Add essential keyboard shortcuts & navigation

As a user of Bitwarden, I want to be able to quickly and easily access my credential information to enable to me to make best use of the solution.

Currently when using the Bitwarden application, it requires a lot of mouse movement which hinders the adoption of the Bitwarden application. My current workflow with KeePassXC makes strong use of their defined shortcuts to do the following:

  • Copy Username
  • Copy Password
  • Copy URL
  • Copy TOTP

Developing this feature will make it possible for me to adopt Bitwarden. This also impacts those who rely solely upon the keyboard such as those who use accessibility tools that effectively cannot use the mouse as a viable option.

  • Limited to the above 4 actions (copy data from the vault to the clipboard via keyboard shortcuts)
  • Shortcuts are not user-defined (statically defined only)

This is similar to issue #76 however it is scoped significantly smaller and that issue did not include in the description shortcuts for accessing data, mostly navigation instead.

Essential! I’m loving Bitwarden, but we need keyboard shortcuts before this can become my tool of choice. <3

Here are some examples that are quite common for actions besides copying credentials:

  • Cmd + Backspace = Delete current entry
  • Cmd + E = Edit current entry
  • Cmd + S = Save current entry (in edit screen)

Any update on this? It’s been almost a year since this discussion was created, and it’s still not possible to use the Bitwaren desktop app with a keyboard, nor the browser extension. This isn’t just accessibility, this is basic functionality. It should be possible to navigate, copy and edit information using the keyboard.

I would love a keyboard shortcut to switch to “Favourites”!

I’m a new Bitwarden user. Like the entry level paid package. Only thing that is very disappointing is the lack of these basic keyboard shortcuts on the MacOS app as well as TouchID.

Hope we don’t have to wait another year for these features which many of the other password vaults have.

Hey folks - we actually do have these on the roadmap. I don’t have an ETA but I can tell you that shortcuts, cycling through logins and biometrics are very high on the TODO list.

When it comes to shortcuts what I’m missing the most is to have a quick auto-fill the last used account when I have the auto-lock feature turned on.

Now, I know that you can usually use the Ctrl + Shift + L combination to do this. But when Bitwarden is locked, it doesn’t do anything.

I think it would be nice if in this case the extension would open, ask for the pin, and when that’s filled, the inputs would fill out too, and the extension would close itself.

Right now this requires too many steps, especially if someone doesn’t really want to use their mouse all the time.

Version 1.17.0 has been published and there is now a keyboard shortcut for:
copying the username: CMD+U
copying the password: CMD+P

I’m not someone in favour plugins in browsers that access password vaults, so for me this is a great improvement.

Only missing bit for me is Touch ID support.

I agree! I just noticed this release and the addition of those features this morning and thanks to all that helped provide this!!

Definitely a great plus to the app.

I have a reverse key command issue. I need to disable one. When I use command-shift-G in Adobe InDesign CS (Mac), a command I use all the time, I am taken to the Bitwarden App with an open dialogue box asking if I want to regenerate the password for the open record. This is very frustrating.

I may post this again as a separate item.

copying the username: CMD+U
copying the password: CMD+P

Thanks for that, but it is not convenitent. I have to release my mouse for these shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are essential for me! I’m actually seriously considering to move away from Bitwarden, since I can’t get any shortcuts :frowning: I hoped development was faster here…

My needs are simple

  • Fill in: Ctrl-Shift-L (existing)
  • Generate new password: Ctrl-Shift-??? (The right-click-menu doesn’t even offer this - here it’s only possible to paste an already copied password… It doesn’t make sense??)

These operations are used several times a day, while all the rest is only occasionally, and for that I can use a mouse.

I don’t understand why you would map “Cmd + Shift + L” which is used by Safari for showing and hiding the sidebar. And I know "Cmd + " is also an option, but only for people with a certain keyboard or locale. JUST LET US PICK OUT OWN KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS.

1password f.e. uses Cmd+#
It’s a very quick and handy shortcut. I’d like to use it with Bitwarden.

a keyboard shortcut to copy the current TOTP would be absolutely fantastic, since my work doesn’t use a password, just username and TOTP.

I did not read all the comments in detail but did not find that request (I’m using the Chrome extension):
I have many sites where the autofill doesn’t work at all. Most of them are in my company’s internal network, so I’m not able to share them for investigation. For those sites I always have to type in the username and then open the extension, click the “copy password” icon and paste it.

To make life easier I would love a shortcut to just copy the password of the current site to the clipboard. I usually know the username by heart and can just type it, but another shortcut for that would also be nice.

Even better would be a shortcut to directly paste the usaername/password in the current input field, if that’s possible. So, I don’t need to hit Crtl+Y and also the password is not need in the clipboard at all.

Not sure if this helps, but I also have some sites where the default autofill does not work, sometimes it’s because the site code itself blocks the autofill, but most commonly it’s because the site code does not use standard username/password input names/ids, so what I do is inspect the code to check the login form input names/ids for username and password and add those customer fields to my Bitwarden login items accordingly. I also use this for those annoying “remember me next time” checkboxes. This workaround does not work 100% of the times, though, because sometimes it appears to be blocked by the site or the custom fields simply do not work for some reason. Cheers!

Adding a shortcut to edit in the extension and the app would speed things up considerably

How there still isn’t a keyboard shortcut to Edit (CMD+E) / Save (CMD+S) / navigate the general password generation UI bewilders me. Please update this! There isn’t even a way to delete a password entry without having to click the damn button on the bottom right!

??selecting multiple passwords at a time / deleting multiple entries? Would be great…
