Allow us to use Chrome's built in address and card autofill if we want and stop force disabling it

I came from Lastpass a year ago. I used LP for password management, but kept Chrome’s built in address and card autofill because it always worked properly and the LP Chrome extension didn’t care.

Went to do the same with Bitwarden, but couldn’t. Contacted BW support, was told to make a bug report. Made a Github bug report ( BUG: Bitwarden still force disabling Chrome's address and card autofill "Bitwarden Password Manager is controlling this setting" · Issue #12435 · bitwarden/clients · GitHub ), and the person replied saying “Your issue appears to be describing the intended behavior of the software.” closing it and ignoring all subsequent replies.

Tried dealing with BW’s address and card autofill, but it’s basically worthless. As I said in a long reddit post 5 months ago (thread): ”Even though I have it set to show cards, it never does. I’m always having to right click and go through the menus. Even when I do, the accuracy rate for fields is terrible, maybe 25-50% of the stuff is in the proper fields. It’s not even worth it.”

So it should be allowed that we have the option to use/enable Chrome’s built in address/card autofills if we want to, until such a time BW is able to figure out theirs.

Welcome to the forum!

It should be possible, but if the options to enable payment/address autofill in Chrome are unavailable, then read on.

The setting “Make Bitwarden your default password manager” can be disabled in the Bitwarden browser extension (under Settings > Autofill), but some users have found that disabling this option does not always release Bitwarden’s hold on the browser’s autofill settings. A more definitive solution is to uninstall the Bitwarden browser extension, and then configure the browser settings:

  • Go to chrome://password-manager/settings, and ensure that everything is disabled there. For improved security, delete any passwords that may still be stored in your Chrome browser, by clicking the Delete data button.
  • Go to chrome://settings/payments in your Chrome browser, and make sure that “Save and fill payment methods” has been enabled.
  • Go to chrome://settings/addresses and ensure that this is all enabled.

After you have done this, reinstall the Bitwarden browser extension, and then make sure to always click Ignore instead of Make default if you see any prompt that asks “Make Bitwarden your default password manager?” (e.g., when you make adjustments to your autofill settings).

Hey there, Android/Chrome recently implemented a change which forces users to choose one service or another rather than being able to use both. The team recently implemented cc autofill, so please let us know when and where you are experiencing issues so they can look into it. Work on identities is next.

Is this also applicable to Chrome on other operating systems (Windows, macOS, etc.), or does it only affect Android devices?

Thanks for flagging @grb, I see this is for the extension rather than Android, although worth noting that for me, a fresh install of Bitwarden extension for Chrome or Brave on mac does not disable Chrome automatically, unless you toggle it in the settings menu (it is off by default), and it can be toggled off/off at any time.

@GodzFire can you confirm which Bitwarden browser extension version you are using?

Which of the following settings do you have enabled?

There is also a pop-up that appears frequently (but not always logically) when one makes changes to the inline autofill menu options:

It is easy to inadvertently click Continue without reading the prompt, thereby disabling Chrome.

@GodzFire if you have a recording showing that you’re unable to disable the toggle through the Bitwarden browser extension and/or through the Chrome/Brave autofill settings, that would be helpful for the team to review.

The issue (which has existed since 2024) is that the option “Make Bitwarden your default password manager” can be unchecked, but that unchecking this option does not actually release Bitwarden’s control over the browser’s native autofill settings (hence, the recommended work-around to uninstall and reinstall the Bitwarden browser extension after unchecking “Make Bitwarden your default password manager”).

Here it is in an Edge browser on Windows:

Hey @grb, on my end, using Chrome/Brave on mac, I can still go into the Chrome/Brave password manager settings, disable Bitwarden and then re-enable native Chrome/Brave autofill, if that isn’t the case for @GodzFire, we can definitely look into it, we just need a little more information.

See my edit above. There is definitely an issue for Chromium browsers on Windows. Perhaps something else is going in for @GodzFire in macOS (but it would still be worth their while to attempt the proposed work-around).

Ah, understood, I was going by the bug report, which was for macOS and I was not able to reproduce on my end with latest version of Bitwarden and Chromium browser.

I’ll check in with the team on the Windows side.

Thanks. If I had to guess, it might have something to do with the fact the permission “Change your privacy-related settings” remains enabled for the extension even after “Make Bitwarden your default password manager” has been unchecked.

@GodzFire What operating system (e.g., macOS, Windows, etc.) are you using?

And did you ever try the solution I offered for you in my first response:

I was testing/writing up a response based on my findings. I uninstalled the addon and reinstalled it, and only have the first ‘Show autofill suggestions on form fields’ this time. So far, it seems to be allowing it this time around and tests on Test Autofill are working properly.

I can tell you a year ago that wasn’t the case when I made that Github bug report, I spent a day trying to solve it and being in IT I went through the ringer trying to test and troubleshoot it. So something must have changed since then.

I will continue testing the next few days.

It should continue working unless you get a “Make Bitwarden your default password manager” pop-up prompt and click Continue, or you deliberately enable the “Make Bitwarden your default password manager” option under Settings > Autofill.

I will close this thread (with a 7-day delay, so you can make a follow-up comment if your testing in the days ahead turn up a problem). If you encounter any issues after this thread has closed, please start a new thread in the Ask the Community section of the forum.
