Looks good and I think it already is more intuitive than the current release. Thanks for taking on this endeavor. Below are my reactions.
Overall,
Make the overlay window resizable and zoomable (with mouse-wheel) similar to what can be done on the popup. Or at least zoom along with the Web page it overlays.
When I widen the pop-out window, expand all fields to full-width instead of adding blank space on the left and right. This will allow me to see the full contents of type in fields and menus (e.g. the “Folder” menu on Edit item) that otherwise truncate/scroll.
On the “vault” page,
The top and bottom bars could be combined to save space. Instead of:
……
Make it a single bar like this and include “settings” within then account menu.
Similarly, combine the top and bottom bar for “view login” and “edit login”.
Put a twistie next to auto-fill suggestions so that it can easily be collapsed.
Along side these menus:
Add a “saved searches” menu.
Add a “sort by” menu that includes:
Most recently used
Name
Modification Date
On the “generator” page
In the passphrase generator, immediately update when I check the checkbox, instead of making me click refresh. Ditto for number of words, etc.
On the “edit login” page
Add a cancel button next to the save button.
Implement a “markdown” editor for the “notes” field, including the ability to paste pictures, akin to the editor used for this Discourse community.
Allow “password” to become a linked field to another vault entry. This will solve problems with SSO federations that sometimes want just my username and sometimes want my full email (or in Active Directory terms, samAccountName vs UserPrincipalName).
On the current production extension, the popup button only appears on the main vault page:
In the beta extension, it also appears on other pages, such as “edit vault entry” and “new login”. This does not directly prevent data loss, but it does give you the chance to not lose data after you have started typing and realize there is another thing to be copied.
In “view (login) item”, the “notes” section should be larger. - I just created a dummy item and of course in reality not every word has the same amount of characters, but it is inconvient to enlarge the field regularly to see whole notes:
In this example, the “notes” went up to “word31” and this (only “until” word9) is everything I can see without enlarging the field… And maybe even more important: this view doesn’t indicate that there is more text in the notes field. At least, the viewed text should end with three dots or something like that! (PS: Okay, second thought to that: I see now that the scrolling bar indicates that already… but it’s not completely intuitive for me, as you have to check for the scrolling bar intentionally, after looking to the text…)
I just tested it in the Beta and unfortunately, if I (e.g.) create a new login vault item, type in some things, then use the pop-out button… the pop-out window opens with a “fresh view” and all my typings are gone, so it doesn’t prevent data loss… in fact, it may cause now even more data loss by that thought “oh, I can click the pop-out and go on with it”.
Looking a bit further, the popout icon in “new entry” does indeed keep the URL and other things that Bitwarden “predictively” filled in (which is what I checked in my 10-second test), but it does not keep edits I made, such as entering a username. So kinda like raisin bread without the cinnamon. Sure it exists but is just not quite as good.
I am very glad that after many years, the developers finally remembered that they have users.
But what’s the problem? Users have been talking for several years about the need to pin the BitWarden window. A new version is coming out – and I don’t see anything new except border-radius.
Auto-fill for search results does not work as expected.
I just wanted to auto-fill credentials on a site that did not show up under the suggestions. So I did a search for it, scrolled down to the entry, and clicked on it. The entry opens but there is no auto-fill button. So I click “back” but the scroll position is reset to the top. So I have to scroll down again, click on the three dots and select “auto-fill”.
Also the search seems to display all results in alphabetical order and not according to the best match. Even if I type the name exactly as in the vault entry, other entries are displayed first.
One thing that I really like is that now it is possible to clone an organization item into my personal vault.
Two minor things I miss:
When I open the extension, the cursor focus is not in the search field.
I miss the launch website button on the search results
My workflow with many items is the following:
open the extension
type the name of the website I want to go to
click on the launch website button in the search results
and then autofill the login page with the keyboard shortcut
This way, I do not need to save many websites on my browser bookmarks.
With the new design I have to make a couple of clicks more than before.
One more suggestion:
When you open the extension, the autofillable items are at the top of the list, that is, of course, great!
Let me explain myself with an example: I have several google accounts, my main one and some others that I use rarely. My non-main accounts have the autofill match detection on the urls set to never (this way I know that the keyboard shortcut will always autofill the same credentials).
It would be really nice if those non-main accounts appeared just below the normal autofill ones, so that I could select the 3 dots menu and autofill them from there.
I know from interacting with users on this forum (and on Reddit) that many Bitwarden users use the browser extension as a bookmark manager, in a manner similar to what @kpiris has described. For those users, the new design will be very disruptive.
I found this bug logging in with a passkey from a locked vault:
Having the vault locked, I try to login with a passkey.
The extension asks me to unlock the vault.
I enter my pin.
Instead of asking me to choose the passkey, the extension shows me the list of items in my vault (just like when it is opened from scracth).
I have to close this just opened pop-up window.
Now the browser prompts for my security key.
I have to click cancel.
And then, after the error from the webpage, I have to try to authenticate again with the passkey, which this time it will work, because the vault is now unlocked.
This is trivial to reproduce on passkeys.io (or with any website where you have a passkey in bitwarden).
Oh,are you looking for feedback on functional bugs at this time, as well? I assumed that you were just previewing (and seeking feedback on) the UI design or “skin”, and that a lot of under-the-hood work was still a work in progress (hence the beta status and presence of bugs).
Should bug reports on the beta extension be submitted on Github, and/or should we create a separate thread on the Beta Programs forum here to collect bug reports?
