Just curious which apps and games out there might support such a thing. I have the BitWarden app on my PC, Android phone, and Steam Deck, but find it difficult to sign into things like apps and games on my Meta Quest 2, my Steam Deck while it’s in gaming mode, and my Nintendo Switch on occasion.
Does anybody here know of any games that support such a feature, or potentially an (un)officially curated list of those apps/games made by (the community/)the people who made the apps/games/hardware?
Hey there, where possible, you can often sign in to your console using a QR code, which will allow you to authenticate through your Bitwarden mobile app. For example, you can scan the Nintendo Switch QR code, and use a passkey stored in Bitwarden on your mobile device.
Hey @dwbit, could you please confirm that this is actually possible with a passkey stored in Bitwarden?
I don’t see this “sign in” option in the Help Sites – neither for Android nor for the iOS app (“Sign in using a passkey stored in Bitwarden” sections in the respective tabs).
Both those “tabs” describe only the following for sign in on/via the mobile apps: “To use a passkey stored in Bitwarden, initiate the passkey login on the website. The mobile app will provide an option to login using the passkey stored in your Bitwarden vault” (emphasis my edit). → I understand this as “after I initiated the login procedure, the mobile app will automatically open and provide an option” → but that can only be the case, if it’s happening on the same (mobile) device… or not?
(otherwise, how would the mobile app provide an option to go on with the log in procedure “automatically”, if I let’s say initiated the passkey-login on a smart TV… or is the mobile app already able to receive a command via a bluetooth connection to a smart TV / laptop / desktop / whatever ?!)
Unfortunately, I’m still only on Android 14 (and my device is one of the few, that doesn’t have third-party passkey support yet ), so I can not test it. (and I don’t have an iOS device to test it either)
Is there a function/button to actively initiate a passkey-QR-code-scan in the mobile apps? (If yes, then it’s hidden from me because my device lacks the third-party passkey support?! – And again, that would be missing in the documentation / Help Sites also…)
Yeah, e.g. with the system scanner app of the Android device and device-bound passkeys on the Android device, this is definitely possible – but with passkeys that are stored in the Bitwarden vault??
Just by reading the descriptions, it seems that there exist some third-party services (e.g., Nintendo) that will use a QR code to open a web-based login page on the device that scans the QR code (which would all be possible with no involvement from Bitwarden). At that point, you would be able to use a Bitwarden browser extension or mobile app to authenticate in the login webpage, as usual (with or without passkeys). Upon successful login, the third-party service would communicate with the original device (where the QR code originated) to confirm that authentication was successful — again, with no involvement from Bitwarden.
I’m not 100% sure, but I think that the feature requestmay extend to use-cases in which the third-party service is not able to complete the authentication using a method like the scheme described above.
