Asking why the App for TOTP is not shown in the web view of BitWarden Family.
I don’t understand why most TOTP are only made for SmartPhones.
can the TOTP app be installed on multiple phones, and those 2 or 3 phones all have access to the same TOTP codes? Use case is 1 or 2 family members (parents) controlling the TOTP codes, so when younger family members try to login to website or app, they must contact parents to get the TOTP code. But if the parent with access to the TOTP app is not available at that moment, can the other parent use the TOTP app on their phone and get the same TOTP code? Or is each app only able to generate a TOTP code for a user login, and they can’t be shared by other apps?
I can’t remember when i installed the Authenticator app on android smartphone, but it is linked to a bitwarden user account using a specific email address. if the other parent uses a difff email address, and they install the authenticator app, do they get the same codes because they are in the same family plan?
Because it only exists as an authenticator app, usable either on Android or iOS.
In theory, yes, but you have to understand the following: the BW authenticator app – when in “syncing” mode – only syncs with the also installed BW password manager app (on the same device), and only with the BW account that is used there and that enabled the sync in the password manager app.
Well, I just tested this. When you set up an “organization” (free or family) you could include the TOTP codes (seeds) in login items you share via a collection. In my short test, I saw that “TOTP code” also in the “synced” authenticator app.
If that would be too much work, then you still could add the TOTP codes in question to both parent’s accounts which then would also get synced to the authenticator app (if and when set up).
With Bitwarden Family ($40/r) or Bitwarden Premium ($10/yr), TOTP is inbuilt into the Password Manager itself and works in the Web-vault, the Extension and the Desktop. There is no need to use the separate authenticator app unless you have a personal preference for doing so.
There are solutions like ente Auth which are able to sync between your smartphone, a desktop app, and a web view.
It is much more easy than that: Each user can have their own storage of TOTP codes. If you need to share a code permanently, just copy the secret on the other user’s device. Ente also allows for sharing pre-computed tokens for a short amount of time.
@user147 Welcome to the forum! I moved your post into the forum section dedicated to Bitwarden’s stand-alone Authenticator app, since your question seems to be focused on that app.
oh jeez lou ease. in the android app, TOTP is a top menu item. in the web-vault TOTP is not a main menu item. I needed to go into the vault, then into the login item (ie amazune), then I could see the TOTP counting down. thanks for the tip.
