Update failed to uninstall old application files. Please try running the installer again

I received a notification to update the application on my Windows laptop this morning and eventually received this notice. If I try to start the application, I get the update notification and it fails again. I can’t run the application on my laptop. Thanks in advance for any help.

Try:

  1. Uninstalling
  2. Download the installer
  3. Reinstall and log in

Hello, and thanks for the quick reply. I just rebooted the laptop, got the message again, and the application installed without issue.

This keeps happening to me. Last update it happened, so I went and downloaded the installer and reinstalled it. Fine until the next update. Today’s update, I once again got “Failed to uninstall old application files. Please try running the installer again”

Update: Just downloaded the installer again. Failed installing, said unable to close Bitwarden’, then gave this same error “Failed to uninstall old application files”. I had to end the Bitwarden process in Task Manager before it would install.

It happened to me again as well, so I guess the problem is not really “solved”. My workaround is to reboot, then on reboot, wait until the notification to update appear and allow the update. It seems to me like the update process gets confused if you open a browser with the extension installed before you receive and respond to the notification.

What I’ve noticed is that if the system raises a UAC asking if you want to let the installer make changes to the system, after you accept the failure occurs unless you delete the task in the Task Manager, but if the system does not raise a UAC (my laptop does not, for example), the installation completes without incident. Maybe there is a sequencing issue with closing the running Bitwarden instance when a UAC is presented that does not occur when a UAC is unneeded.

I too have noticed that. I attribute the UAC prompt to the fact that I previously installed “for all users”.
