Updated: BW Android not autofilling on multiple websites using Brave

So I noticed this today. Logging into xfinity’s app (which is really just a custom browser app), BW won’t offer to autofill. I do have BW configured to use inline autofill and draw-over is enabled.

I have battery optimization off for the BW app. It does work fine on some other websites and generally always works for non-browser logins.

I of course have BW set as my preferred autofill on the phone, and I do not have any stored passwords in the browser itself.

Using Brave 1.69.160, and the phone is GrapheneOS 2024090400 on a Pixel 7a.

Update, thought this was solved but it’s not. Observing very inconsistent behavior. Mostly, I get the little popup “Autofill with Bitwarden”, press it, and the BW app launches and takes me to the correct vault entry. I select it, but this is where things go haywire. On some websites, the UN and PW get autofilled, but on (many) others they don’t.

Also, on the websites where they don’t get filled in, paste doesn’t work. Like if I copy the PW, switch to the browser, then long-press on the PW field, “Paste” never pops up.

I have (I think) tried every combination of autofill settings within the BW Android app, to no avail.

What changed recently?

Honestly, I have no experience with GrapheneOS.

What version of the mobile app do you use?
Did you already switch to the Beta?

Version: 2024.7.1 (11086)

That is the “old” non-native mobile app. I think this update was end of July if I remember correctly. - So, if you noticed the problems around 5-6 days ago the first time, it is likely that it is not the mobile app who is the culprit, I would think.

Maybe the last Brave or GrapheneOS updates brought some changes / incompatibilities ?

On the other hand - if you are feeling adventurous - maybe try the new beta version of the Android app. In the best scenario, your current problem get’s better, and you can relish the new beta-hiccups.

Well, I disabled Accessibility services on the phone. Now, on Brave I get no prompt to autofill whatsoever. I never had to have Accessibility turned on before (and I know this, because the phone OS nags me periodically to make sure I really need it on, and it never did this in the past).

Well, if you turn the accessibility services on - does it work then?

If I reenable Accessibility, it reverts to this behavior:

I get the little popup “Autofill with Bitwarden”, press it, and the BW app launches and takes me to the correct vault entry.

Update: I tried a few websites on my Windows 10 PC, using Brave. They aren’t autofilling either. For example, on two different often-used sites (where autofill has been completely reliable in the past), the browser extension identifies the vault item correctly (meaning, it shows up in the extension window) but there is no counter on the extension icon (i.e. 1, 2, etc. matching the # of possible URL matches). Also, on both sites I tested, when I select the vault item, I get a message like “Unable to fill the selected item on this webpage. Copy and paste the information instead”.

So it is starting to appear that this is a Brave issue not a Bitwarden issue.

Could be. But if we are talking about Win 10, Brave and the browser extension now: update Brave to the latest version 1.69.168 (though Brave usually auto-updates very reliably) and the Bitwarden Browser extension to 2024.9.0. See if that makes a change on your PC.

That did (updates on the Windows PC). Working ok there now. Thanks for the tip!

I just checked the Play Store, there’s no update available for the Brave browser or Bitwarden app, for Android meaning I think I’m on the latest version. Maybe there’s a known issue with this, and the Brave folks are pushing it out to the different platforms? Brave for Ubuntu received an update this morning so it and Windows have both been updated.

So for now, I’m still unable to use autofill (and usually copy & paste, as well) in Brave. It does work (with Accessibility services turned off) in Vanadium. On Vanadium I get the small, one-line popup above the top of the keyboard that I can select to autofill from my BW vault.

On Brave, there are no Bitwarden popups of any sort to offer to fill the fields. It’s as if Bitwarden isn’t installed.

Finally found a solution.

In Brave, enter this:
brave://flags #enable-autofill-virtual-view-structure → enable without compatibility check.

Then restart the browser, select Autofill from the Settings menu, and make sure it is set to Other Providers, then restart the browser again.
