I’ve been trying to use Bitwarden on a new browser (Edge) on my work computer. When I get to the part where I’m supposed to get an email with a verification code, the email shows up, but long after the verification window has timed out. Yesterday the verification emails (two of them from two login attempts) arrived hours(!) later.
This morning I’m trying again. One login attempt the email arrived a few minutes too late. I tried again and am still waiting for the verification code email to arrive. It’s been 40 minutes and still no email. When I checked the verification window 7 minutes after my login attempt, it had timed out.
My email provider is Xfinity (Comcast) and my client is Outlook. However, I’ve also been checking my Xfinity webmail to make sure it isn’t Outlook causing the problem. The emails, when they finally arrive, come to my regular inbox, not the junk folder.
Of course I went to the Bitwarden support community, but in order to post, I need to establish a separate community account for that. You guessed it; to establish the new community account, they will send an email for verification! After about 20 minutes, still no email for that either.
I would suggest that you enable two-step login for your Bitwarden account, and then you don’t have to worry about the verification emails (you could even disable them after 2FA is set up). Use a TOTP authenticator or a passkey as your second factor, so you won’t have the same problem with email 2FA.
You would have set up email 2FA in the web vault - whereas the new device verification “happens automatically” if you didn’t set up any 2FA for your Bitwarden account.
If you are talking about email 2FA, then I would suggest trying it with a different email address. Up until now, I never saw a delay in Bitwarden’s emails - and I just tried it three times in a row with email 2FA, all three emails arrived almost instantly… if you have the same thing happen with another email (from a different provider!) then I’m not sure what it could be then…
If you are talking about emails stemming from the new device verification, then you would have to change your Bitwarden email address, which is a bit more sensitive. Before you would even try that, please make an export of your Bitwarden vault, in case something would go wrong.
PS: You can distinguish the new device verification and email-2FA also when you login:
