I just wonder what is the meaning to use Bitwarden CLI and creating there an attachment for an already existing item ? All those items are already in the vault in any way . You have a file name ,somewhere ,then one has that item ID and the paths and all that - now that file is successfully uploaded to the Vault .But for what use .?Maybe it is helpful when one is doing some editing work in the vault ?
The use-case for the bw create attachment CLI command is no different from the use-case for uploading file attachments using the web app, browser extension, mobile app, or desktop app.
File attachments are used to securely store any type of file, including images, PDF files, and even plain text files that contain more than 7500 characters (the limit for how much text can be entered into the Notes field of a vault item.
Yes this was my thought too ,say I have a Tax refund document for 8000 € ,sure I do not want that this document is sitting in Finder so that everybody can see it and starts asking for a loan ? Haha … I can upload any small important ,but wery important document and then delete that original which is left on the computer. Then when I need it I can just download it . But I do not clearly understand why some choose the CLI and others the Desktop or Webb app ? Probably the CLI is much faster.?
Creating attachments in the CLI is quite easy ,but to create new items is somewhat more difficult ,because of those templates and that jq encoding - I looked at that before - but not succeed at all. I will see how it fares later when I have some time .
If I had to guess, I would say that 99% of Bitwarden users use the mobile app, desktop app, web app, and/or browser extension to access their vault (e.g., to view, edit, add, or delete information) — not the CLI.
The CLI is mainly used for purposes of automation, because is is possible to write scripts that call the CLI functions. A few examples can be seen in the threads listed here:
This was the best explanation . Then it is clear that I may used the CLI because of some curiosity only . I think as a lone business man I am in no need of it after all. One cannot be an excellent business man and also a top CLI expert . But it was a good study ,in the process I learned other concepts about the terminal which I have a great use of .So it was not a vested time after all. Thanks grb.
