Autofill has stopped working

I have been using BW on my Dell laptop without issue for about 3 months.
Just recently autofill stopped working for all sites. It’s as though my browser no longer recognises that I have BW installed.
My browser is Microsoft Edge with Windows 10, the BW version is 2025.10.2. There is no problem accessing/editing my vault.

@CBK Welcome to the forum!

Could you please specify if all eight or so autofill methods (https://bitwarden.com/help/auto-fill-browser/) don’t work – or if you still see the number of corresponding login items on the BW icon in the toolbar and e.g. can use the “Fill” button?

Maybe you only don’t see the so-called inline autofill menu?

Please describe, what exactly you are experiencing.

I no longer see the BW icon when hovering over any username or passwords fields. I can open my vault and manually copy/paste the details whereas previously the icon always appeared and I could make the relevant selection.

If you go to Settings > Autofill in your browser extension, is the option “Show autofill suggestions on form fields” enabled? If you scroll down to the Additional Options section, is the option “Show context menu options” enabled?

And, for good measure, if you go to Settings > Appearance is the option “Show number of login autofill suggestions on extension icon” enabled?

I don’t see any of the options referred to in either the BW Settings or in Microsoft Edge settings.

To reiterate: This issue has only arisen recently, autofill was operating as expected for several months. No options have been (knowingly) changed.

Really? Please follow the step-by-step instructions below.

:one: Open the Bitwarden browser extension and click the :gear: Settings icon:

:two: Click on Autofill (the second link on the Settings page):

:three: Let me know whether the first checkbox is checked (:check_box_with_check:) or unchecked (:stop_button:):

Please let me know if you still need help finding the rest of the settings that I had mentioned in my previous comment.

I don’t see any of that. BW settings that I can see only allows changes to things like the master password and vault timeout.

I am beginning to suspect that you in fact do not have the Bitwarden browser extension installed…

Please copy and paste the following into the address bar of your Edge browser, and then press Enter:

edge://extensions/?id=jbkfoedolllekgbhcbcoahefnbanhhlh

What do you see? If you do have the Bitwarden browser extension installed, you should see something like the following:

In case you do see the above configuration details page for the installed Bitwarden Password Manager extension, what is the position of the ON/OFF toggle in the upper right corner of the page (marked with an orange circle in the screenshot above)?

This is exactly what I see. The toggle is on. As I’ve said several times it was working correctly for several months.

So, when you go to the BW browser extension “Settings” tab, you don’t see all those options here:

?

In that case, please follow the three steps I had outlined in my comment above, and take screenshots at each step (e.g., by using the keyboard shortcut Alt+PrintScreen). Post any screenshots that look significantly different from those that I had shown (but make sure to redact any personal information visible in the screenshots before posting).

This statement indicates that you are not actually accessing the Bitwarden browser extension, but that you are instead opening the Bitwarden Web Vault (accessed via the website vault.bitwarden.com). The Bitwarden Web Vault is the only place where the master password can be changed.

To access the browser extension, you must click the puzzle piece icon (:puzzle_piece:) to the right of your browser address bar (see orange circle in the screenshot below), and then select “Bitwarden Password Manager”:

P.S. If you click the pushpin icon (:pushpin:) next to “Bitwarden Password Manager” in the Extensions pop-up menu (accessed via :puzzle_piece:), then your browser will get a pinned Bitwarden shield icon (:shield:) next to the address bar, and you will be able to directly access the browser extension by clicking on the shield icon.

This takes me to bitwarden.com and then vault.bitwarden.com after logging in (as per the partial screen shot below). I’ve never seen the “extension” screens as per the screen shots in earlier posts.

@CBK Thanks for the explanation and screenshot. And that is the Bitwarden web vault / web app. It can’t autofill at all in your browsers.

So if autofill worked before for you without the browser extension, this certainly raises more questions than answers. (PS: if you didn’t use the Bitwarden browser extension until now but could autofill in desktop browsers, I would even suspect that in fact you may have used the browsers password manager for autofill until now)

For Bitwarden’s autofill to work in desktop browsers, you need the Bitwarden browser extension in your browser…

  1. Download the extension for your browser: Download the Bitwarden Password Manager App for iPhone, Android, Chrome, Safari, and More | Bitwarden

  2. Set up autofill with the browser extension: https://bitwarden.com/help/auto-fill-browser/

I will take you at your word that this statement is accurate, which means that there is in fact a Bitwarden browser extension installed in your Edge browser.

Now, please follow my prior instructions for how to open the browser extension:

Assuming that you figure out how to open the browser extension by following the above instructions, please go back to my original response and answer the questions that I had posed there:

I’ve been clicking the wrong option and possibly some confusion over terminology. Once into the extension I found the “Make Bitwarden your default password manager” item not checked. Once changed BW autofill resumed correctly.

I had removed all passwords from the browser password manager when I implemented BW so I’m not sure how it has worked until now.

Thanks for your patience.

Very good, that you found the right spot now!

Hm. It may be completely harmless then and that setting may have gotten lost just by a recent browser update, BW extension update or both.
