Where is the vault kept for the Chromium-based Edge on Windows?

I have installed Bitwarden into the “new” Chromium-based Edge browser on Windows 10. It works well. I wanted to understand where on my PC Bitwarden stores its local copy of the vault.

I found the article https://bitwarden.com/help/article/where-is-data-stored-computer/ which says that the location for “Edge” (it admits only one) is %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\Extensions\Storage . This location exists on my computer but is empty. My suspicion is that this is for the old, default Edge, not the new one.

I wrote Support asking for help - the response I got was to direct me to the article I had said I had read and gave me the same incorrect location I had already said was empty.

So… where is the local vault kept for the Chromium-based Edge? Thanks.

Could check on: …\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Extensions\jbkfoedolllekgbhcbcoahefnbanhhlh ?

I only have 1 Windows computer to corroborate this ID name “jbkfoedolllekgbhcbcoahefnbanhhlh” so you should look up for it here:

Got the same result on a VM on another computer, at least for these version the ID name seems to be that one

Thanks - I had found that folder earlier, but it doesn’t contain the vault. It’s just CSS, HTML, JSON and image files.

Can anyone identify the name of the file containing the vault? I could then search my system for it.

I had a further exchange with BW support, and am as confused as ever. I can “lock” my browser BW session and I have it set to lock after four hours. I can unlock by just entering my password, which is different from a full login that also wants my 2FA. This status survives a reboot, telling me that there must be a local copy of the vault somewhere…

I followed the path in the article linked, %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\Extensions\Storage, and found a single folder with what looked to be a random generated name. Inside is a DAT file of 18.6MB in size. I assume this is the file you are looking for.

Which version of Edge do you have? My guess that it is the older, non-Chromium-based version. Help > About should tell you. I have version 83.

That file you found would likely be the vault. I just can’t find it on my PC and support has been singularly obtuse in understanding what I am asking for - each reply is to a question I didn’t ask! On my Windows 10 PC, the Extensions folder is empty - there is no Storage subfolder. Does the DAT file have a reasonable name? If so, what is it?

I am using the new Chromium based Edge

The file name also appears to be a random string.

By any chance were you using Bitwarden with the older Edge?

No, I only started using Bitwarden after the Chromium Edge was released.

I think I found it. C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Extension State

There I have a file called 00322.log that appears to be the vault. It seems similar to the file in the documented Chrome folder. I had done an experiment to see if I uninstalled the Windows Store extension for Edge and installed the one from the Chrome store, if it would put the vault in the documented Chrome location. Nope.
