has occured. Cannot read properties of undefined (Reading ‘toLowerCase’).
Running extension 2024.4.1 in Firefox, that works.
Because of mentioned error, I upgraded today my self-hosted image (docker) to 2025.2.2.
Logging from Chrome extension 2025.8.1 causes the error.
Logging from Windows app 2025.8.1 causes the error.
Logging from Brave extension 2024.11.2 - no issues.
Same problem here, I have two browsers: Brave ‘v1.81.137’ and Ecosia ‘v139.0.7258.13 (PROD) (64-bit)’ - both running Bitwarden extension v2025.8.1, Ecosia and Brave have this issue but only when logged out fully. If logged in and only entering password, error does not appear.
