I switched from KeePassXC recently and there are a few features I’d like to see in Bitwarden. KeePassXC allows some settings to be set at the folder(called group in Keepass) level. Each item or group can be set to override or inherit the setting from the group above it.
Some of the setting I’d like to see inherited exist in KeePass and don’t currently exist in Bitwarden, but have been suggested in other feature requests. At least one of those feature requests mentions folder inheritance, but I’m making a separate feature request for folder-wide settings because those other feature requests could be implemented without inheriting their settings from folders or tags.
The settings inherited from folders or tags could include:
- Exclude from searches
- Exclude from all-items view
- Exclude from reports
- Exclude from browser auto-fill
- Exclude from auto-type
- Setting auto-type patterns
- Setting matching rules
- Setting default icons
Some use cases:
- Setting all exclude option for a folder or tag would make it into an archive, fulfilling this feature request
- Some users have accounts that they don’t believe require strong passwords or want excluded from password strength reports(here, and here). Those feature requests mentioned software license keys and account on systems that should not be accessible from the internet as examples. License keys or local accounts could both be grouped into a folder or tag to have the same exclusion settings applied to them. The request to exclude passwords from weak password warnings might be controversial, but even it it’s a bad idea for any active accounts it would still be useful for the archived accounts use case mentioned above.
- Some accounts are used only in special situations or only very occasionally, and I don’t want them regularly appearing as browser auto-fill options or in searches. Beyond being a nuisance, I might actively not want them to appear if I want to be sure that I don’t confuse them with a normal account. i have some items like this and I saw another user with the same issue here, although they propose a different solution.
Here are the settings screen shots from KeePassXC:
Adding this feature would complicate this feature request to allow items in multiple folders(also requested again here) as items might only inherit settings from one folder. The goal of the multi-folder request is pretty much the same as tags. Some of the users on the tag feature request thread expressed a strong preference for tags over folders and requested something like gmails tag system to replace folders entirely. It might be more difficult to do something like this with tags instead of folders, but if tag based settings could work, I might prefer it over folders. Maybe, if tags could be nested, there could be a special hierarchy of settings tags, with only one settings tag allowed per item, so they never conflict.
